Look to the Cookie, A Black and White Cookie on Roosevelt Island
Do you remember this scene from Seinfeld's "The Dinner Party". It is one of my favorites episodes and not only because I love black and white cookies. There's also the Chocolate Bobka and Saddam Hussein.
I recently came across a post by The Black and White Cookie Review blogger describing a trip to Roosevelt Island. He visited "wonderful Roosevelt Island" with a friend, played some frisbee and had a "wonderful dinner" at the Trellis Diner until he was persuaded by his friend to get:JERRY: Uhm, The thing about eating the Black and White cookie, Elaine, is you want to get some black and some white in each bite. Nothing mixes better than vanilla and chocolate And yet somehow racial harmony eludes us. If people would only look to the cookie all our problems would be solved.

a coupl'a black and white cookies and glasses of milk. It all looked so delicious.
But after taking a bite:
OOOOUCH! Hard. Like cold steel. It didn't taste like anything I've had before. It was kind of gross. Not vanilla, more just like...white something. And the cake...blecch. Too much cake with too little taste. It was like eating styrofoam.Perhaps, Jerry Seinfeld is right, the lack of a good home grown black and white cookie may explain some of the conflicts and controversies that exist here on Roosevelt Island.
...Hmm. The chocolate side tastes VERY familiar. What could it be? Matt was able to pinpoint it. Like chocolate Betty Crocker frosting. Ahhhh!
And yet, the entire overall taste was unpleasant. I love when a cupcake has Betty Crocker wapped on top of it, but the thick, dry cake made the cookie a chore to eat. We were both very very disappointed. Especially Matt, who as an innocent and less experienced cookie eater than me, was unprepared for the dreams-dashing mediocrity and depressing anticlimactic taste of the below average black and white cookie.
And they always LOOK so good!

If we ever get a bakery back on the island, hopefully this problem will be solved.
You are an optimist. Why would a bakery be any different from any other business on the island, i.e., the worst of its type, with the exception of Starbucks and Duane Reade, which are the same as everywhere else, although with shorter hours. There's a reason why we are the only neighborhood in New York to be thrilled that they opened stores.
BTW, Starbucks has good cookies, albeit of a limited variety and only pre-packed, miniature black and whites, with no telling how fresh they are. The triple chocolate brownie cookies, when fresh, are really good.
Are you saying every business on the island is the worst of its kind? The florist? The nails place? The dry cleaners? The liquor store?
Yes. Compare any of those to similar stores in Manhattan, or even Queens.
The couple of times we did get a decent store, it didn't last. There used to be a Chase Bank branch here. It was replaced by...whatever the bank-like business is near the Chinese take-out place.
A few board meetings ago I heard one of our puppet directors ask how the newleases`were going down with the merchants. Shane said that things were goin well and it would be a short matter of time before all the new leases were signed and the merchants could bring their stores up to sub par instead of how they are. What happened? just more Shane BS?
There seems to be an unwritten rule that every store here should look like it should be in a developing country. Somehow, it's appropriate, given the mindset of the professional islanders that we are a special "community" apart from big, bad, New York City. (If they didn't maintain that attidude, they might have to admit that this is nothing but a failed housing project.)
Maybe I'm also self-deluded, but I think that if the general population here actually wanted to be in New York, rather than afraid of it, things might be different.
