It's High, It's Far & It's Gone, First Inning Home Run At The 2024 Annual Roosevelt Island Baseball Little League Coaches Game Last Saturday At Capobianco Field - It's Nice To Know We Can Still Play A Little Bit Of Baseball Says Shortstop And League Commissioner Arya Shirazi

The Roosevelt Island Baseball Little League (RIBLL) played their annual Coaches game last Saturday, June 15 at Capobianco Field.

According to RIBLL Commissioner and Coaches Game shortstop Arya Shirazi:

We had our coach's game which is always a highlight. We play it between the Minors Championship and the Majors Championship. We had a great turnout, I think it was 13 on each side so about 26 coaches on a beautiful day. I was the captain of Team Revolution and I think that we acquitted ourselves well.

The game ended in a 7-7  tie. Everybody played well. It was a spirited game. The number one goal is no injuries and we accomplished that so it's a successful game. It's just fun to be able to get out on the field and kind of show our players that we can't only tell them what they should be doing, occasionally we can show them how to do it as well.

It's nice to be able to go out there and know that you can still play a little bit of baseball. Great fun and a great way to kind of wind down the season....
Watch a little bit of the RIBLL Coaches Game including a towering opposite field home run and a pretty good slide into home. But without instant replay, we don't know if Coach Bart touched second on his way around the bases or not.

Nice job pitching by 81 year old Jimmy (Pop Pop) Starace too. Jimmy's been teaching Roosevelt Island Little League Red Chilies team players and Coach Scot's field players to pitch for 8 years. Jimmy drives from Staten Island every weekend to help his grandsons and all the kids on Roosevelt Island.

Here's the final out, good sportsmanship team handshakes

and post game interview with Commissioner Arya Shirazi.

The RIBLL All Girls Game is 2 pm Saturday June 22 at Capobianco Field.

As reported earlier this month, the RIBLL received a $5 Thousand grant from SNY (the television home of the NY Mets) for being an outstanding NYC baseball league.

The 2025 season starts up next spring.

Roosevelt Island Baseball Little League Selected As Outstanding NYC Baseball League By SNY Play Ball And Awarded $5 Thousand Grant Last Saturday Prior To Annual All Star Game - Watch Video Of The Award Ceremony

The Roosevelt Island Baseball Little League was awarded a $5 Thousand grant from SNY Play Ball (the television home of the Mets and Jets) during a ceremony last Saturday June 2 prior to the start of the League's annual All Star Game at Capobianco Field.

According to SNY:

SNY Play Ball presented by Toyota has awarded the Roosevelt Island Baseball League with a $5,000 grant for the necessary field maintenance equipment to keep the conditions safe for play, and to provide essential baseball equipment for their 175+ youth ballplayers....

Roosevelt Island Baseball Little League Commissioner Arya Shirazi accepted the ceremonial check from SNY

and said:

... Today is a very special day for Roosevelt Island baseball and the Roosevelt Island Baseball League. In addition to it being the annual All Star game, we have a very special presentation today.

SNY Play Ball is a wonderful organization. Some of our kids had the opportunity to attend and participate in an on field clinic at City Field two years ago through SNY Play Ball and for those coaches and parents and players who took part in that, it was a very, very special opportunity.

Two years later, our league was nominated as an outstanding baseball league in the City. Every season, SNY Play Ball chooses one baseball league in New York to recognize with a very very generous grant to help towards operations and equipment and it's very, very needed and appreciated. It was an honor to be nominated and it's even more of an honor to be selected as the 2024 recipient...

... Every year before the All Star game, I always feel the same emotions. That's pride in seeing our players. Seeing our Majors All Stars, the leaders of the baseball community. I used to remember when they were Minors players. Now I remember when a lot of our Majors Allstar were T-ball players which makes me feel old but it also really makes me feel proud and that's exactly the way it should be.

The older players showing the younger players how to be baseball players but much more important how to be teammates and for coaches and parents seeing these kids grow up and seeing them as T-ball players or as Minors players and then seeing them grow into the people they're becoming and the people they will become and knowing that our baseball league played a small part in that is the most rewarding thing of all to me....

... this honor for our league is because of all of you. It is because of the players, the coaches and the families who make up this league and your dedication and your passion to what we do here that makes this a special place...

Watch the full remarks of Roosevelt Island Baseball Little League Commissioner Arya Shirazi.

The Roosevelt Island Baseball Little League completed a 9 game  2024 schedule. The playoffs are scheduled for Saturday June 8, Championship and Coaches Games Saturday June 15 and All Girls Rule Saturday June 22 at Capobianco Field.

