Car Window Smashed and Portable GPS Stolen From Parked Car At Motorgate Garage Plus Other Roosevelt Island Crime News

The Roosevelt Island 24 Hour Incident Report for March 20-21 indicated the following:

Criminal Mischief- Vehicle passenger side window smashed, G.P.S. only item missing, NYPD on scene.

Roosevelt Island Public Safety Director Keith Guerra provides some additional information on incident.

The vehicle that had its window broken and portable GPS stolen was parked in the Motorgate. Thieves often seize the opportunity to break into cars which have a portable GPS system in plain view (usually on the windshield). Please reiterate to your readers the importance of removing these portable GPS systems from the windshield and either taking them with them or securing them in the trunk. It is also wise to wipe the circle left on the glass from the GPS system to hide the fact that they have one.

Mr. Guerra also advises that the Public Safety Department has new temporary headquarters.

Please be advised that the RIOC Public Safety Department has been temporarily relocated to 504 Main Street, while the old headquarters is renovated. The phone number is still 212-832-4545. Construction is slated to commence on Monday, March 23rd and will be completed in approximately 4 months. We have temporarily secured 3 parking spaces opposite 504 Main Street for our marked Patrol cars. Reservation of the 3 spaces opposite 552 Main Street is needed for authorized Construction vehicles so that traffic on Main Street will not be compromised. Again, this is temporary and should not inconvenience the residents of the island too much. We remain at your service.

The Roosevelt Island Public Safety Monthly Blotter for February 2009 is now publicly available. The Blotter differs from the Daily reports in that it is more descriptive of incidents in which the Public Safety Department responds to and also includes the incident location. For instance:

2/16/2009 888 Main St Two residents were performing a Craigslist business transaction. This was a violation of policy. Due to the size of the item it cannot be moved without an appointment. Tenant and resident were advised of this and the condition was corrected.

2/11/2009 688 Main St PSD Officer went to his car to find it had been broken into with radio stolen from dash and satellite radio system taken. Other personal belongings in vehicle thrown around. Photos taken of damage. And

2/17/2009 R/O 645 Main St NYPD officer notified PSD to report victim who was assaulted by 9 black males. Victim was walking home when one subject asked for the time and then proceeded to punch him in the face. Victim ran home and notified 911.

Blackwell House Broken Windows - What Is the Future For This Roosevelt Island Landmark?

I received a message and these photos from a reader showing the back porch of Blackwell House with the broken windows pictured below. I asked RIOC President Steve Shane the following:

A reader sent in some pictures of broken windows in the back portion of Blackwell's House. Is the responsibility for fixing the windows with RIOC or Historical Society? Any idea when they might get fixed? Also, has any decision regarding the ultimate use of Blackwell House been determined yet? If the house was being used or had a live-in caretaker, acts of vandalism would be less likely. Perhaps something similar to the plans for the Hamilton Grange House in Harlem might be possible.

Mr. Shane response:

Fixing the window is RIOC's responsibility. The matter of a live in custodian has been thoroughly discussed, but is very problematic because of the condition of Blackwell House.

Mr. Shane followed up with:

Glazer was there yesterday to measure. Should be installed by Friday.

Good job in responding to broken window but at what point will the condition of Blackwell House be such that it can be used for some purpose other than just staring at it?

Several Car Windows Broken at Motorgate Garage Yesterday

Roosevelt Island Daily Public Safety Incident Report is showing a series of car broken window at the Motorgate Garage. After an arrest last spring, many of these type of incidents at Motorgate has stopped occurring. Public Safety Department Director Keith Guerra says

The broken windows at the Motorgate seemed to have occurred around the
same time.

Hope this is not the beginning of a trend.

Criminal Mischief - PSD officer found exit door handle on floor and reported to Management. Service will fix condition.

Criminal Mischief - PSD officer observed vehicle window broken in motorgate. Search was made with negative results. Motorgate office was notified and had no info on car owner.

Unsecured vehicle - PSD officer observed car window open. Motorgate office notified and attempt was made to contact owner with negative results.

Unsecured vehicle - PSD officer observed car window open. Motorgate office notified and had no info on owner.

