What Happened To Roosevelt Island Adult Softball League - Not Enough Interest So Far

Softball Game At Firmen's Field

What happened to the adult softball league for Roosevelt Island residents? A prior report from RIRA President Frank Farance described an attempt to organize an adult Roosevelt Island Softball League:
Adult Softball. We are trying again this year to have a league. I spoken with the Riverwalk Bar and Grill about having a kick-off meeting in February. I'll have more details in my next column.
A reader of Mr. Farance's report asks:
I never saw a follow-up on the softball. Did I miss it?
Unfortunately, there was not enough interest. Mr. Farance responds:
Looks like it's Zogs. We were never able to get enough interest in this to form a set of teams. In short, we have a handful of people that might be interested in playing, but no team leaders/managers willing to do the work of recruiting/organizing.
Anyone want to step up?

Many thanks for the follow-up.

I managed a team for two seasons last year in Florida but not a whole "league." I "recruited" from my co-workers and their friends so it was a different situation.

I have looked into Zog but I thought it was too expensive and would have liked something that was confined to Roosevelt Island so there would be less travel.

I think that if there are enough people interested in playing and we can get a field reservation along with at least 15 players showing up at a given time, it could begin as something very informal and grow from there.

Agree, I'd love to just play pickup softball, it doesn't need to be a full-blown league. If there was a regular time and 15-20 regulars, that could be fun.

I am in as well for any pickup games, so that makes 3.

I'll revise my minimum down by 20% to 12 (3 baserunners, a batter, and 8 fielders).

I've had success using meetup.com to organize things like this before. It has everything needed to organize people, schedule events, and get RSVP's to know whether enough will show up. I'd be willing to lay out the few dollars required to start a meetup.com group if I thought there was a chance of success.

The one thing I know nothing about is making field reservations on Roosevelt Island. Sometimes there is some insurance-related nonsense too.

Do any of you others know friends who would come? I might have one or two depending on the day.

I'll do one more thing. I'm on an e-mail list with at least 20 people who play soccer on Sundays on Firefighters' Field. I can ask whether any of them would be interested in softball.

We're referring to it as "adult" (I'm 25, btw) but, in the interest of getting players, the minimum age can be set low to 16 or 18.

Perhaps some others have left contact info with Mr. Farance?

Okay... I took the gamble and threw down $20 for meetup.com.

I used a photo from this blog for promotion. Let me know if I don't have permission and I'll take it down :)

We would be more than happy to have a sign up sheet here at Riverwalk Bar & Grill if that helps at all. Anyone interested can come in here to sign up and information can be passed either via phone call or email.
We have had a reasonable amount of requests by our customers for a pick up softball game.
Please feel free in getting in touch with us!

Thanks, Jonathan. That would help a lot.

I put something together: Flyer Link I can drop off a couple copies this evening, if that's alright. http://imgur.com/VjpC8.png

Anyone, let me know if there's something I should change or if you'd like to do a better job yourself :)
