Citi Bike Boyz Stunt Rider Attempts Roosevelt Island FDR Park Memorial Wall Jump Challenge Before Being Spotted By Security Staff - Did He Succeed?

Roosevelt Island's FDR 4 Freedoms Park has become a popular spot for skateboarders to sneak in and attempt to jump from the Louis Kahn designed Memorial Wall before being spotted and kicked out by the Park's staff or Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department.

According to Jenkem Magazine You Tube video transcript:

... Roosevelt Island is on the east side of Manhattan in between Manhattan and Queens and it's just like a skinny island with this big monument at the end. It's like the most amazing skate spot ever...

Jenkem Magazine adds:

... If you’re still not familiar with Citi Bike Boyz, they’re a group of New Yorkers who roll around the city doing ridiculous stunts on the iconic blue rideshare bikes, filming and sharing their hijinx for our viewing pleasure...

... This time around, we hit up head Citi Bike Boy Jerome Peel to see if he’d be up for the challenge of hitting the Roosevelt Island monument....

Here's the Citi Bike Boyz Roosevelt Island challenge at the FDR Park 4 Freedoms Park.

Earlier this year, an out of town Skateboard team attempted a similar airborne jump. Here's what happened.

Roosevelt Island Bike Safety Virtual Town Hall Thursday October 29, You Must Sign Up To Attend - Roosevelt Island Street Safety Advocates Start A Conversation For Pedestrian And Cyclist Safety

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) is hosting a Bike Safety Virtual Town Hall Thursday October 29:

RIOC, along with local elected officials and guests from Citi Bike/Lyft, Bike New York, and 511NY Rideshare, will be hosting a Bike Safety Virtual Townhall to discuss questions and concerns, as well as provide needed information to cyclists riding on Roosevelt Island. Join us on Thursday, October 29th at 6:30 PM, via Zoom. Registration is required for this event. To register or submit questions, email: RIBikeSafety@rioc.ny.gov

With the increasing number of bicyclists on Roosevelt Island, safety has been a growing concern on the part of pedestrians, be they elderly, children or anybody walking on the sidewalk, waterfront promenade perimeter, park pathways or crossing the street. Green Roosevelt Island Neighbors (GRIN) founder Anthony Longo reported an incident this weekend which is, unfortunately, all too common. According to Mr Longo:

As I’m sure you have seen, issues with bike riders have increased on the island lately. RIOC’s signs seem to have only made it worse. I can’t even count the amount of near misses I’ve seen on the sidewalk behind 480. People live tweeting their Citi bike adventures while they ride between small children and pets. Or just dinging their bell without slowing down, expecting people to move out of their way. I had a guy the other day holler at me, as he rode past, that it was no longer a sidewalk.

I witnessed an incident yesterday that I cannot ignore. It happened just passed the RIOC offices on the east promenade before the RI bridge. Ironically where the path is at its widest. I was speaking to an elderly friend of mine, and her caretaker. A south bound, unmasked, biker (not a Citi bike) approached. Instead of yielding to the pedestrians he chose to make a derogatory comment to the caretaker as he tried to blow right between them. I stepped in front of him so he had to stop. I asked him if he seriously thought that it was their responsibility to move out of his way. Apparently he did. He made another comment to that end and rode on....

... There is not enough time in the day for me to call PSD every time I see something like this. I filled out a RIOC tikkit just to have it on record. I do not expect much to come with that though. It’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.

A parent recently wrote:

The CITIBIKES freely operate wherever they want including the riverwalks/sidewalks even in presence of public safety. I called public safety and I was told to call RIOC and I did. I was told that it will be referred to management and look into the contract they had with CITIBIKE.

There has always been posted rules and signs in the island to protect us all. There should be designated bike lanes only.

A group of Roosevelt Island resident bike riders recently got together to form "Roosevelt Island Street Safety Advocates (RISSA). The aim of RISSA is to start a conversation and develop a program for Roosevelt Island Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety. Take a look at their suggestions and let's start a conversation for the benefit of bike riders and pedestrians.

Roosevelt Island Transportation This Weekend, Subway, Tram, Ferry & Citibike - Keep Your Social Distance And Wear Face Covering - MTA Has New Real Time Subway Data Map Too

According to the MTA, there is Roosevelt Island F Train Service to and from Manhattan this weekend. Also, Roosevelt Island E Train service to and from Manhattan.

And there's a new live Subway Map.

There is a Roosevelt Island Tram Cabin 20 passenger Covid-19 Social Distancing limit.

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) was recently asked by a resident:

There has been a lot of complaints again about terrible tram congestion and waiting times at weekends, with one resident saying that she waited an hour to get back from Manhattan in the tram queue.

