Roosevelt Island Gallery RIVAA Opens Pop Up Art Exhibit At Cornell Tech Tata Innovation Center - Abstract Painting By Local Artist Ioan Popoin Will Ignite The Minds And Spirits Of All Who Wander By Says RIVAA Gallery Board Member Jim Pignetti

Last Thursday, May 2, Roosevelt Island's Gallery RIVAA opened a new Pop Up art exhibit featuring abstract painting by local resident and artist Ioan Popoin, displayed in the first floor window  commercial space

and building lobby

of the Tata Innovation Center

on the Cornell Tech campus.

There are no hours to the exhibition. You can come by at any time during the day to view the painting thru the first floor window commercial space and in the lobby when the building is open. The paintings are on view for approximately 2 months.

RIVAA Board Member Jim Pignetti welcomed those who gathered for the opening and introduced the artist noting:
... It's an honor and privilege to partner with Cornell Tech in adding more beauty to an already fantastic campus. Ioan's extraordinary abstractions ignite an otherwise empty commercial space and hopefully they'll ignite the minds and spirits of all who wander by, Cornell Tech students and staff, community members and visitors....

I hope my constant pushing can now be understood through the lens of this event...

... Ioan, your work speaks for itself. Color, gesture, form, movement. They transport us visually and emotionally to a new and fresh place, something that we all need nowadays...

Mr Pignetti added:
It is with great pleasure that I present Ioan Popoiu’s paintings here at the Tata Innovation Center. This is another installment in RIVAA’s - the Roosevelt Island Visual Artists Association - Island of Art Initiative.

It’s an honor and privilege to partner with Cornell Tech in adding more beauty to an already fantastic campus. Ioan’s extraordinary abstractions ignite an otherwise empty commercial space… and hopefully they’ll ignite the minds and spirits of all who wander by, Cornell Tech students and staff, community members, and visitors.

There are several thank yous I’d like to share… gratitude goes to Dan Cooke, Joseph Cassissa, Juliet Wiessman, and Elysa Marden. We got to know one another thru the email correspondence required to make an event like this real. I hope my constant pushing can now be understood thru the lens of this moment. At RIVAA, thanks go to Laura Hussey and Margie Smith, who participated in meetings and provided counsel. And most importantly thank you Tad Sudol, our president, without his vision none of this would, or could happen.

Finally thank you Ioan for your wonderful paintings… Ioan’s work speaks for itself – color, gesture, form, movement – they transport us visually, and emotionally to a new and fresh place, something that we all need in these trying times…

Roosevelt Island Gallery RIVAA Pop Up Art Exhibition At Tata Innovation Center On Cornell Tech Campus - As The Footsteps Fall Paintings By Resident Ioan Popoiu Opening Reception Thursday May 2, You're Invited

Roosevelt Island's Gallery RIVAA will be hosting a pop up art gallery at the Tata Innvoation Center

in the first floor space on the Cornell Tech campus.

The first exhibition will feature the paintings of Roosevelt Island resident Ioan Popoiu with an opening reception tomorrow, Thursday, May 2 starting at 4 PM

According to Mr Popoiu:
... In my work I use the fluidity of the paint as a form of expression, which gives me the opportunity to explore freely and deeply into the universe of abstraction. I began working with fluids sometime in the 80’s, and I became more involved with it in the early 90’s. Even now it still captivates me. Every one of my works is an exploration of color and texture obtained by juxtaposition of many layers of paint and polymer. I like to develop my work by implementing the laws of nature. The shapes and forms in my paintings speak of my surroundings and they are related to the concepts of time and space. The structure and transparency obtained by overlapping multiple layers of color creates a 3-D effect creating a form of expression which is continuously changing.

In recent years I have used bright, fluorescent colors, perhaps as a response to a previous experience I had as a young artist in my native country, Romania. When I first visited the region of Maramures, I was fascinated by the powerful originality of its folk art. People there use very bright colors as a form of expression of their positive vision of life....
Gallery RIVAA, located at 527 Main Street, recently lost it's annex gallery space at the Octagon Building so having a second space, though temporary, is a positive for local Roosevelt Island artists.

Cornell Tech Campus Tata Innovation Center Start Up Culture Attracting Roosevelt Island Wildlife - Canadian Geese Knocking On Door

This afternoon in front of the Tata Innovation Center on the Roosevelt Island Cornell Tech campus, visiting Canadian Geese were taking a lunch break.

According to the Tata Innovation Center:
Overview

Startup culture is the lifeblood of Cornell Tech, where academia and industry collide. In a first-of-its-kind building, the Tata Innovation Center houses recent Cornell Tech students hustling to commercialize a new idea, start-ups on the verge of explosive growth, established companies developing leading-edge technologies and products, as well as academic teams conducting groundbreaking research. The Tata Innovation Center was developed in partnership with Forest City Ratner Companies.

Art

The Tata Innovation Center hosts art exhibitions as well as permanent installations, including the WPA-era abstract mural painted by artist Albert Swinden for the Goldwater Hospital, the building that was on the campus site from 1939-2014. Avant-garde when painted in 1942, the restored Swinden mural serves as an inspirational link to the innovations that modernism wrought...

Cornell Tech Partners With Technion For Robotics Workshop Yesterday At Roosevelt Island Campus Teaching NYC High School Students Reverse Engineering, 3D Printing, Internet Of Things & More

Professors from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology and their partners at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute and  Cornell Tech collaborated yesterday conducting two Robotics workshops for NYC high school students at the Tata Innovation Center on the Cornell Tech Roosevelt Island campus.

The first workshop was on Engineering and 3D Making.

According to the workshop sylabus:
Students will dissect a small machine, analyze how the parts function, then design and 3D print their improved solutions. Students will learn the principals of design thru reverse engineering and develop skills in project analysis, digital design and making.
The students, including several from Roosevelt Island, reversed engineered a computer fan component, redesigned it and 3D printed the new fan in the

Cornell Tech Makers Lab.

The second workshop

was learning about the internet of things by making a smart connected robot:
Students will create an app to control a robot using the internet of things platform ThingWork. The Cloud dashboard they produce will direct the robot to use sensors to weigh and sort objects. Students will learn Internet of Things concepts, smart connected products and robot communications.
Cornell Tech Director of K-12 Education Diane Levitt tweeted
Ms Levitt adds:

Earlier in the week, the Technion robotics instructors, led by Professor Igor Verner, held robotics workshops for NYC High School teachers as well.

The workshop was funded by the Jacobs Institute’s Julia and Joshua Ruch Faculty Exchange Grant.

The Jacobs Institute, Cornell Tech and Technion hope to do more such workshops in the future.
