Responding to my question as to how her her week as RIOC President went, Mr. Torres answered last Friday:
My first week has been a whirlwind of activity, filled with meetings with staff, developers and Roosevelt Island residents. I have met with so many people who are dedicated to Roosevelt Island and making the Island a great place to live, work and/or visit. It has already proven to be incredibly inspiring experience. Even though I do not live on the island anymore, I do have a vested interest since it was where I grew up and still have many dear friends that live there. My question would be, how do you plan on bringing the entire island together as a united community as it once was? From what I see and hear from current residents, each building seems to have their own agenda as opposed to working together as the community that it once was. I would also suggest allowing small/family owned businesses open up in the MANY empty store fronts as opposed to corporations (eg Starbucks). Allowing families to own island businesses speaks volumes. Last but not least, SAVE THE GREEN KITCHEN (aka Trelis)!! It is an institution and the heart of the island!

Now that she is getting involved and down to the nitty gritty I would like to suggest that Ms Torres reviews the signage on Main Street (and elsewhere).She should also consider speed bumps
to slow down the traffic,and ask PDS should to enforce (and obey)pedestrian crossings instead of jaywalking from their office to their parking spaces.
She may also want to look at increasing the amount of time people can park at the metered spaces to an hour or 2. If that means increasing the price a little bit, so be it. 40 minutes is not enough time to park to eat a meal on Main Street.
Parking on the street should be reserved for loading and unloading only. There is really no need to clog up the streets. If you need more time than 40 minutes feel free to park at Motorgate or use public transportation.
It costs $7.00 to park at Motorgate for an hour. That's rediculous! Guests who visit the island to share a meal with a resident or employee shouldn't have to pay $7.00 to park for an hour.
Last time I checked this is NYC and driving a car always comes with additional costs. If you don't/can't deal with that you are always free to take the train instead.
You can refill the parking meters on Main St, and if/when PSD ever start to ticket cars without or with expired parking meters there will be more room.

Dana, this is an island with more than 10,000 people. There is no way for it to be a united community anymore. Way too many different interests and beliefs/opinions. I personally don't think, though, that this is a bad thing.
Take Trellis, for example. Most people I know avoid Trellis like the plague for good and not so good reasons. It still is a favorite for long-time residents but the new folks (and not quite so new like me) rather go to the Bar & Grill in Southtown.
We have to accept the fact that RI is being gentrified and it will never be the same as you guys knew it.
It is retarded for someone to suggest PSD officers jaywalk to get to their cars. The day you get a summons for jaywalking on Main St is the day you have a valid arguement. In case you weren't aware, PSD gives out summonses for failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and for not coming to a full stop at the stop signs.
I agree with the suggestion of speed bumps and parking limits should be increased, but no more than an hour. If you need more time, you can always park in manhattan park for up to six hours for $1/hour.
On a third note, be careful what you ask for. I remember the days when psd would summons and tow cars for being one minute expired. I don't drive, so I could care less, but I know a lot of residents were pissed off.
I agree. PSD will not be summoned for jaywalking and by repeatedly flaunting their de-facto privileges
are setting a very bad example for others - just like they do when making u-turns, parking, and riding their bikes (motorized or not) on the sidewalks.
Dear "Anonymous",
RIOC is the glue that can hold the island residents together for a shared vision. Unfortunately that "glue" is only out to make a buck, not to hold true to the vision that the original planners had for the island. Greed always wins I guess. I am just glad that I got to experience the unique vision in its truest form.
I think you are confused about "Greed" at RIOC. The Board is GREEDY and wants to make a buck privatizing their units in the Mitchell Lama Housing Projects. The Board fired President Steve Shane because he was committed to maintaining affordable housing.
I am sorry, Dana, but that is a bit naive, no? Things change over time. If it is for good or not you may want to ask around and you will see that opinions about this are split 50-50.
I personally welcome the changes to the original vision. Others don't. Which one is better? The powers in charge decide that for us. Luckily we are able to elect some of those...
Not sure what greed has to do with anything. The thing is this is a highly capitalistic society which works on the concepts of greed. Even public institutions have to work in this context and if there are things that will bring the RIOC a few bucks but mean that changes to the original vision have to be made, so be it. Nobody can foresee the future for 100 years.
Oh, and to make you happy I am not going to post anonymous.
"RIOC needs to make a buck..." What a concept? I guess it costs money to provide sanitation (including an AVAC system)...and money to clean and beautify the parks...and money to provide 24 hour a day Law Enforcement...and money to subsidize free rent to not-for-profits, cultural centers and synogues...and money to repair roads and the Motorgate...and money to run a Tram system (and a brand new one - at that).
Wake up Dana, all of these benefits cost money. We Roosevelt Islanders reep the benefits of these services provided by RIOC, in addition to City services as well. Sorry you left, but this is the best place to live in NYC, and me and my family are staying.

I see what you are saying. As I said, I do not live there anymore and probably should not speak of something I am not that familiar with anymore. BUT, I do care about that island very much. I figured that there was something fishy about Steve Shane suddenly getting fired. My recent dealings with RIOC have been limited and they get mixed reviews from me. I do know that Steve Shane WAS very welcoming of the RI original kids reunion party that I coordinated in 2009 and his attitude suddenly changed in 2010. This was just before his announced departure, so it makes sense. One of the beautiful things about the way the island was originally planned, was the BALANCED mix of income and race. It worked very well and no matter which building we lived in, we stuck together. That "balance" is being tipped now with so many "luxury" apts going up and Mitchell Lama on its way out. I guess the people that can afford those "luxury" apts have different priorities.
In response to Ron's comment, I also know that capitalizm is based on greed and that things do change over time. The unique, close knit community that once was in 1970s could no longer withstand the values of 2010 or the mind set of families with much higher incomes. I do think that something of the original "vision" for the island could be preserved if the people that lived there wished to make it so. Do not get me wrong, I would LOVE to live on RI now. I just could not afford it anymore. All being said, I still think that RI is one of the best places to live in NYC, "greedy" government and all. I guess my expectations for what is possible has changed too.