Roosevelt Island Little League 10 Game Season Opening Day Last Saturday, Watch Interview With Coach Danny And T Ball Players Having Great Time - Volunteer Coaches And Additional Funding Requested From Community, Storage Space Near Capobianco Field From RIOC Needed Too

Very few things in life are better bringing a smile to one's face than Opening Day of the Roosevelt Island Little League baseball season which began it's 10 game season last Saturday, April 8 with T-Ball players (5-6 year olds), followed by the Minors Division (7-10 years old) and then the Majors Division (11-14 years old).

I spoke with the League organizer and Coach Danny Vithlani during the T Ball game for the youngest baseball players.

Coach Danny showed some skill doing play by play during the T Ball game too.

The Roosevelt Island Little League could use some help with more volunteer coaches and funding.

According to the Roosevelt Island Little League Go Fund Me Page:

The 2023 R.I Little League Baseball Season is set to kick off! On April 8th, me and my co-director Arya Shirazi will commence our 6th year running this beloved community league. It has grown tremendously popular, and this year we have more registrants than our already thin budget can support. Because of this, we are short on funds for key equipment items and costs that we must be able provide. These include:
  • Additional Uniforms not covered due to registration surplus
  • Baseballs for each age group
  • USAA Little League regulation bats -Catchers/Umpires protective gear
  • Team Equipment bags
  • Tees
  • Medical Supplies (First aid kits, icepacks, etc)
  • Groundskeeping tools
  • Trophies
  • Ongoing season costs (damaged equipment, fill-in umpires, pizza parties, etc)
  • Big picture improvements (Pitching machines, uniform upgrades, equipment upgrades, etc)

Along with these core items, there are many improvements and upgrades we would like to make. This program has been truly meaningful to the children and families of this community. Our league places deep emphasis on community and childhood development. Our network of dedicated volunteer coaches & parents are unbelievable! The teamwork, camaraderie and joy these kids experience playing baseball with their friends is unrivaled! It gives us great pride to watch it happen every Saturday.

Unfortunately, the league has simply outgrown the budget, and we have failed to receive additional funding. So I come to you for help! Whether you and your children participate in the league or not, we welcome donations! Every dollar towards this youth & community development-based league truly goes a long way towards the experience these kids have. Anybody that has participated in our league for the past 5 years can attest to that. We couldn't be more grateful for the support we have. We just need a bit more to get where we want to be. We thank you in advance for your generosity. What makes this league special is the people it is made up of!

Thank you so much,

Danny Vithlani & Arya Shirazi

The Roosevelt Island Little League has been asking the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) for some equipment storage space near Capobianco Field for more than a year with no response. Perhaps this year, RIOC will respond and the Little League equipment can be stored near Capobianco Field instead of Coach Danny's apartment.

Little League Mom Shares A Perfect Day For Baseball At Roosevelt Island Capobianco Field - It's A Little Bit Of Heaven On Our Roosevelt Island Field Of Dreams, All Star Game Sunday June 5

Roosevelt Island Little League Mom Kaja Meade shares a perfect day for baseball at Capobianco Field:

Hours every weekend with friends… new and old… and seeing first hand how it does take a village to raise these small (and growing) people! Growing up on the island can be like living in a park! ❤️🚠. I even bought lawn chairs this year?!

All star game this weekend! Are you coming out to meet the neighbors, and watch some baseball!?

Roosevelt Island Little League Coach Danny Brasco adds:

The Roosevelt Island Little League All Star Game is one of the more special moments of the season.

Four exemplary players are selected from each Minors & Majors division team. The game is played in a fun hybrid style, that combines age groups and teams.

The older guys play one inning and then the younger guys play the next, switching on & off in a nine inning game. The young up & coming players get to be on a team with the Major league All Stars, who are both great players and great leaders/teammates. In turn, the older guys root for and encourage the Minors players and it makes for a fantastic game that has been an absolute home run these past 2 seasons

The Roosevelt Island Little League All Star Game is 4 PM Sunday, June  5.

I spoke with Coach Danny, Coach Coach Arya Shirazi and NYC Council Member Julie Menin at the Roosevelt Island Little League Opening Day.

Scenes From Last Saturday's Roosevelt Island Little League Opening Day, Watch Kids Play Ball, Interview With Coach Danny & Arya And City Council Member Julie Menin Throws Out Ceremonial First Ball

The Roosevelt Island Beacon Program Little League (RILL) 10 game baseball season began last Saturday morning at Capobianco Field starting with T-Ball players (5-6 year olds), followed by the Minors Division (7-10 years old) and then the Majors Division (11-15 years old).

