Head Coach Roman Sludnov shares these photos and reports:
RI Marlins Swim Team
Congratulations to all the swimmers who completed their regular season with an outstanding performance at the Junior Olympics hosted at the Nassau Aquatics Center on July 28-30. RI Marlins added three new medals to their annual trophy collection with Sophia Seliger
taking gold on the 200 breaststroke and Denys Mialkovskyi (pictured on right with Finn Olsen on left)
capturing two bronze medals on the 100 back and 100 fly. Taking into account the awards won during the winter Junior Olympics championship by another Roosevelt Island resident, Strahinja Maslo,
the Marlins brought home in total five bronze, one silver, and three gold medals.
These accomplishments have a special meaning for the team who had to train outside of their home pool for almost nine months due to the closure of Sportspark. Thank you to all the swimmers, their parents, administrators, and coaches who worked hard to make this result possible. The new season promises to be even more exciting as more Marlins will join our Champions in climbing to new heights in their athletic performances.
Our April 29th bake/book sale raised $1,068.62 for the team.
These funds will allow Marlins to continue our mission of providing a high-quality affordable swimming program during our 9-month exile from the Sportspark pool.
THANK YOU to our wonderful Roosevelt Island community for such overwhelming support. We are deeply touched by your generosity!”
We are beyond excited to return to our home pool at the Sportspark center next week! Our competitive swimmers will have an opportunity to train every day for the first time in 9 months (!), and we can finally resume our Learn to Swim program. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the pool!
Despite now almost 8-month long Sportspark pool renovations, our island is still home to some of the fastest swimmers in the entire Metropolitan area. This past month our team took part in the major Championships of the short course season: “2017 8&Under Championship” in West Nyack, NY and “2017 Junior Olympics Championship” in East Meadows, NY, and “Zone Qualifiers Championship” in Bronx, NY.
Overall, the Roosevelt Island Swim Team placed 19th out of 115 in Metro (NYC, Westchester and Long Island) - an amazing feat! I would like to thank Coach Andrea, Coach Tyrone, Marlins’ dedicated Board of Directors, and all the team parents for this outstanding season, and share some details from the final meets of the short course season with the entire RI community.
On March 4-5 our youngest teammates represented the club at the Metro 8 & Under Championship. It was a very successful performance with eleven personal best times and one club record. Congratulations to Gabriela Finchelstein (8), Tadija Maslo (7), Rachel Remor (7), and Timur Shchuchinov (7)! The highlight of the championship for our young athletes was its opening ceremony, which included a costumed parade:
The following weekend, eleven Marlins represented Roosevelt Island at the 2017 Metro Junior Olympics. They demonstrated an incredible performance winning in total nine medals, breaking 16 club records and changing 18 personal best times. Great swims by Skander Daghfous (12), Emir Emre (12), Adrian Lengyel (9), Strahinja Maslo (10), Denys Mialkovskyi (9), Matija Prokic (16), Ian Remor (9), Sophia (12) and Timur (7) Shchuchinov, Maksim Tesovic (11), and Stephan Vesselov (12). Congratulations!
We are also extremely proud to finish this season with three more Metro medalists! 7-year-old Timur Shchuchinov became 4-time Metro Champion winning 100 free, 100IM, 25 breast, and 50 breast at the Metro 8&Under Championship, while 10-year old Strahinja Maslo collected 2 Metro Champion titles (in 200 free and 500 free), and placed second in overall scoring among 10&Under Boys at the Junior Olympics. An outstanding accomplishment by the young athletes!
Timur and Strahinja raced together in 4 relays at the Junior Olympics Championship along with their teammates Denys Mialkovskyi (9), Ian Remor (9), and Adrian Lengyel (9), placing as high as 10th in the Metro area.
12-year-old Sophia Shchuchinov was the only swimmer from our team who had qualified to attend two sessions each day of the Junior Olympics Championship representing Roosevelt Island in the evening finals against best swimmers from NYC, Westchester, and Long Island. Despite this challenging schedule, she managed to break club records and win two medals.
