Could Roosevelt Island Vacant Indoor Pool At Island House Become Gorgeous NYC East River Waterfront Restaurant? Space Is On Market Now With Huge Sign On Windows

Here's a Roosevelt Island dream. A beautiful waterfront restaurant on the Roosevelt Island waterfront promenade with spectacular views of the NYC skyline, East River and Queensboro Bridge.

It might happen if the right Restauranteur can be found for the long empty Island House indoor pool which has just gone on the leasing market

with the Eastern Consolidated real estate brokerage company.

The space is approximately 25,000 sq ft with high ceilings and huge windows facing the East River.

View Inside Island House Pool Space Taken From Outside Yesterday

Other potential uses include offices, gym, art galleries among others but I'm hoping for a restaurant.

But, at least one person does not like the huge billboard window signage.
I think the space has been empty for at least 20 years.

Any experienced restaurant owners out there?

Oh What A Beautiful Morning At The Roosevelt Island East River Pier Today

The Roosevelt Island Twitterverse reports:

It's not summer yet, but what a beautiful morning to spend on Roosevelt Island today.

Some lucky folks enjoyed, a little breakfast, cup of coffee, working on their computer

or just enjoying the incredible NYC waterfront views at the outdoor tables and chairs

on the Roosevelt Island East River Pier.

As reported last week, the outdoor tables and chairs were brought back to the Pier by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) and according to RIOC President Susan Rosenthal:
We’ve got more---assuming they are in demand, we’ll increase the #.....bottom line: we’re here to serve!
Use the Pier and Enjoy!!!!

UPDATE 2:15 PM - A former resident returned to Roosevelt Island today with her friend from Queens and enjoyed a Sushi lunch at the Pier

brought with them from a restaurant in Forest Hills.

Outdoor Tables And Chairs Return To Roosevelt Island West Promenade Pier Today - Will Food Trucks Follow?

The outdoor tables and chairs are back today at the Roosevelt Island West Promenade Pier.

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) will put the tables and chairs out on Friday morning and keep them there through Monday Morning. RIOC hopes to attract food trucks to serve the area.

You can also bring your own food and drink, buy some at local restaurants or just sit there and enjoy the beautiful East River views.

Hopefully, RIOC will also bring in umbrellas for shade from the sun. It can get very hot out there.

Good News, No Eleanor's Pier But RIOC Seeking Food Trucks For Roosevelt Island East River Waterfront Pier This Summer

Reported previously that Hudson Related declined to bring Eleanor's Pier back this summer to the Roosevelt Island East River waterfront pier.

However, some good news about the Pier was discussed during the March 9 Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Operations Advisory Committee meeting (full audio web cast).

In response to RIOC Board Director Margie Smith's question about use of the Pier during the upcoming summer, RIOC Chief Financial Officer Frances Walton reported that RIOC is seeking to bring food trucks

2012 Outdoor Restaurant At Pier And Main Street Food Trucks

to serve East River Waterfront Pier with the tables and chairs placed there last summer.

Here's the discussion.

Hope RIOC is successful in attracting the food trucks. The Pier is a great place to relax during the summer with a bite to eat and cool drink.

The weekend is about to start and there is no better place to be than at Eleanor's Pier

There are food vendors at Eleanor's Pier. You can enjoy some Beef/Chicken Shish Kebab

Fantastic News - Roosevelt Island's Eleanor's Pier On East River Waterfront Now Open - Wonderful Public Space To Eat, Relax And Enjoy One Of The Best New York City Views

Roosevelt Island's Eleanor's Pier on the East River waterfront opened today in what the Concession Operator, Southtown Developer and Main Street Master Leaseholder Hudson Related, describes as a "soft opening" for this weekend and a full opening with vendors next weekend.

Right now, there are tables, chairs and umbrellas available at Eleanor's Pier. You can bring food purchased from local retailers or bring your own, sit by the river and enjoy one of the best views in NYC. I was there earlier this afternoon and saw people with pizza from Nonno's Focacceria and others who brought their own lunch.

This is GREAT!!!!!!

