Roosevelt Island Subway Escalators Help Find Your Soul Mate - All 10 Are Working Too
Image of Roosevelt Island Subway Escalators from Roosevelt Island Historical Society President Judy BerdyThough I am out of town this week and cannot confirm by personal observation, I am overjoyed to learn from a reader that after a long absence, all ten Roosevelt Island subway escalators are working today and the middle staircase is open as well. I am hesitant to accept that this is a permanent condition for the Roosevelt Island subway escalators since the MTA Elevator & Escalator status page still lists some Roosevelt Island escalators as being out of service for capital repairs. I remain hopeful that the status page has not yet caught up to the reality on the ground.
We also learn via a Roosevelt Island resident and filmmaker why it took the MTA so long to get the Roosevelt island escalators back in service. The escalators may have been installed with magical matchmaking powers. According to Jeff Lee, not only do the escalators transport riders up and down to the platforms, but they talk to you as well and will help you find your soul mate or at least a date for the evening. Even more reason to come to Roosevelt Island!

So your telling us that we had to endure walking up/down a ridiculous amount of stairs, single file only for an additional, say, three mths all for the "benefit" of hearing a repetitious recording offering obvious information? Absoultely unreal. Roosevelt Island at it's best!
Meanwhile, by Friday evening, 10/17, 2 of the new big escalators were out. Meanwhile, the Macy's wooden escalators from the 1930's(?) are still working beautifully.
Update: as of Monday evening, 10/20, 3 of the new big escalators are out. This is the most dysfunctional government project I've ever seen...if you don't count all the rest of them. NEVER support bigger gov't - you're better off flushing the money down the toilet.
who is in charge of the repetative recording in the train station? It should also say " welcome to RI " and maybe give a short little bio of the island or give snipets of things to do on the island instead of repeating the same thing over and over again. Once or twice every few minutes is ok, but why not make use of the recording...love the video Mr. Lee!
