Tired Of Being Stuck In The Apartment During Coronavirus Stay At Home Time? Try Allergic To Salad Roosevelt Island Virtual Cooking Classes For Kids, Families And Adults

Are you looking for fun and creative activities to keep yourself, children and family busy during the Coronavirus Roosevelt Island Stay At Home time? And learn something useful too? Then, check out the Virtual Cooking classes being offered by Allergic To Salad.

According to Allergic To Salad founder Stacy Ornstein:

Hi there, my son goes to Roosevelt Island's PS/IS 217 (1st grade) and my company, Allergic to Salad brings cooking class to the Beacon after-school program. Beacon hasn't yet moved to virtual cooking classes, but I do think it's something Roosevelt Island families might find of interest.

Many PS/IS 217 students have been in our Allergic to Salad culinary classrooms during after-school and I wanted to let people know we continue to offer classes in an interactive live virtual format. They are our same awesome life skills/technique building classes. Kids 5+ years can complete the classes solo.

This week's 5-10 year olds are making "cook later" (with an adult) homemade pasta and red sauce. Next week middle and high schoolers are making homemade Pierogis. Classes are vegetarian, and offer a lot of equipment and ingredient substitutions, so are simple to personalize and work around any allergy.

Available for ages PreK thru High School (plus a free family and adult classes coming in May). Classes are low cost and due to some generous donations we some scholarship funds available.

Island Kids Host Beat Explorers Free Creative Writing, Music Production & Career Development Program Showcase October 4 For Roosevelt Island 6-9th Graders - Culinary Program October 13 Too

Island Kids reports on two upcoming October free programs for Roosevelt Island Middle & High School students. According to Island Kids:

FREE OF CHARGE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS

BEAT Global BEAT Explorers Program

Beat Explorers includes elements such as lyricism and creative writing, with an emphasis on music production, beat making, and career development. The Beat Explorers program engages students in all aspects of what it means to be a Music Producer: devotion, professionalism, hard work, creativity, and a fundamental knowledge of both production hardware and the latest technology. While a Beat Rhymers class tends to culminate in a final performance, Beat Explorers students focus on writing and recording professional-quality songs with original beats, lyrics, and music. This program is designed for Middle and High School students from 6-9th grade.

BEAT Global will be holding a showcase 4:30 PM Wednesday, October 4th at 536 Main Street to highlight the skills of the instructors and tell kids more about the program.

Allergic to Salad Culinary Program: Starts Friday, October 13th

Island Kids is excited to introduce Allergic to Salad Culinary Program to Roosevelt Island. Allergic to Salad introduce children to fun, hands-on, from-scratch STEM-based culinary classes. Together we'll hone our culinary skills by learning how to use a variety of tools (knife, grater, peeler, etc), discuss kitchen and food safety, explore new and exciting foods, cultures, recipes and come together to expand our tastes by enjoying unique dishes. Our classes create a platform for a lifetime of adventurous eating and purposeful life-skills. This class is middle school students in 6-8th grade.

Italian Heritage, Culture & Cuisine Celebrated With Authentic Pizza Making Demo At Roosevelt Island PS/IS 217 Courtesy Of RIRA Youth Initiative And San Mateo Pizza & Espresso Bar

Italian heritage, culture and cuisine were on display last night at Roosevelt Island's PS/IS 217 cafeteria courtesy of the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Social, Cultural & Educational Committee (SC&E) together with the owner and chef of San Mateo Pizza & Espresso Bar.

RIRA's Adib Mansour reports
Brothers Fabio and Ciro Casella entered the restaurant industry at a young age, working at the restaurant their mother owned in Italy. More recently, they had a hand in developing the Italian cheese programs at Dean and Deluca and Grace’s Marketplace. Ciro built San Matteo’s pizza oven himself. From the Anima e Trucco to the Regina Margherita, the pizza at San Matteo are blistered, pliable and chewy in the traditions imported from the area around Salerno. San Matteo Pizza and Espresso Bar is located on 2nd Avenue and 90th Street.

At the Roosevelt Island PS/IS 217 Italian Pizza cooking demonstration last evening, chef Ciro Casella brought his own wood oven

to the school and spoke with Middle Schoolers about the Italian culture, its cuisine, and taught the students

how to make authentic Pizza using his special Southern Italian recipe.

Working with RIRA, Fabio Vanorio, the Executive Director - Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy- and Chef Ciro Casella, this event is intended to bring Middle Schoolers together with their parents to this special occasion (Chef Ciro donated his time and all the cost including dough, ingredients, water from Italy, napkins, plates, etc.).

This event is part of RIRA’s Youth Initiative, who’s objective is to expose the youths of the Island to different cultures as well as widening their outlook for future job opportunities.
Here's Mr. Mansour explaining RIRA's Youth Initiative to bring Italian culture and heritage to Roosevelt Island PS/IS 217 students with the Pizza Making demonstration and RIRA's SC&E Committee Chair Lynn Strong Shinozaki describing goal to educate residents about different cultures and to connect with each other.
