Second Roosevelt Island Public Exposure Incident In Week - Male Exposed Himself To Female And Fled, Search Made With Negative Results

Reported last Friday on a June 20 exposure incident that occurred at the 6th floor Motorgate Garage just before 6 PM.

The 6/20 -21 Public Safety Report indicated:
Exposure Of A Person - Male and female subject issued summonses and released.
Later on Friday (June 22), the Roosevelt Island Public Safety Report listed another exposure incident and I sent the following inquiry to Public Safety Director Keith Guerra:
The Daily Public Safety Report for today (just posted on RIOC web site) lists another exposure incident - one yesterday and this one today.

Exposure of a Person - Male exposed himself to a female and fled.  Search made with negative results.  NYPD refused.

Please provide additional details regarding place, time, age of victim, whether the two incidents are related and any other relevant information that the Roosevelt Island community should be aware of regarding the incidents.

Also, today's Public Safety report indicated that incidents are for 6/20 - 21. I think that is incorrect and the incidents should be for 6/21 -22. Am I correct?

Thank you.
Will update when a response is received.

UPDATE - RIOC Press Spokesperson replies.

Last night, we got a chuckle out of PSD warning a skinny-dipping couple at the Manhattan Park Pool around midnight.  An officer rolled by on the promenade and suddenly the poor girl couldn't find her shirt.

The guy exposing himself and then fleeing, though, sounds quite concerning.

At what point is NYPD brought in?? RI is part of the larger NYC community and these kinds of incidents should be reported to the NYPD as they may be linked to a person they're currently looking for.

CheshireKitty said...

Kate is right.  Do these incidents get reported to the NYPD?  Also - is it time for the PSD to install more surveillance cameras in Motorgate - which would not only enhance safety but also discourage break-ins and the other current theft du jour, tire theft.

JimmyLaRoche said...

The psd detectives share their information with the local 114pct all the time, vise versa.

If you KNEW what psd does, which is LAW ENFORCEMENT, you would know that. I guess your another 30 year resident who was clueless all along.

These two that got summonsed were not exposing others, but exposing each other.

This island is all about jumping to conclusions.

JimmyLaRoche said...

That tire theft incident sounded awfully suspicious. It would be extremely hard for someone to just go to motor gate at random and look for rims and steal them. Makes no sense. Hard to not get noticed either rolling them down the bridge either. Those things are heavy. You cannot fit 4 18" rims in a sedan without ruining your interior. A van maybe, but, why only one car in all of motor gate. If I was a rim thief, I would steal the most expensive and most profitable rims off of the statistically known Honda accord and Nissan maxima models.

Obviously some of you guys need to go through detective school. Unheard the FBI is best!

JimmyLaRoche said...

So riddle me this. If RI is part of a bigger NYC community, why are we not giving our psd the tools for the job and more support?

Go stop a car with no gun in east New York or Harlem!

I hate to say it but it's a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. God forbid.

Katie Cunningham said...

Jimmy, the fact is that Public Safety isn't a part of the police dept, and therefore, as you stated, unqualified to handle incidents of a criminal nature (rather than nuisance related); this is why they should be reported to the NYPD. It was understood that the two person incident was most likely just two people getting "carried away" with each other, it's the male exposing himself to a female and fleeing that is alarming.

I didn't mention how long I've lived here as it isn't penitent.

JimmyLaRoche said...

Yet, they handle criminal incidents all the time. THEY ARREST people and put them through the "system". They don't apprehend and hold the suspect for nypd. PSD actually is part of the wheels of justice on this island. I for one appreciate them and thank them for the low crime. If you haven't noticed, it's only them with an OCCASSIONAL nypd presence answering a call for 911.

A single incident is disturbing? If it was multiple, that's disturbing.

My best guess, it was a hospital patient

Katie Cunningham said...

I never indicated that Public Safety does a terrible job, calm down. The fact is that flashing or indecent exposure can be a precursor to a more violent sexual crime. A "best guess" shouldn't stand in for actual law enforcement best practices. This was one incident and my point is that I hope the PSD will work with NYPD on this matter in order to prevent any future incidents of this kind or worse as it didn't mention that they were in the Daily Report.

As an aside, it is possible to get your point across just as well without making derogatory comments towards the person you disagree with.

JimmyLaRoche said...

You still did not answer my question. Would YOU do public safety's job with no protection?

Sorry for getting fiesty, but when I needed them once, they helped me and were great. I will never forget that. I always say hello to them on the street. A gesture not many do.

I always see Cheshirekitty on here asking for nypd. Nypd this and that. How much differently do you think nypd would have handled and continue to handle this situation? PSD install more cameras in the motorgate? How,it doesn't belong to them, how are they going to put anything in there.

zoilalexie said...

The male exposing himself and fleeing could have been a man urinating against a tree behind a building for all we know.  Don't get carried away with this thing.  Obviously, the male & female were going a little too far with one another.  Apparently, the owner of the Blog can't see that and wants them to be connected - makes for a better story.

Jimmy is right.  PSD does a great job here.  They've helped my family out quite a few times.  They are courageous for doing the job of the NYPD without guns.  They keep this "Nabe" safe and that's why people think they don't need guns.  But, they do.  Instead of criticizing or saying the NYPD should come here (they're not) just say "Thank You" to them for putting themselves on the line for us - for the little pay they get.

Katie Cunningham said...

Again, a desire to have our public safety dept. SHARE INFORMATION with the NYPD is essential to good law enforcement. It is not a declaration of the PSD not doing their job. Criminals often begin with actions such as indecent exposure and continue, if they aren't apprehended, and escalate their behavior to more violent crimes. It may be that this is a person the NYPD has on their radar and, especially since the person wasn't apprehended, I'm interested in understanding at what point communication to NYPD begins.

Our PSD is confident enough in their abilities not to take a concerned resident's suggestions as a c
riticism of their performance, you should follow suit.

JimmyLaRoche said...

Communication? This isn't the crime of the century.

I am sure if it's a major crime, they open their gateway of communication without a doubt.

If its an island thing, so be it.

A single incident doesn't sound like the end of the world. Calm down, breathe in a bag, I heard it works.

Katie Cunningham said...

Sure, it's "an island thing".

Yes, people doing things like exposing themselves surely follow some sort of protocol that restricts them from displaying that same behavior elsewhere. Yes - only begin communicating with NYPD when it's already out of control. Very smart.
