Are Macy's Ancient Wooden Escalators More Reliable than New Roosevelt Island Subway Escalators?

Coming home last night at around 5:30 PM, I noticed that 2 of the 3 street level escalators were not working. At least the working escalator was running in the up direction but why is there still a problem maintaining regular escalator service after the MTA's lengthy repair and replacement program. Hopefully, we can get some answers at tonight's Roosevelt Island Transportation Community Forum.

Reader comments on this post regarding the new escalators include:

Meanwhile, by Friday evening, 10/17, 2 of the new big escalators were out. Meanwhile, the Macy's wooden escalators from the 1930's(?) are still working beautifully.

Update: as of Monday evening, 10/20, 3 of the new big escalators are out. This is the most dysfunctional government project I've ever seen...if you don't count all the rest of them. NEVER support bigger gov't - you're better off flushing the money down the toilet.
For the commute this morning 2 of the 3 sets of Roosevelt Island subway escalators were operating in both up and down direction from the street level to the lower concourse.

The MTA Elevator & Escalator Status page no longer indicates that the Roosevelt Island escalators are out of service as part of the Capital Replacement/Rehabilitation program but two are reported to be just out of service.