It was a beautiful spring day for baseball. Here's a look at some of the action from a Minors game.

Meet RILL organizers Danny Brasco and Arya Shirazi who tell us and NYC Council Member Julie Menin about the League.

According to Coach Danny:

Arya and  I have been running it for five years now. It's a non-profit league, it's totally free.

200 plus kids some years on the Island and off island come to play in this league and it's really been a gem of the community.

I grew up here, played in the league myself and it had a very profound impact on me as a kid and now it's a privilege to run it as well with Arya who comes from Queens and brings his kids and has made an amazing impact on the island too... ... Baseball is a fantastic metaphor for life and that's the fabric and culture that we build in our league...

Roosevelt Island's NYC Council Member Julie Menin attended opening day and said:

I'm so happy to be here. We were thrilled to be a sponsor of this. It's so important to have the kids out here having fun, playing sports and learning great life lessons so we're thrilled to be a small part of this.

Coach Arya added:

It's just a great. What better way to spend a beautiful spring day than out here with kids of all ages playing baseball. It's a real treat.

Ms Menin threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the start of the first Majors game and also congratulated the players in the Minors Division after their game with a traditional good game handshake.

The 2022 Roosevelt Island Little League opening day was not the first time Ms Menin threw out the first pitch at a baseball game. In 2019, she did it at a NY Mets game.

Come out to Capobianco Field on Saturdays thru June 18 to cheer for our Roosevelt Island Little League players.

Scenes From The 2021 Roosevelt Island Little League Season For The Kids And Kids At Heart - Division Championship Games And Coaches Game Too

The 2021 Roosevelt Island Little League baseball season began Saturday, April 17 and played through June 19 with Division Championship Games for the kids and a Coaches Game for the kids at heart too.

Roosevelt Island Little League wife and mom Suzy del Campo Perea reports and shares these photos:

When parents received on March 5th the email from the RI Little Leagues Coordinator Danny about the baseball program coming back this Spring, it was not only parents and children excited: the coaches got that shine in their eyes and were ready to go back to the field.

To be honest, when I told my husband Coach Roberto about the Little League happening this year I noticed a smile on his face, the shinning in his eyes, and his usual calmness thinking out loud: where is my glove? Our first comment was: “Coaches game? It’s going to be awesome, we have been waiting for 2 years for it to happen again.”

I am pretty sure that the reaction was similar among all our returning coaches: Excitement.
Arya and Danny, the coordinators, planned out the Little League exceptionally well and almost all the previous years coaches were more than eager to come back to coach. Some of those coaches have been volunteering in the little League since it started 6 years ago.

The coaches organized a scrimmage to be able to have balanced teams among the 3 categories: T-ball, Minors and Majors. The goal was very clear, to provide kids with a safe and supportive environment to learn and practice a Sport, have fun, and to have what all the kids and parents have been missing: socialization of their kids among their peers, teamwork and if possible a victory every single game.

The Little League had over 100 players from age 5 (Kindergarten) to 14 yrs old (HS Freshman) all genders and all abilities, and 24+ coaches. Those coaches are the heart of the League. We had a wide array of coaches from very young coaches single with no kids, as well as a very experienced coach, and great player that is a Grandpa Jimmy Starace Sr.; female coaches, adults with no kids, coaches that have played before as well as others that have never played before. The common characteristic that they share is the Sense of Community to give Love back to our kids, to RI youth!

Every Saturday morning, the coaches of T-ball were at the field as early as 9am to get the little ones playing. They stay calmed and offered words of encouragement. It is not an easy task to have about 9-12 children 5-7 yrs old learning a sport, trying to hit and catch a ball and have fun at the same time. The coaches patience is formidable.

Minors and Majors coaches had a more difficult task, to create a team that can hit, catch, throw, and be quick to make the right decision. Majors coaches were at Capobianco field every single Saturday afternoon. These coaches gave the kids a sense of belonging in a team, gave them amazing afternoons of training during the week, not even rain can stop them. Minors Grey Vultures took advantage of the muddy Pony field, and led by Coach Ben, they learned to slide! Who cares about some mud EVERYWHERE when the kids and the kids at heart were having so much fun and a lesson on top of it!

Coaches moved back and forth carrying the huge baseball bag loaded with equipment without complaint. They arrived early on game days to make sure their players warmed up and were ready to have the best day of their week.

All coaches supported each other, there was no coach that will not lend a hand when needed even if they weren’t asked. They cheer for all players, and they kept tabs on each other's games. The willingness to coach the kids made the difference in the lives of these kids and their families.