A wonderful public space open to everybody. One of the best things to happen for Roosevelt Island in a long time.

I am looking forward to seeing what vendors will be brought in. I am hoping for the General Tso's Chicken Po Boy vendor please.

Eleanor's Pier will be open Friday's Saturday's and Sunday's thru September 21.

Roosevelt Island East River West Pier Outdoor Seating Food Concession Coming This Summer From Hudson Related - Intent Is To Create A Public Plaza

What's going on at the Roosevelt Island East River West Pier Waterfront Food Concession?

Yesterday RIOC employees were putting up Roosevelt Island West Pier banner signage on the railings.

Reported last April 7:
After completing the renovation of the West/Subway Pier, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) today put out some outdoor tables  and chairs for staging purposes on the Pier today.

We're not quite ready for sitting down with a bite to eat at the Pier, but soon it will be ready.

During April 7 meeting of RIOC Operations Committee meeting (full audio web cast of meeting), RIOC President Charlene Indelicato reported that the Riverwalk Bar & Grill owners, who operated Pier NYC at the Subway/West Pier during summer of 2012, declined to operate the venue this summer. (The Pier was closed during 2013 due to damage from Hurricane Sandy).

Instead of Pier NYC, Ms Indelicato said that RIOC intends to bring in Food Trucks to operate in the area this summer...
The answer is that RIOC will not be bringing Food Trucks to the Pier but recently awarded  operations of the Waterfront Pier Concession for this summer to Hudson Related, developers of Southtown Riverwalk buildings and the Main Street Master Retail Leaseholder.

Hudson Related is currently working on their plans for vendors and programming at the West Pier. I asked Hudson Related's David Kramer:
... are you considering the pier to be a "private" space for the food concession like it was for the Pier NYC or will it continue to be a "public" space that can be used by all whether or not they purchase food.

What type of vendors are you looking at for the space?
adding that my preference would be:
... public space for eating similar to Fowler Square in Fort Greene and the Archway under Manhattan Bridge in Dumbo. Also the outdoor seating area at LIC Flea. (Sent you picture before).

The NYC DOT has other examples of public spaces with eating options that are good examples....
Mr. Kramer replied:
... Hudson Related's intent is to treat the area as a public plaza....
As RIOC was hanging the Roosevelt Island West Pier banner yesterday, two men were a couple of feet away fishing.

Perhaps they are interested in being the fresh seafood vendors for the Roosevelt Island

West Pier when it opens this summer?

Report From RIOC President Charlene Indelicato - Roosevelt Island 2014 Outdoor Summer Movies, Waterfront Pier Concessions, Bike NY Kickoff Party, Lighthouse Park Repairs, New Parking Meters, Sportspark Heating, Roosevelt Island Day & More

Image Of 2012 Roosevelt Island Southpoint Park Movie Showing of Captain America By Irina Hage

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President Charlene Indelicato sends the following report to the community.
Outdoor activities and events on Roosevelt Island have begun in earnest, and the dates for many new and well-loved Roosevelt Island events have been set. You can read more below about the fantastic calendar of events planned for this summer. Free community celebrations aren’t the only thing planned for the season, however. Construction projects, including repairs to the Lighthouse Park footbridges and the installation of new parking meters, are in the works along with plans to bring concessions to the newly refurbished West Pier.

Upcoming Events

This weekend, the Motorgate Gallery will be holding an opening for its new exhibit at the Motorgate Garage Atrium (628 Main Street) on Saturday, April 26 at 12 p.m. We invite you to join us in a celebration of the beautiful artwork that was painted at the 2013 Fall for Arts Festival, and to view the murals now on display at the Gallery. The opening is sponsored by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation and curated by the Roosevelt Island Visual Art Association.

Bike New York Event

Mark your calendars – the Bike New York Spring Kickoff Party will take place on Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Capobianco basketball court on Roosevelt Island. This family-friendly community event will celebrate bike month and the start of the bicycling season on Roosevelt Island. Activities will include a Learn to Ride Kids class, pop-up bike shop, bicycle raffle, face painting, bike decorating, a ride around the island and more. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact  cgoodspeed@bikenewyork.org.