Can you look into the issue again and consider solutions such as a red bus service on weekends for tourists and retaining the tram for residents during this period ?

The Red Bus Shuttle to Manhattan is hardly used during the week but really necessary at the weekend when limits on numbers inside each tram, alongside visitors, makes using it impossible

RIOC spokesperson Jessica Cerrone replied:

Thank you for your feedback. We have notified the Transportation Director about this issue, however, we are not considering priority access to the Tram for residents.

Here's the NYC Ferry Roosevelt Island Astoria Route Schedule which now extends to East 90th street on the Upper East Side.

Also, Roosevelt Island has a new transportation option with the recent addition of Citbike docking stations.

Too Many Bicycle Riders On Roosevelt Island Sidewalks, Not Safe For Pedestrians - Citibike Rider On Sidewalk Today Passing Farmers Market In Front Of Watching Public Safety Officers

As reported June 18:
The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) addressed bike safety issue in their June 17 Advisory:
Bike Safety On Roosevelt Island

As we look forward to having Citi Bike on Roosevelt Island in July, we must also take steps to improve bike safety. In addition to stepping up enforcement, the Public Safety Department is also in the process of ordering new signage that will remind bike riders to obey speed limits, be mindful of crosswalks and to be careful of those around them. We will share these signs with you once they arrive....

... During June 4 RIOC Board of Directors Meeting, bike safety was discussed by RIOC President Susan Rosenthal, RIOC Board Director David Kraut and Public Safety Chief Kevin Brown. RIOC Director David Kraut suggested a broader discussion within the Roosevelt Island community about bike policy may be needed.

PSD Chief Kevin Brown noted an increase in bike riders during the last few months of the Pandemic. Chief Brown has instructed PSD officers to be more visible on the street and to advise bike riders of the rules and regulations for safe and slow bike riding. Chief Brown added there will be greater enforcement of bike rules and regulations. Also, Chief Brown said that signage will be placed in certain areas that will instruct bike riders to dismount and walk with their bicycles.
Not any enforcement for the Citibike rider on sidewalk passing Farmers Market today.

Roosevelt Island Citibike Docking Stations Installed Yesterday, NYC Council Member Ben Kallos Announces Start Of Service and Takes First RI Citibike Ride - RIOC PSD Officers Handing Out Safe Biking Rules To Riders On Main Street Last Night

Yesterday, the NYC Citibike sharing program finally arrived on Roosevelt Island.

NYC Council Member Ben Kallos and Roosevelt Island residents

cut the welcoming ribbon for Citibike as the docking stations were being installed at the Roosevelt Island Tram Station, Motogate Plaza next to the Roosevelt Island Bridge/Foodtown Supermarket and Southpoint Park. A fourth docking station will be installed near the Octagon Building.

According to press release excerpt from Council Member Kallos:
Citi Bike is coming to Roosevelt Island with brand new stations. The first stations are being installed today and throughout the week and will be home to 74 bikes as the bike share program expands to Roosevelt Island to serve its residents for the first time. In 2014 there were more requests for CitiBike in Roosevelt Island’s zip code than anywhere else in New York City, with a bikeshare pilot dating back to 2010. This was a campaign promise of Council Member Ben Kallos who has spent years working with Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation and Citi Bike now operated by Lyft to finally get wheels down.

Citi Bike for Roosevelt Island was one of my first campaign promises,” said Council Member Ben Kallos, whose Fifth District includes Roosevelt Island. “Now, the years of work to make this happen are paying off. I am looking forward to riding a Citi Bike on Roosevelt Island after years of working with RIOC, RIRA, and residents, through multiple owners of Citi Bike, in pursuit of this expansion. None of this would have been possible without the power of the press and a commitment to covering this and every issue by the Roosevelt Islander. From Four Freedoms to Lighthouse Park and destinations in between, Citi Bike is going to make getting around Roosevelt Island more convenient and more fun.”...

... RIOC is proud to support this pilot program that gives our residents and visitors a convenient, environmentally responsible way to experience Roosevelt Island,” said Shelton J. Haynes, RIOC’s Acting President and CEO....

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) has emphasized that the Citibike program on Roosevelt Island is as a pilot project subject to change and adjustment as becomes necessary.

Citibike And More Bicycle Riders Coming To Roosevelt Island - RIOC & RIRA Looking For Solutions To Improve Bike Safety Including Go Slow Signage, Separate Striped Lanes For Bikes & Pedestrians, PSD Enforcement Of Rules & Dismounting Of Bikes In Certain Areas

Reported last Tuesday that installation of 4 Citibike Docking stations with approximately 72 bicycles will begin at the end of June with service starting in July.