Four Roosevelt Islanders participated in the highly competitive Zone Qualifier Championship in Lehman College, Bronx, NY. We congratulate Strahinja Maslo on placing 3rd in 100 free and 500 free, and Denys Mialkovskyi and Matija Prokic, who set personal records at the meet. Sophia Shchuchinov delivered a solid performance in 200 breaststroke finishing 6th in the final.
While these final championships results concluded the short course season, and we as a team have already began training for the upcoming long course competitions, Strahinja Maslo continues to compete for Metro Zone Team. In April he will travel to Webster, NY and race the fastest swimmers in the Eastern Zone in 100 free, 500 free, and relays. We wish Strahinja all the best at the upcoming meet.
Once again, I would like to congratulate our swimmers and their parents on another great season, and thank Coach Andrea, Coach Tyrone for their major contribution to this success!
Coach Roman

Roosevelt Island Swim Team continues training despite Sportspark pool being closed for renovations for almost six month.
The year has brought more personal bests, club records, Junior Olympics and Zones qualifying times, and a record number (9) of Roosevelt Island swimmers ranking among top 25 in the Metro area. 2016 has also ended with a big change for the team, as it welcomed a new Head Coach - Roman Sloudnov - to the Marlins family.
Marlins Board shared their end-of-the-year message thanking the dedicated coaches, hardworking swimmers, and their supportive parents for staying with the team and giving it their 100% this year:
“2016 has brought on the greatest challenges in our team’s almost 12-year history. Marlins’ home pool has been renovated for almost half a year now; in these long months all our staff and families’ patience has been tested again and again, by the concerns about securing another location for training, balancing team budget, hectic carpool commute, and late practice times.
Despite all these setbacks, we have seen Roosevelt Islanders sweep the awards at every swim meet. The swim season is not over, yet we already have 12 Silvers Championship and 6 Junior Olympics qualifiers. THANK YOU for staying strong and sticking with us in the face of all these trials and tribulations.
We are delighted to end 2016 with a four-time Olympian Roman Sloudnov as a new Head Coach for the Roosevelt Island Swim Team. Roman arrived with a wealth of both professional swimming and coaching experience, most recently in the Metro LSC “Match Point” team. He shares our vision and mission, to qualify more Marlins’ swimmers for Silvers and Junior Olympic Championship this season, and then aim for higher goals, reaching the Zones and Junior Nationals.
We see Roman as a strong leader and a good mentor for our swimmers. During this past month on the team, his professional demeanor has clearly proved we are now moving in the right direction. Coach Roman will be instrumental in helping the Board achieve much needed period of stability in 2017, with all of us working together with great persistence towards our common goal – raising athletes who are successful in and outside of the pool.
With Coach Roman on board, we are confident that 2017 will bring us faster times, new victories, more JOs and ZQ cuts, ribbons, medals, but, most importantly, it’ll help our swimmers learn life's most powerful lessons (hopefully through less adversity than this year - wink), gain more self-confidence, develop impeccable character and build stronger friendships.
In swimming and in life, there is a tremendous difference between winning and succeeding. We, the parents, all know too well that while success is not necessarily about the outcome, it is always about the journey.
It has been an absolute joy watching our children grow up together to become the best athletes, friends, and persons they can be. Happy New Year! To be continued in 2017.
Very truly yours,
The Board.”
“I am honored to join the Roosevelt Island Swim Team as the Head Coach.” - Roman Sloudnov reported. - “It is a big responsibility and I am ready to do my best in helping the team reach a new level of the athletic performance. As a coach, I believe that sports help kids take their first steps towards building a lifetime of success. Sense of accomplishment gives young athletes much needed confidence to strive for the best results in anything they do in the future. My goal is to create an atmosphere where all swimmers have a chance to explore their authentic potential.
The past year has been a real challenge for the program, and I want to say thank you to each and everyone who participated in keeping the team united. We broke many records and won numerous medals despite these challenges. In the new year, I wish us to return to our pool and continue the mutual journey towards athletic excellence.”
“Our swimmers continue to work hard in exile from Sportspark, and it shows. At the last few meets our swimmers have again swept the awards. The swimming season will continue after Winter Break, and we are looking forward to more medals, age group records and another great year of swimming. I would also like to thank and congratulate the team and parents for enduring through all this EXILE. There have been a lot of changes in a very short time, but we hold it up to the end. We did a great job as a team.” He also shares some inspirational messages with the team,
“1. United we stand as a team, divided we fall.
