Sunny Skies And Warm Saturday On Roosevelt Island Today Brought People Outdoors For Fresh Air And Relaxation - Were People Social Distancing And Wearing Face Coverings To Fight Coronavirus?

According to the NY Times today:
On the second day of May, New Yorkers were greeted with sunny skies and the warmest weekend so far this spring. People got up off their couch, put on their shoes, donned their face coverings, and left their cramped houses and apartments for the nearest park — desperate for fresh air and a little exercise....
What was Roosevelt Island like on this beautiful sunny Saturday. Were people social distancing and wearing face coverings? The Twitterverse reported:

I walked up and down Roosevelt Island today from Lighthouse Park to FDR 4 Freedoms Park. My impression was the great majority of people were social distancing and wearing face coverings. Residents told me that the NY State Police were handing out face coverings at Southpoint Park to those not wearing face coverings.

It appeared that alot of visitors were enjoying Roosevelt Island's open space and parks today based upon the number of cars looking for parking spaces near the Cornell Tech campus and Citibike riders I saw. As the weather continues to get nicer, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp is going to have to come up with some plan for controlling the number of visitors to Roosevelt Island.

Heres are some scenes today from Lighthouse Park

Celebrate National Take A Hike Day With Minute Of Boulder Colorado Eldorado Canyon Adventure , Taking Walk On Roosevelt Island Is A Bit Different On RI Historical Tour Walk

Today is National Take A Hike Day.

It's so true that there are many hiking trails in Boulder Colorado and here's one minute of my hike on an El Dorado Canyon Trail outside Boulder (Click full screen icon at bottom right of video for great view).

I learned you have to watch out for bears and rattlesnakes on the trail.

Taking a Roosevelt Island hike is not quite as dramatic on our Roosevelt Island Historical Tour.

Municipal Arts Society Jane's Walkers Tour Roosevelt Island Guided By Roosevelt Island Historical Society

Jane's Walkers Lining Up At RIHS Visitors Kiosk From Roosevelt Island Historical Society

As previously reported, Roosevelt Island was one of the sites for the Municipal Art Society's Jane Walk  last weekend.

Received this Jane's Walk report from the Roosevelt Island Historical Society:
At least 50 off-Island visitors attended the Roosevelt Island Historical Society's session of Jane's Walk. Prompted by an extensive mention in The New York Times, they sought an insider's view of the community, institutions and history of the Island.

Grouping themselves by interests, visitors assembled to listen and learn about Southpoint Park, Tram Plaza, Main Street and Lighthouse Park.

Informal discussions about the residential buildings, the history of the 19th and 20th Century social service institutions, the architecture and the community organizations that knit residents together ensued for 90-minutes.

The walks were led by Judith Berdy, President of the Roosevelt Island Historical Society, Deborah Dorff, Janet Falk and Francine Lange.

Take A Municipal Arts Society Jane's Walk Around Roosevelt Island This Sunday Or Any Of 70 Additional Free Walks This Weekend - Learn More About Urbanist Jane Jacobs Too

The Municipal Arts Society (MAS) is presenting Jane's Walk NYC this weekend. According to the MAS:
On Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6, join thousands of New Yorkers and “take your eyes to the street” for Jane’s Walk NYC – a weekend series of more than 70 FREE guided walks (and bike rides!) throughout New York’s five boroughs. All Jane’s Walks are free and there is NO registration required. Stroll through a beloved neighborhood or discover one never visited. Cross bridges, hike through parks or take part in a very special walk from one end of Broadway to the other. Started in Toronto in 2007, this international program was created to commemorate the life and legacy of urbanist Jane Jacobs.
Among the more than 70 NYC Jane's Walks is one on Roosevelt Island this Sunday. From the MAS:
Date: May 6
Time: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Walk Host: Judith Berdy, of the Roosevelt Island Historical Society
Accessibility: Partially Accessible - curbs, uneven terrain, busy sidewalks
Description: Follow Judith Birdy, the President of the Roosevelt Island Historical Society on a Jane's Walk that will go north through 1970's new town to discover the history of the island, and learn how it has changed from an island of institutions to a residential community. Learn about future plans for the island, including a new university science campus. This is a great Walk for those wishing for a moderate length walk (this walk will cover approximately 12 blocks).
Meeting Place: Roosevelt Island Historical Society Visitor Center, Tram Plaza, Roosevelt Island
Ending Place: Roosevelt Island Historical Society Visitor Center, Tram Plaza, Roosevelt Island
A list of more MAS Jane's Walk NYC this weekend available here.

Future Of Roosevelt Island Walking Tour on Saturday, September 20 - Or A Video Taxi Tour, But Without The Presentations

The American Planning Association's (APA) New York Chapter is organizing The Future of Roosevelt Island Walking tour to be held on Saturday, September 20 starting from the Manhattan Tramway Station at 11 AM. According to the APA:
Join us for a walking tour of Roosevelt Island. The population of this planned community has been growing as the next phase of development gets underway. The Island had less than 10,000 residents in 2000. Today it is estimated to have 12,000 with several thousand more expected to live in the new residential buildings in development in the Southtown neighborhood. We will look at the new development from many perspectives:
  • history and role of the master plan
  • urban design opportunities on the waterfront
  • green building technologies and adaptive reuse
  • impact on transportation.
Presenters will include:
  • Judith Berdy, Roosevelt Island Historical Society
  • Barbara Clark, PRC Management
  • Judith Heintz, ASLA, WRT Design
  • Andrew Jackson, The Hudson Companies
  • Dr. Floyd Lapp, FAICP, Columbia University
  • Dr. Laxmi Ramasubramanian, Hunter College
  • Patrick Rodgers, Costas Kondylis Architects
I hope the organizers or one of the participants is able to record the walk and presentations. Would be very interesting for everyone not able to attend to see.

UPDATE - 9:30 PM - If you are interested in the tour please RSVP to the organizers. There may not be any more space available.

UPDATE - 9/18 - I am advised that the walking tour has been sold out. There is no additional space available for the tour.
