Visit Roosevelt Island With Awesome 360 Degree Panoramic View From Google Maps - Pretty Neat!

Roosevelt Island's Southpoint and Lighthouse Park are not among the finalist's from last month's online poll seeking places for Google's Street View Trike to visit but New York's Central Park and Bronx Zoo made the final cut.

No need for Roosevelt Island residents to despair and feel our perpetual annoyance at being ignored or slighted by the outside world because Google Maps has taken some great 360 degree panoramic images of our little Island.

Starting at the Roosevelt Island Tram Station

and continuing through Southtown's Riverwalk development with the East River and Manhattan Skyline in view

It's too bad though that Southpoint and Lighthouse Park did not get the Google Map View but here's a great panoramic view from Southpoint Park and another from Lighthouse Park. Better enjoy the waterfront views from Southpoint Park now because they may soon be gone forever if the proposed Kahn/FDR Memorial Boondoggle ever gets built. Let's hope this project never gets started!

Tethered 3D Balloon Camera Helps Visualize Views for Pre-Construction Condo Buyers-Spectacular NY Harbor Views

Views are an important factor when considering purchasing a new condo unit. For a buyer of an existing building it is very easy to determine whether the view from a particular apartment is acceptable or not although there is always the risk that a new building will eventually be built that obstructs the current view.

However, for buyers of condo units in a pre-construction or during the construction phase of a new development, there is great difficulty in visualizing what the views will actually look like from their apartments when completed. A new service from Digital Design and and Imaging Service is being offered that will help buyers picture these views prior to moving into their new apartment.

According to an article in the NY Times:
...potential buyers involved at the conception of a project often relish the chance to compare the master-bedroom views from, say, Apartments 11-W and 11-E. Similarly, he added, the photos are useful to architects in figuring out where to place windows, or whether to avoid them at certain spots because the views might not be terrific. They also give developers a way to fine-tune unit prices, which may be higher if the apartment has a glimpse of the Empire State Building, or lower if the views are not as good.

...A recent client was 15 Central Park West, a 43-story luxury condo from Zeckendorf Development at West 61st Street. The building’s 199 units found buyers in 18 months and are now about 10 percent closed, said Richard Wallgren, the sales director.

The brisk sell-out was helped by careful pricing, which Digital Design’s photos aided, he said.

“They were a marvelous tool to guide the developer,” Mr. Wallgren said.

Aerial photos also helped the Extell Development Company determine the size and placement of windows at the Rushmore, a 43-story condo under construction at 80 Riverside Boulevard, according to Raizy Haas, a senior vice president. The windows were positioned to maximize water views, she said.
The bottom line according the the article is
:... “With new construction, it can be hard to visualize views,” she said. “And if you already have this aerial photography, then why not show it?”

Take a look at the view from proposed Observation Deck for the new World Trade Center site using Digital Design's tethered 360 degree balloon cameras to reach 1400 feet above Ground Zero. Spectacular and awesome aerial photos simply do not even begin to describe the view of lower Manhattan and New York Harbor from this panoramic image.

The works of the photographer, Joergen Geerds, will be part of a gallery show titled "Points of View" to be held at the Tabla Rasa Gallery in Brooklyn. More details here.

Joergen explains that to capture these panoramic images he uses a Canon XT1.
This setup gives me the same pixel amount as my graflex setup, but with less trouble with scanning&retouching. Exposure bracketing/blending gives me super rich dynamic range with 3 rows of 12 images usually and I think the results are now exactly where I wanted them to be.
Good job! Go see his show.

Awesome Panoramic View of East River, Manhattan/Queens/Brooklyn Skyline from Southpoint Park that will be Ruined by Proposed Louis Kahn/FDR Memorial

A reader of the post, I'll Take Manhattan-From Roosevelt Island, sends in this fantastic panoramic photo that he took from Southpoint Park on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island. Click on this link to fully view incredible panoramic image taken from Southpoint Park of the East River, Long Island City/Williamsburg waterfront, Williamsburg Bridge, United Nations as well as the Lower East Side and Midtown Manhattan skyline. You can also see the Long Island City developments projects from Avalon Bay and Rockrose as well North Side Piers, the Toll Brothers Williamsburg waterfront condo development project.

It is important to note that if the proposed Louis Kahn/FDR Memorial (pictured below) is allowed to be built at Southpoint Park, unobstructed East River waterfront views from Southpoint Park like those shown above will forever be blocked. Compare these two images. If you live on Roosevelt Island or just visit and walk down to Southpoint Park, what would you rather see - clear open unobstructed views of the East River and New York City Skyline or the Louis Kahn/FDR memorial?

Image of Louis Kahn/FDR memorial is from Architectural Record.

UPDATE 11/20: More fantastic panoramic photos from Roosevelt Island's Southpoint Park here - This time nighttime views of midtown Manhattan and the Encampment public art project.