2. Work hard, train harder, then victory becomes much more easier to accomplish.
3. Hard work, discipline and dedication is the seed we need to plant in order to reap the harvest of success.
4. Best way to accomplish victory is if failure is unthinkable .
5. Put negativity behind you, and strive with confidence to achieve your goals.
6. The hotter the battle, the sweeter the victory.”
2016 has also proved that Marlins’ youngest athletes, our “Future Stars” (8 & Under division) swimmers, are both fierce competitors and loyal friends.
“The carpool to Astoria has really brought our entire team together. We are grateful to our dedicated parents, who have been organizing it for the past 6 months that we’ve been out of our home pool.” – “Future Stars” Coach Andrea shared.

“It is my pleasure and privilege to work not just with the team’s youngest athletes, but also with their amazing parents and our enthusiastic Board, that truly supports every child’s passion for swimming. While we faced plenty of setbacks this Fall, I sincerely believe Marlins boys and girls will one day look back to this season as a highlight of their childhood.”
In December we celebrated another great year of swimming with food, friends, and black light glow festivities.
Team’s “Learn to Swim” program, available to children as young as 3 years old, has been suspended during Sportspark renovations, which is a great loss for our team. We can’t wait to return to our pool!
As previously reported, after several delays, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) hopes to have the Sportspark pool open in Mid February.
We're almost there.
More information on the Roosevelt Island Marlins available at their web site and Facebook page.
Michael Gavrilchin, the longtime coach of the Roosevelt Island Swim team, has left the Marlins to pursue other coaching opportunities and complete his degree in Sports Medicine. Over the seven years with our team, he has touched the lives of so many Roosevelt Island children and adults! Michael has helped us elevate Marlins to a new level, inspiring a generation of island kids to become competitive swimmers. While we are sad that he left, we know Michael will do a wonderful job in his new position.
We thank Coach Michael for his dedication to Roosevelt Island Swim team, and for passing the baton to our new Head Coach - Roman Sloudnov! We are proud to welcome Coach Roman to the Marlins family and look forward to his leadership contributions.
Our goal for the upcoming season is returning to the renovated Sportspark pool and building a stronger Learn to Swim program and competitive team, while continuing to foster an environment where success at the pool is equally as important as children's social development and academic progress.
Coach Roman graduated magna cum laude from Missouri State University with a BS in finance, and worked with swimmers at Drury University, MO (Division II swim team), trained elite athletes for Brazilian Olympic trials at Gremio Nautico Uniao, Brazil, and, before joining the Marlins, coached for Match Point swim team in Brooklyn. As a professional swimmer, he represented Russia in four Olympic games (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012). Coach Roman is an Olympic Bronze Champion, multiple time World Champion in 100m breaststroke, 2000 and 2001 World record holder in 100m and 200m breaststroke, 2001 European Swimmer of the Year, and the first person to ever swim 100m breaststroke in under 1 minute.
This is an exciting time to be part of the Roosevelt Island Swim Team, we are eager to see our swimmers progress under Coach Roman's stewardship!
Coach Roman and Coach Michael with Roosevelt Island Swim Team members Mira (Juniors) and Tim (Future Stars)
Roosevelt Island Marlins Swim Team visited Coach Scot's "Main Street Sweets" shop to give thanks and say goodbye. The shop's closure is a great loss for the Roosevelt Island community and our team. Scot Bobo has donated to the Marlins, supported our events, and always welcomed our swimmers and their families to his store.
Swimmers made cards
and gave Coach Scot a "Marlins" uniform hoodie
as a small token of appreciation for the past 4 years.
Thank you, Coach Scot, Roosevelt Island Swim Team will miss you!"
Our bake sale was a great success raising $1,132 for the team!
Thank you to all our amazing parents and swimmers who baked, donated and SOLD for the Marlins. And thank you to our wonderful Roosevelt Island community for showing their support for the team today!