Unsecured vehicle - PSD officer observed car window open. Motorgate office notified and had no info on owner.

Aided - Officer found elderly female on ground. Aided stated she tripped. EMS was called and aided refused to go to hospital.

Aided - Officer responded with EMS to apt. Tenant told EMS that he fell but refused EMS.

There continue to be acts of vandalism at Roosevelt Island's Motorgate Garage with two more broken car windows. From the Roosevelt Island 24 hour Public Safety Incident Report:

4/7/08-700 AM to 4/8/08-700 AM

Graffiti-540 Main Street in stairwell "J" on the 1 st floor. Search for the subject made with negative results.

Criminal mischief- R/O 551 Main Street on the East Seawall a Concert Garbage Can was turned over and broke. Search for the subject yielded negative results.

Criminal Mischief- At 688 Main Street (Motorgate Garage) a vehicle's window was broken. Search for the subject yielded negative results.

Papers Served- At 546 Main Street PSD served eviction papers.

Investigation-/Suspicious substances- At 475 Main Street the door person found a package sent to a tenant that had a white powder substance. PSD responded. The substance was raison powder. It was sent by a friend in London.

Criminal Mischief- At 688 Main Street (Motorgate Garage) a vehicle's window was broken. Search for the subject yielded negative results. No record on the owner of the vehicle per Central parking.

What is going on at the Motorgate? Maybe the new Segways should start patrolling Motorgate?

Another Vandalism Incident at Motorgate Parking Garage

Despite the March 13 arrest of a suspect in a Motorgate vandalism incident, another broken car window and property theft occurred at the Roosevelt Island Motorgate Parking Garage on March 14.

From the 3/14-3/15 34 hour Public Safety Report:

Petit Larceny (From A Vehicle)-At 688 Main Street (Motorgate Garage) a vehcile 's window was broken and a tool box was taken. NYPD and PSD responded and reports done. Search for the subject yielded negative results.

Be careful and pay attention when you are in the Motorgate Garage. If you spot something suspicious give the Public Safety Department (212-832-4545) or NYPD a call. Criminal Mischief - Male stated parked his vehicle at Motorgate at roof area. Vehicle rear tires slashed both sides of vehicle scratched. PSD Conducted a search for subjects with negative results. Owner refused NYPD and will file a report with Central Parking.

Hazardous Condition- At 688 Main Street in the Motorgate Garage the lights are out in levels "3B", "6A", and "7B". Central Parking attendant notified. Public Safety to monitor the area.

Hazardous Condition- At 688 Main Street (Motorgate Garage) in levels "6A", "6C", "6D' and "4B" lights were out. Central Parking Attendant was notified and will notify the Electrician to come and reset the circuit breakers. Areas were monitored by PSD frequently.

0700 hrs 03/06/08 - 0700 hrs 03/07/08
Hazardous condition - PSD observed lights out on level 6A, 6C, 6D of motorgate. Central Parking was notified.

0700 hrs. Friday March 7th 2008. thru 0700 hrs. Saturday March 8th 2008.

Hazardous condition - in motorgate various lights out Motorgate Supervisor notified

3/11/08-077 AM to 3/12/08-700 AM

Criminal Mischief- At 688 Main Street (Motorgate Garage) a vehicle window was broken. NYPD responded and prepare a report. PSD searched the Garage for the subject with negative results.

Criminal Mischief-At 688 Main Street (Motorgate Garage) 3 vehicles windows were broken . PSD searched the Garage for the subject with negative results.

Aided-At 688 Main Street an ill person was taken to the Hospital by EMS.

3/12/08-700 AM to 3/13/08-700 AM
Criminal Mischief- At 688 Main Street a vehicle window was broken. Search of the Motorgate Garage yielded negative results for the subject.

3/13/08-700 AM to 3/14/08-700 AM

Criminal Possession - Stolen Property At 688 Main Street (Motorgate Garage) subject arrested by PSD.

Investigation - At 688 Main Street a resident found the gear box shifter moved. Doors were locked and no damage to the vehicle. NYPD refused.
