American Constellation Cruise Ship Spotted On NYC East River Passing Roosevelt Island - That's A Big Boat

Wow, this is a big boat cruising the NYC East River passing Roosevelt Island

and under the Queensboro Bridge

today.

I don't think the boat was looking to dock at the new Roosevelt Island ferry dock.

The boat is the American Constellation,:
... the latest cruise ship from American Cruise Lines. Uniquely designed to navigate the inland waterways of the East Coast, American Constellation brings guests to beautiful ports the larger ships can't access. In the intimate atmosphere onboard, guests will find the largest staterooms in the industry, spacious lounges, as well as observation decks and private balconies that offer spectacular views of the passing landscapes...

See Roosevelt Island From East River Boat Passing FDR Park To Lighthouse Park

Roosevelt Island residents often see boats passing by on the East River. For a change of pace, here's what Roosevelt Island looks like from a boat slowly moving up the East River passing the FDR Four Freedoms Park, Cherry Tree Promenade, Queensboro Bridge, Riverwalk, Rivercross, Island House, Westview, Manhattan Park, Octagon, Coler Hospital and Lighthouse Park last May.

Would you like to take a boat tour around Roosevelt Island on Saturday April 18?

The FDR Four Freedoms Park tweets:
and adds:
The AiA and Four Freedoms Park Conservancy will jointly offer a special guided boat tour around Roosevelt Island. The tour will focus on Four Freedoms Park and the past, present, and future of Roosevelt Island. Stephen Martin, Conservancy Director of Design and Planning, will chronicle the fascinating and painstaking team effort that led to the faithful 2012 completion of Louis Kahn’s 1973 design for the FDR Four Freedoms Park located at the island’s Southern tip. Specific design goals and construction details of this uncompromising memorial will be clearly identified and discussed.
It's a two hour tour starting at 1:30 with the boat departing from the Chelsea Piers. Cost is $58 per person. More information here.

Here's a boat ride I took in 2013 on the Hudson and East River.

It's a great way to see the NYC waterfront.

Why Was Staten Island Ferry Passing Roosevelt Island On The East River Yesterday Afternoon?

Image of Staten Island Ferry Passing Roosevelt Island on East River From Jonathan Kalkin via Instagram

I received several inquiries yesterday reporting the sighting of the Staten Island Ferry passing Roosevelt Island on the East River Saturday afternoon and asking why?

Roosevelt Island resident Jonathan Kalkin shares the picture above and Tweeted:
Staten Island Ferry are you lost again?
In July of 2009, I also saw the Staten Island Ferry

 passing Roosevelt Island and posted:
... One of the pleasures of living on Roosevelt Island is the chance to see all kinds of boats traveling up and down the East River in the West Channel between Manhattan and Roosevelt Island. We often see barge, tug, tour, motor and sail boats of all sizes, Coast Guard, NYPD, FDNY Boats as well as speed boats, kayaks and jet skis.

What we don't usually see but I did see on Saturday afternoon while walking on Roosevelt Island's West Waterfront Promenade was the Staten Island Ferry making it's way north on the East River passing Roosevelt Island.

I wondered what could be the reason for this? Was the Staten Island Ferry lost, did it make a wrong turn in NY Harbor or was it just trying to escape Staten Island and explore other parts of New York City?...
The answer to what the Staten Island Ferry was doing on the East River yesterday afternoon is the same this year as in 2009. From SI Live:
Staten Island Ferry becomes a floating carnival for 'God's Exceptional Children

... The Marine and Aviation Anchor Club, Branch 119, along with more than 24 other volunteer groups, came together and transformed the Staten Island ferryboat into a rocking party, complete with three DJ’s, clowns, hundreds of balloons and thousands of hot-dogs.

The “Boat Ride for God’s Exceptional Children” set sail Saturday morning with more than 3,000 children and adults with a variety of special needs for the 37th time....