We appreciate donations from Roosevelt Island Starbucks branch, Coach Scot at Main Street Sweets, Riverwalk Bar and Grill, Sedky family, Public Safety officers, Saturday market vendors, and so-so many more! The Board is trying to raise as much money as we can this year to balance our budget. We chose to keep our swim class prices the same even though our pool rental is more than double that of Sportspark, and we have less swimmers (no Learn to Swim program).
Click HERE to visit our "Support Us" page and make a donation to the team this season. R.I. Swimming, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, all contributions are tax deductible, and eligible for company monetary matches. You can also donate by making a check payable to "R.I. Swimming". Any contributions, no matter the amount, are greatly appreciated!
Our boys and girls had a phenomenal start to the Fall season, despite training in exile because of the Sportspark pool closure. Eight Roosevelt Islanders: Gabriela Finchelstein, Mira Goodman, Strahinja and Tadija Maslo, Denys Mialkovskyi, Sophia and Timur Shchuchinov, and Maksim Tesovic placed in top 25 swimmers in the entire Metro Area - New York City, Westchester and Long Island! We are also excited to see more Marlins swimmers achieving National rankings this Fall.
Challenging sets at the pool, grueling dryland sessions, the stress of high stakes swim meets, hundreds of amazingly fast and fierce competitors from all over Metro Area, are no match for our young athletes. These results are a testimony to both Marlins’ swimmers and coaches skills, hard work and dedication!
Commuting to train in Astoria has been very difficult for our athletes and their parents. And we are particularly sad that the backbone of our team - Learn to Swim program, Health Club (recreational swimming) and adults classes are still on hold. We are looking forward to returning to our home at the Sportspark pool as soon as the renovations are complete.
This season has also tested us financially, if you would like to support your island team, please shop Roosevelt Island Swim Team online store or donate to us: R.I. Swimming is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, all contributions are tax deductible, and eligible for company monetary matches.
Marlins are proud to represent Roosevelt Island, and will keep working on bringing more of their best performances!”
As the world anticipates Rio Olympics opening next week, we are proud to cheer for our own Roosevelt Island Swim Team athletes, competing at the 2016 Junior Olympics! This swimming championship has gathered every elite swimmer from over 150 swim clubs of Metropolitan Area (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Westchester, Upstate New York, Nassau County, Suffolk County of Long Island). The Roosevelt Island Marlins Swim Team had eight Junior Olympics qualifiers; five of them have competed at the Eisenhower Aquatic Center on July 22-24, showing outstanding results. We congratulate Emir Emre, Mira Goodman, Denys Mialkoskyi, Matija Prokic, and Sophia Shchuchinov!
Emir Emre, Mira Goodman, Denys Mialkovskyi, and Matija Prokic all set personal best records! Sophia Shchuchinov captured 6th Place in 200 Breaststroke, set personal best times in 5 events and earned a spot in 2016 Metropolitan Swim Team. She will represent Roosevelt Island as a part of Metro Team at 2016 Eastern Zone Swimming Championship (August 3-6) which will gather the best swimmers from twelve Eastern States. Sophia will compete at the biggest Age Group competition of the year in 3 events: 50M Breaststroke, 100M Breaststroke and 200M Breaststroke. We wish her best of luck at the upcoming Championship!
While most of our swimmers are already vacationing, we have athletes that haven’t dared to take even a day off during the summer, continuing to improve their technique and results. They have shown their dedication and determination by choosing to spend their evenings in the pool. Since day one, I have seen their drive to improve and their passion for swimming. These athletes have worked hard to finish the long course season strong, as well as improve their stroke technique and build up their endurance for the upcoming season!
Looking forward to another great year at the pool.

The Roosevelt Island PS/IS 217 PTA and Roosevelt Island Swim Team partnered up to support NYC Department of Education summer Water Safety initiative. The Marlins hosted three free water safety skills practices at the Sportspark Pool for our neighborhood school's students in June.