Plenty of times coaches were congratulating younger players down Main Street: “Great game! You had fun?” “I know you hit really good. Keep up the good work!” That is the spirit and the normalcy of Roosevelt Island that they brought this Spring.

We had 10 regular games, one All-Star game, semifinals and the Finals plus the Coaches game. All teams won some games and lost others, coaches made sure that a positive attitude and respect for the team played against were at the top of the list. Some coaches brought treats for the kids, sponsored pizzas for weekday games, and kept the spirits high.

The most waited, expected and exciting game of the whole season was the coaches game. Grey and Blue coaches vs. Red and Green. What a game! We even got back a very well loved and respected coach: Matt Hoskinson who came to play with his friends. We had pitching for the Red&Green team Mr Jimmy Starace Sr, and for the Grey&Blue Ben Rose. The umpire was Eugenio García, Blue Majors player.

The bleachers were full. Parents, players, friends, sons, daughters, neighbors, even residents of Coler came down to watch and cheer every single play. The coaches finally got to play,
and we got to see how suddenly these adults that gave so much love to our kids were transformed into kids
that just wanted to enjoy the moment that they have been waiting for the last 24 months.
There were strike outs, there were outs on first, second and third, even at home.
There were almost home runs, almost cause the grown trees prevented the balls to land at Grandpa Al Lewis playground. Everyone cheered the whole game.

This game was the culmination of a season that gave us so much. The season gave the kids a sense of normalcy, they belong to a team and they weren’t  behind a screen. We got fun, joy and got so many accomplishments. To parents, it was a relief to feel that finally we could move back to a much normal activity where our kids can be together and play. And for the coaches the time to give back to their community, for their kids, the friends of their own kids (if any)  and for all the kids of RI; an opportunity to teach a sport they love, to see smiles on young faces and to enjoy every second of being part of the Roosevelt Island Little League.

To me and to so many more, the stars of Spring 2021 are RI Little League Coaches! Muchas Gracias

Thank you so much for all the love you gave to RI, you know how special you are to my family. I just hope that next year on top of a Coaches Game we can celebrate the season at any RI spot (hope we can get some recognition from our RI Business for all of you).
Roosevelt Island Little League Coach Ben Rose reports on the Division Championship Games:

The Roosevelt Island Little League, is sponsored through the Roosevelt Island Center of Community Development (RICCD). The league started it’s season in mid-April and offered a 10-game season, free for all players, and comprised mainly of Island kids, as well as some of our neighbors from Astoria and Long Island City.

The league organizers and managers are Arya Shirazi and Daniel Vithlani.  They volunteered countless hours and Saturdays to ensure a wonderful season for players and their families.

Roosevelt Island Little League Baseball 7 To 10 Year Old Kids In Need Of A Volunteer Coach For Season Beginning April 17 - Promote Fair Play, Team Effort, Sportsmanship And Make New Friends Too

The Roosevelt Island little league baseball season begins next Saturday, April 17 and our youngest players

are in need of a coach.

Roosevelt Island Mom and Little League Baseball volunteer Susy del Campo reports:

Our RI Little League Baseball is still in need of a Minors Coach

Every year a handful of parents (Dads and MOMS), Grandparents (we love Mr S!), and Roosevelt Island residents with no kids volunteer

Image Of RI Little League baseball coordinators Arya And Danny
for 10 weeks of baseball for OUR Children.

This year, we are bringing back baseball, with all precautions and measures, but we still need URGENTLY 1 baseball coach for Minors.

Minors Division is ages 7-10.

This is what you need to know to become a coach:

  • Willingness, a good heart and the commitment to be there for 10 Saturday games and 1 weekday practice per week
  • Weekday practices will be scheduled based on your availability
  • The season begins on April 17 and concludes on June 19
  • You do not need to be A-Rod or Mariano, Babe Ruth or even Fernando Valenzuela to be a coach. There are drills and exercises online to help with the basics of batting, throwing and fielding
  • ALL THE OTHER COACHES and Coordinators will help you and support you throughout the season
  • Our league promotes Fairplay, Team Effort, and Sportsmanship
  • You will make new baseball friends
  • We will play a Coaches game at the end of the season (we have been waiting for that for soooo long)

Can we count on you to step up and be a Minors coach?

Do you know anyone on RI that you think ideal to be a coach?

Remember female or male, young or very adult, with kids or without, everyone is welcome to be a baseball coach or assistant coach.