Reaction from Roosevelt Island residents varied - some supported:
  • CitiBike stations will be a plus for residents to easily get around and will allow those coming to the island the opportunity to get off their bikes and shop on the island if our stores and restaurants are ever allowed to open.
  • This is excellent news.
  • While I think it’s time we get Citi Bike, four stations is just ridiculous.
 Others have safety concerns:
  • The quantity of bikes on the island is getting out of hand and dangerous.
  • I was walking tonight and was kind of being harassed by four city bike riders. They ride and get really close to you as they pass throwing one off balance!
  • Damn there’s already tons of these guys over here. Is there anyway we can stop this?
And some suggestions for implementing a safe Roosevelt Island bike plan:
If we’re going to allow an increase in bike traffic then there needs to be proper management.

Dedicated MARKED 2way bike lanes / proper signage. We have to implement this now and not wait until after the fact. It’s harder to implement boundaries when you allow a free for all to take over. NO bikes on the Main Street sidewalk. Also, no bikes on the Queens side path between Riverwalk Point and South Point. The pathway is too narrow. For this section the dedicated bike path should direct bikers to Main St to East Main Street.

It can work with proper leadership and management.

The bikes are coming, so we need solutions.

To be honest we need to also work on reducing the number of vehicles. If you are just visiting the Island—the lookie loos, you should park at Motorgate. From there, you can walk/bike/red bus. This is NYC. I don’t understand why walking is so offensive.

We have to take control of our home.

I wish RI was a gated community. I digress!
The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) addressed bike safety issue in their June 17 Advisory:

Follow along with this virtual bike ride on the streets, promenade and sidewalks of  Roosevelt Island

During June 2 Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Operations Advisory Committee video conference meeting, I asked:
Residents have been concerned over the increased number of bike riders, mostly appears to be visitors, riding on sidewalks and waterfront promenade creating unsafe conditions for pedestrians, including elderly and kids.

What can RIOC do about creating safe sidewalks and pathways. Signage is not enough. Will PSD officers be stationed outside to monitor safe bike riding.
RIOC President Susan Rosenthal answered that RIOC is putting together a team with the Public Safety Department and Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Interim President David Lawson to find a solution for bicycle riding safety issues including signage and striping the Promenades for separate bike and pedestrian sections.

Installation Of Roosevelt Island Citibike Docking Stations Beginning At End Of June, Service Starts In July Says RIOC - Some Residents Concerned About Safety, Is Roosevelt Island Prepared For Increased Bike Traffic

Feb 2020 RI Citibike Presentation

As reported March 9:
Citibike sharing docking stations are finally coming to Roosevelt Island this spring nearly 10 years after the first Roosevelt Island bike sharing demo in 2010 and in 2014 being the neighborhood with most requests for the Citibke system.
Today, I asked the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):
Any update on when Citibike will begin service on Roosevelt Island?

Have there been any changes due to Coronavirus pandemic?
RIOC Public Information Officer Terrence McCauley answered:
Fortunately, the service has not been delayed due to COVID-19. The installation is scheduled to begin at the end of the month with the service to begin sometime in July.
Reactions from Roosevelt Island residents to Citibike is mixed. Some very happy that the service is available on Roosevelt island.

Others are concerned about safety issues from increased number of bike riders speeding on the Promenade.

And riding on sidewalks.

There will be 4 Roosevelt Island docking stations with a total of approximately 72 bicycles located at
  • Southpoint Park
  • Adjacent to new comfort station at Firefighters Field between Tram Station and Ferry Dock

Citibike sharing docking stations are finally coming to Roosevelt Island this spring nearly 10 years after the first Roosevelt Island bike sharing demo in 2010 and in 2014 being the neighborhood with most requests for the Citibke system.

As reported February 27:

RIOC Vice President of Capital Planning and Projects Jonna Carmona-Graf briefed the RIOC Board Members last evening about the proposed deal to bring Citibike to Roosevelt Island at four locations suggested by Citibike with a total of 72 bicycles. The locations from south to north are:
  • Southpoint Park
  • Adjacent to new comfort station at Firefighters Field between Tram Station and Ferry Dock
  • Under the Helix at Motorgate
  • Adjacent to the Octagon Soccer Field on Manhattan Side of East River Promenade....

On March 5, the RIOC Board of Directors approved a pilot program for Roosevelt Island Citibike sharing docking stations at the locations described above except the Octagon station will move from the West Promenade to the Octagon Building parking lot. A request to move the docking station from the Tram/Ferry area closer to the F Train subway station was not accepted at this time but depending on usage could be re-evaluated.

There may even be a few motorized Citibkes.