For those of you who couldn't attend the classes, here are some tips on how to stay safe:
NYC DOE: "New York City beaches opened on Saturday, May 28, for the summer season, and City pools will open on June 29. The safety of our students is our top priority and we want everyone to stay safe near and in the water. Below are Top 10 Tips to Be Water Safe:
1. Lifeguards Keep Us Safe
Lifeguards are there for your protection, so only swim where lifeguards are present, follow directions, and always swim with a buddy, friend, or parent.
2. Learn to Swim
It’s never too early —or too late— to learn to swim! Learn about free and low-cost swim lessons by visiting the Learn to Swim page (http://nyc.gov/parks/learntoswim) or call 311 for more information.
3. Never Leave Children Unattended
Teach children the importance of water safety and stay within arm’s reach while swimming. Never leave children unattended near water, even when lifeguards are present.
4. Obey All Posted Signs and Flags
Read all signs and follow the directions of lifeguards. Swimming is only permitted in designated areas and never allowed when a red flag is posted at the beach.
5. Watch for Dangerous Waves and Rip Currents
If you are caught in a rip current, do not panic. Rather, remain calm and begin to swim parallel to shore. Once away from the force of the rip current, swim back to the beach. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current – even a strong swimmer can become exhausted quickly.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and piers. All beachgoers should only swim in areas monitored by lifeguards, closely heed the instructions of lifeguards, and pay attention to any flags and posted signs. To learn more about rip currents, read safety tips and information provided by the National Weather Service (http://www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov/).
6. Stay Alert and Aware of Your Surroundings
Be careful not to swim tired, cold, or far from safety, and never use alcohol while swimming, boating, or supervising children near water.
7. Wear a Life Jacket when Boating
Even expert swimmers should wear a life jacket while boating. Never use air-filled or foam beach toys instead of a life jacket.
8. Don’t Take Unnecessary Risks
Never go wading unless swimming is permitted and be cautious of deep water. The first time you enter the water, ease in or walk in — do not jump or dive.
9. Be Safe in the Sun
When at the beach, pool, or park this summer, wear sun screen, drink plenty of fluids, and wear light and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.
10. Know Before You Go
Check weather conditions and get real-time beach opening and water quality information by visiting the Health Department’s Beaches page (http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/environmental/beach.shtml) or call 311."

and their families participated in Roosevelt Island Swim Team Annual Championship on Thursday, June 2nd. This informal Mock Meet concluded the very first year of training for many of the youngest Marlins’ members. It was a great way for children and their parents to get a preview of the competitive swimming world, years before they are ready to partake in a real swim meet.
25 yards long races for Learn-to-Swim program swimmers included:
noodle race with instructor’s assist,
kick,
freestyle,
breaststroke,
backstroke.
Marlins Future Stars, Juniors and Seniors, competed in series of 50 yards events, including fun relays. Young swimmers were especially delighted to see their instructors – Roosevelt Island Swim Team’s alumni! – race each other.
Spectators cheered for every race
– from Beginners to Swim Team graduates visiting Roosevelt Island during their college Summer Break, and important life lessons were learned as some of the youngsters had to fight their fear of jumping in or cope with losing their goggles during the dives. The meet was “pretend” but the effort that children put in was quite real. All participants were excited to receive Championship ribbons.
Congratulations to all of the swimmers! Parents and grandparents, thank you for joining in the fun. A big thank you to Marlins’ coaches and instructors “timing” events, to RIOC staff for keeping the deck in order, and to Swim Team Board Members, who organized this fantastic opportunity for island families to have a great time at the Sportspark pool.

Again, I congratulate families, swimmers and coaches with amazing results this season. This success is not just given; it was earned through sweaty drylands, rigorous sets in the water and consistent desire to take every opportunity to become better.
I’m very proud and happy of what we have done this season! Special thanks go to Coach Kris who joined us this season and accomplished every task and goal that was envisioned in the beginning. By putting his energy, enthusiasm and mastery of stroke correction he amplified our Juniors group performance and strength, motivating them and showing them path to fast results.
I have no doubts if they continue working hard, success is inevitable in upcoming seasons! Finally I would like to thank every parent for being part of this very time consuming sport, working collaboratively with coaches, attending long hours swim meets, supporting kids, celebrating loud when kids succeed and comforting them when they fail but encourage not to give up, teaching them to be patient. Thank you all!
