Roosevelt Island Motorgate Garage Elevator Out Of Service - When Will It Be Repaired

Image Of Out of Service Motorgate Elevator

A reader sends in the following message inquiring when a Roosevelt Island Motorgate Garage elevator will be fixed.
Could you please find out why an elevator in Motorgate has been out of order for over two weeks and still has a "temporary out of service" sign on it?
On Monday, I asked Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) VP of Operations Fernando Martinez when the Motorgate elevator will be fixed. Have not received a response yet.

The adjacent elevator is working.

UPDATE 7 PM - Mr. Martinez reports that the elevator repair contractor is awaiting a piece of equipment and the elevator should be back in operation in a week or two.

It's been out of service for at least three weeks now. It's actually no big deal, though. There are stairs close by. In the few cases you really need the elevator there is still one that's working fine.

it is not a big deal but the elevators look old, dirty and when people come to island to visit you they say that that building looks messy and old....also, the escalators are not working since......I do not remember....(?)...

Name one parking garage in this city that does not look like Motorgate. Name one quasi-public elevator in NYC that is not disgusting (ok, I admit there are a few - a VERY few). Welcome to New York City. If you don't like it, leave.

to the 2:36pm comment:

That is not the NYC I know..Maybe for you, ALL elevators, ALL parking garages look the same. Get some class and enjoy New York City. It is a nice city when get a touch of nice people around you. I guess for you ALL places in the world look the same...poor guy...and please be corteous. Maybe YOU have to leave this city if you are not getting anything from it....

I agree with 2:13 & 3:33 comments and strongly disagree with 2:36. 2:13 has hit the nail on the head - this is not just "any" parking garage in NYC. Motorgate is part of the supposedly closely cared-for "fiefdom" of RIOC. Ms. Torres: Commenter at 2:13 has identified the perfect next project for RIOC - Please clean up/paint/fix the flooring/elevator - everything that's old disgusting crumbling - in Motorgate!

Oh, please. We are not living in Utopia. That may have been the dream when somebody dreamed up this idea of Roosevelt Island decades ago. It failed. RI is just another NYC neighborhood.

I don't know how this turned into an argument either.

The elevator is broken, and has been for over a month. If the other elevator breaks, there will be only the stairs. Many people use their cars to tote around packages, luggage, children and wheelchairs. An accessible means of arriving at the upper levels of the garage is therefore necessary.

Therefore, the elevators should be fixed.

They should convert the dead space around the elevator/lobby to host the farmer's market. Tear out the broken escalators and you have a great area that could be heated in the wintertime.

I called the RIOC office and they are aware of it. An outside company is coming in to repair the elevator. Maybe you guys should place a friendly call as well. Hopefully, it will be repaired soon.

How about the elevators at the north end of the garage--are they ever going to be repaired?!?!

I don't know. Pick up the phone and find out.

Folks - this is what happens when we *don't* get involved, when we *don't" hold RIOC's feet to the fire - either through the resident Board members or by demanding answers from Ms. Torres or her bosses in Albany: You end up having to walk from one end of Motorgate to the other if you need to use an elevator to exit the structure. You wonder for years why the escalator is sitting there. You are aghast year after year at the all-encompassing griminess of the building. For the amount of money that is going into RIOC, we need accountability, we need to know why these glaring failures to fix/repair/keep up Motorgate continue year after year after year. Please attend RIOC meetings as dull as they are and voice your concerns. Please write to Ms. Torres or Albany about these ongoing problems that have been going on for years and years probably since the time of Pres. Berman.

The current RIOC is as transparent as can be when it comes to how much money comes in and how much is spent on what. If something bothers you, pick up the phone and call the RIOC.

The people we have to hold to the fire are the RIOC Board Members that we elected. We didn't just elect them so they could be an extention of RIRA, or to vote on privatization of the buildings they live in.

We voted for them to get stores in the empty storefronts and to fix issues like the Motorgate. Hold them accountable, because Ms. Torres reports to them. Go to a RIOC meeting and complain to them. Will it help any? I doubt it - but it's worth a try.

RIOC could kill 2 birds with one stone by increasing the parking fees on Main Street to give people an insentive to use Motorgate, which in turn would be able to do proper maintenance thanks to the increased income.
It seems like changes/improvements
have been put on hold until summer (like SouthPark)

10:57pm -- The farmer's market was originally in that space, but Gristede's found a clause in its sweetheart lease with RIOC that forced the market to move a certain number of feet away from its store.

A couple of years before that, we had a genuine NYC Council on the Environment Greenmarket right here on the island. That lasted a couple of years and its disappearance was never explained by RIOC, nor was it covered by the WIRE.

Both elevators on the north side of Motorgate have not been operational for at least 5 years. Why this is never mentioned???
