Robbery of Delivery Person In Roosevelt Landings - Roosevelt Island Plain Clothes Public Safety Officers On The Look Out

The 9/21 24 Hour Public Safety Report indicated that there had been a robbery committed in a Roosevelt Island building.

Robbery- Victim was robbed in building, search was made of subjects with negative results. NYPD responded.

I inquired of Roosevelt Island Public Safety Director Keith Guerra for additional information and he replied:

A Delivery-man was robbed in Building 560. No injuries were sustained.
Plainclothes Officers have been detailed inside the buildings to help prevent this from occurring again.

This is not the first time that a Roosevelt Island delivery person has been robbed.

Plain Clothes undercover officers have previously been utilized at the Motorgate Garage and acts of vandalism have seemed to decrease there. Hopefully, the same result will occur with robberies of Roosevelt Island delivery people and anyone else as well.

Does the Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department have their own version of Muggable Ron? Bad guys better watch out - you never know who may be an undercover police officer.

In response to this post on recent broken car window incidents at the Roosevelt Island Motorgate Parking Garage, several readers have asked for increased security:

Can anyone say ... security cameras

and:

some of us pay up to $165 a month to keep our cars there!!! There are no working cameras to my knowledge, and granted PSD does a great job keeping it safe there, and this past window breaking ordeal is terrible, but why can't the motorgate hire a security guard to drive around there as well???????

RIOC Public Safety Department Director Keith Guerra replies:

There are working cameras in the Motorgate, but it's an old system.
Our Engineering Department is attempting to improve the lighting in the
Motorgate. This should help. We are also trying to see if we can
upgrade the system to assist with the vandalism dilemma. I believe this
will help, but cameras are not a "cure-all" as sometimes the images are
not fully clear. It's unfortunate that vandals, with nothing better to
do, damage the property of others. Please advise your readers that we
have officers from our Plain Clothes Unit consistently patrolling the
Motorgate.

Perhaps this product might help improve lighting at the Motorgate Parking Garage.

TRESPASSING
8/22/7 roof 580 Main St. ARREST Officers responded to scene, saw two men on roof top with binoculars and arrested and escorted them to PSD. Sgt. faxed heir ID to “Counter Terrorist Unit.” They had no previous incidents. They were each issued a “C” summons.

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF
8/4/7 apt. 560 Main St. ARREST Female in-house, with her boyfriend, whom she said had entered her apt. through patio when she was absent and did damage to her apt; and threatened to “kill her rabbit”!

HARASSMENT
8/7/7 bus #1 300 Main St. Female notified bus driver that an anonymous male had sat next to her on the bus and was putting his hand on her thigh, lifting her dress; and that she pushed it away. Male exited the bus and walked north-bound towards subway. Officers responded, spoke to bus driver with negative results. The perp. is not known to victim. NYPD was notified, responded, prepared report. Search of area negative.

Roosevelt Island Public Safety Report, January 2007-May 2007

Above is the Roosevelt Island Public Safety Report for the months of January-May 2007. The top chart lists what are called "incidents" by type, such as criminal mischief, harassment, graffiti etc., the middle chart lists those "incidents" by building location, Eastwood, Motorgate, Westview etc., and the bottom chart lists "incidents" by post location, Main Street, Seawall Walkway, Manhattan Park complex etc.

The report indicates that these statistics represent only those incidents reported. I do not know if that means reported to RIOC HQ, Public Safety, the NYPD or some combination. How do these numbers correlate with the general impression by residents of crime and public safety on Roosevelt Island?

Harbor Police Activity by Subway Pier

There was a great deal of Harbor Police, Fire and Helicopter patrol activity in and above the East River this morning near the subway pier. Sadly, the reason for this was that a body was found in the water. The NYPD, NYFD, and EMS performed their duties with typical professionalism.
