As the world anticipates Rio Olympics opening next week, we are proud to cheer for our own Roosevelt Island Swim Team athletes, competing at the 2016 Junior Olympics! This swimming championship has gathered every elite swimmer from over 150 swim clubs of Metropolitan Area (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Westchester, Upstate New York, Nassau County, Suffolk County of Long Island). The Roosevelt Island Marlins Swim Team had eight Junior Olympics qualifiers; five of them have competed at the Eisenhower Aquatic Center on July 22-24, showing outstanding results. We congratulate Emir Emre, Mira Goodman, Denys Mialkoskyi, Matija Prokic, and Sophia Shchuchinov!
Emir Emre, Mira Goodman, Denys Mialkovskyi, and Matija Prokic all set personal best records! Sophia Shchuchinov captured 6th Place in 200 Breaststroke, set personal best times in 5 events and earned a spot in 2016 Metropolitan Swim Team. She will represent Roosevelt Island as a part of Metro Team at 2016 Eastern Zone Swimming Championship (August 3-6) which will gather the best swimmers from twelve Eastern States. Sophia will compete at the biggest Age Group competition of the year in 3 events: 50M Breaststroke, 100M Breaststroke and 200M Breaststroke. We wish her best of luck at the upcoming Championship!
While most of our swimmers are already vacationing, we have athletes that haven’t dared to take even a day off during the summer, continuing to improve their technique and results. They have shown their dedication and determination by choosing to spend their evenings in the pool. Since day one, I have seen their drive to improve and their passion for swimming. These athletes have worked hard to finish the long course season strong, as well as improve their stroke technique and build up their endurance for the upcoming season!
Looking forward to another great year at the pool.