Email back for more info about the open coaching position to susy.delcampop@gmail.com

Congrats To Local Roosevelt Island Kid Jon "Boog" Sciambi Named TV Play By Play Announcer For Chicago Cubs - Hosts Annual Project Main Street Fundraising Softball Game For ALS Families At Capobianco Field In Memory Of His Roosevelt Island Friend Tim Sheehy

Congrats to local Roosevelt Island kid Jon "Boog" Sciambi being named the Chicago Cubs play by play TV announcer

According to Marquee Sports Network press release:
Marquee Sports Network today announced the hiring of Jon “Boog” Sciambi as the Chicago Cubs television play-by-play announcer. Sciambi has served in numerous roles with ESPN since joining the network fulltime in 2010, most prominently as the voice of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball for MLB on ESPN Radio, and as the regular play-by-play voice on Wednesday Night Baseball telecasts for ESPN since 2014. ...

Boog Sciambi returns every year to Roosevelt Island for the annual Project Main Street ALS fundraising softball game at Capobianco Field in memory of his friend, Roosevelt Islander Tim Sheehy.

Sports Illustrated has more from 2018 on Jon Sciambi's work with Project Main St:

For those who grew up on Roosevelt Island, it was just like being back in Little League.

They were playing ball with their friends at Tony Capobianco Field, the park they grew up playing at. They still talked to friends and family through the fence as they waited for their turn to bat. If they shanked a foul ball down the first base line, with some luck they could see the ball splash into the East River. The only difference was why they were there.

The Fourth Annual Tim Sheehy Softball Classic was this past Saturday, and was the second half of a week of fundraising efforts by Project Main St. and Team Gleason. The two organizations seek to improve the quality of life for individuals living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease....

and learn about Project Main Street's Roosevelt Island origins from this podcast interview with Jon Sciambi.

Congrats again to Roosevelt Islander Jon "Boog" Sciambi,  the new Chicago Cubs play by play TV announcer.

Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run Competition For Boys And Girls 7-14 Years Old Comes To Roosevelt Island Sunday April 14 Says Coach Scot - Test Your Skils At Local RI Event And Advance To Finals Competition During All Star Week

Roosevelt Island is hosting a MLB Pitch Hit & Run event Sunday April 14.

According to Roosevelt Island Baseball Coach Scott Bobo:
On Sunday, April 14 from 11a - 2p, we are hosting a Local Competition of MLB Pitch Hit & Run at Capobianco Field. Below is the info from the MLB Press Release:
DESCRIPTION
Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run is intended to encourage youth participation and emphasize the FUN element of baseball. Since there is NO registration fee, everyone has the opportunity to participate. Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run tests three of the most fundamental aspects of baseball -- pitching, hitting and running.

PITCH: Participant is tested throwing strikes to a designated Strike Zone target.

HIT: Participant hits a ball off a stationary tee for distance and accuracy.

RUN: Participant is timed, starting from second base, touching third then touching home plate.
All of the events are individually scored and converted to a total point score through the use of conversion tables.

Participants will compete in each of the three components of Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run and accumulate a total score based on his/her performance. Awards will be based on the highest score in each age group for each of the three skills, plus an All-Around award for best cumulative score.

LEVELS OF COMPETITION
Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run is a national grassroots program that has four levels of competition -- Local, Sectional, Team Championship and National Finals. The first level is of a LOCAL scope. Everyone must participate in a local competition in order to advance to the higher levels. Champions at the local level advance to a SECTIONAL Competition. At this level, the Sectional All-Around Champions become eligible to advance to the TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS, which are held during June in all 30 Major League Baseball markets. The culmination occurs at the NATIONAL FINALS held annually during All-Star Week.

COMPETITION RULES AND AGENDA
Register in advance at https://pitchhitrun.leagueapps.com/events/994505
All participants must provide a copy of a valid birth document for age verification at all levels of competition, as well as the printed and signed waiver.

Kids can arrive any time between 11am and 2pm. We will take groups of kids through all three skills about every 20 minutes. Kids will be placed in a group based on their arrival time, and can be in the same group with kids of any age, although their scores will only be compared between kids of the same age group, see AGE VERIFICATION CHART below. Kids may have to wait for one group to finish before their group can begin. It's best if the kids do not all show up at 11am or 2pm, as smaller groups will complete the skills more quickly. The awards will be given to the appropriate leaders in each age group when the last group completes their rounds, around 2:30pm. You do not have to be present to be a winner.

AGE VERIFICATION CHART
Age is determined as of July 17, 2019. The following chart is an age group breakdown for the Major League Baseball Pitch Hit & Run events in 2019:
Age 7/8
July 18, 2010 - July 17, 2012