Summer Events

Roosevelt Island Day 2014 will take place on Saturday, June 21. Every year, this event is a celebration of the vibrant community on Roosevelt Island and serves as a day to come together and beautify our neighborhood. Come out and take part in the morning cleanup, then join in the free celebration at Good Shepherd Plaza for carnival rides, games, food and more. This event is sponsored by Urban American and Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation in partnership with the Roosevelt Island Youth Program.

Summer Movie Series

RIOC’s annual Outdoor Summer Movie Series will begin on Saturday, June 28 with a screening of Disney’s hit animated film Frozen. This year’s theme is “Heroes,” focusing on characters who overcome impossible odds. The planned screening schedule is as follows:

Saturday, June 28: Frozen
Friday, July 11: Thor: The Dark World
Saturday, July 12: The Avengers
Saturday, July 26: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Saturday, August 9: The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug
Saturday, August 23: Goldfinger

West Pier Invitation Proposal

RIOC has issued an invitation requesting innovative proposals to provide food vending options at the newly restored West Pier. The Pier, with its wonderful view of the Manhattan skyline, is an ideal location to have a meal and relax on the waterfront. Excellent visibility from the Tram and location near the subway also make this an appealing site for prospective merchants. Interested vendors are encouraged to go online at  rioc.ny.gov/proposal.htm  and look over the Proposal Invitation. For more information, please contact Donna Masly by email only at Donna.Masly@rioc.ny.gov.

Construction Update

On Monday, April 21, work began on a project to improve and repair the Manhattan and Roosevelt Island Tram Stations and platforms. Construction is scheduled to last 120 calendar days. In the event that work causes a disruption to Tram service, RIOC will issue an advisory to notify the public in advance. We thank you for your patience during this necessary work.

Work is progressing on the Good Shepherd Community Center’s entryways and narthex. Restoration of the ceiling and interior doors has been completed, and workers are moving forward with the cleaning of the entryway’s brickwork and limestone. This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of May.

Sportspark Heating

Sportspark’s temporary heating system has been successfully installed and is ready to be activated when the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation closes the Steam Plant down. While the Plant is still in operation, it is more fiscally responsible for Sportspark to continue to use steam. However, the switchover to the temporary system can be made with very little notice and will not require a shutdown of the facility. Responses to the Request for Proposals for the design of Sportspark’s permanent heating system were received on April 17. After the bids for this project are evaluated and the contractor is selected, work on the design will begin.

Reminder: Red Bus Fare Elimination

The deadline for fare change card refunds is approaching quickly. As a reminder, the regular Red Bus fare of $0.25 was eliminated at the beginning of this month. A refund for any unused balance on your fare change card can be obtained at the RIOC Bus Garage (680 Main St.) until this Wednesday, April 30, 2014. For more information, contact us at (212) 832-4540 or email information@rioc.ny.gov.

Outdoor Eating Returning To Roosevelt Island East River Waterfront Pier This Summer - RIOC Bringing In Food Trucks To Operate At Pier

Another welcome sign of spring and summer approaching with sunny skies, warmer weather and relaxing at the Roosevelt Island East River waterfront.

After completing the renovation of the West/Subway Pier, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) today put out some outdoor tables

and chairs

for staging purposes on the Pier

today.

Instead of Pier NYC, Ms Indelicato said that RIOC intends to bring in Food Trucks to operate in the area this summer and

2012 Outdoor Restaurant At Pier And Main Street Food Trucks

that RIOC purchased the Pier NYC tables and chairs for $4,500 from the Riverwalk Bar & Grill owners.

Here is the discussion at April 7 RIOC Operations Advisory Committee meeting.

I'm looking forward to the return of the food trucks and eating at the Pier.

UPDATE 4/28 - RIOC has more information here for potential Operators of the Roosevelt Island Waterfront Pier Concession. There is a new RIOC administration in place that emphasizes its desire to work with potential Waterfront Operators to make a success of the Waterfront Pier Concession.
