HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA - JULY 4 IS INDEPENDENCE DAY.

As we all know, there's more to the Fourth of July holiday than fireworks, bbq, burgers, beer and flag waving. Not that there is anything wrong with that but...

What the Fourth of July is really about is the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. Here's how the signing of the Declaration of Independence was depicted in one of my favorite movies, 1776.



This previous post shows the text of the Declaration of Independence, a reading of it from then Senator John F. Kennedy and on a slightly less serious note, South Park's version of the decision by American colonists to declare independence and go to war against England.

The subject -  my objection, some might call it a rant, (all in CAPS because I didn't know any better) to RIOC charging $18 to gain entry to Southpoint park to view the fireworks when other NYC public venues did not charge a dime.

Over 1 Million Visits As Of Today - Roosevelt Islander Online Blog Statistics

As of today, Roosevelt Islander Online Blog reached 1 million total page loads since starting to measure visitor traffic in September 2007 (The first post was on July 4, 2007). According to Statcounter,  as of earlier today there have been 1,000,383 page loads  and 685,290 unique visitors since September 2007. Here are the yearly readership statistics to date from Statcounter.

Page loads represent the number of times a Roosevelt Islander page has been visited and unique visits represent particular visitors.

Below are the monthly statistics from September 2007 thru December 2011 averaging 18,688 total page loads and 12,798 unique visits.

During 2011 the average monthly page loads were 27,427 and average monthly unique visitors were 17,958. Average daily page loads for 2011 were 902 and average daily unique visitors were 590.

I am often asked how many visitors come to the Roosevelt Islander Blog. Here's the answer. According to Statcounter, for the last 12 months from April 2010 through March 2011 the average number of monthly visitors were 15.836 and page loads were 23,448.

Last week the Roosevelt Islander Blog exceeded more than half a million unique visitors since beginning on July 4, 2007 with a rant against RIOC for charging $18 to view the Fireworks celebration at Southpoint Park. According to Statcounter, since readership statistics started to be kept on September 11, 2007 there have been 501.044 unique visitors to this site thru March 31, 2011. Below are the monthly readership statistics for Roosevelt Islander Blog from September 2007 - March 2011.

The Roosevelt Islander Blog is fast approaching the end of it's second year, having started July 4, 2007 with a rant against RIOC charging $18 to view the Fireworks celebration at Southpoint Park. According to Statcounter, since readership statistics started to be kept on September 11, 2007 there have been 161,699 unique visitors to this site thru yesterday.

There will be no rant this year against RIOC's charging to view the Roosevelt Island July 4 Fireworks Celebration at Southpoint Park since the event has been canceled due to the City's decision to move the celebration from the East River to the Hudson River in honor of the 400th Anniversary of Henry Hudson's sail.

Some time last week the Roosevelt Islander blog, which started on July 4, 2007, was read by it's one hundred thousandth visitor (100,000) since viewer statistics started being kept in September 2007. Since then, there have been 101,321 visitors to the blog.

End of Roosevelt Islander's First Year, Beginning of Second - Thanks to Everyone For Contributing!

Roosevelt Islander Monthly readership statistics mid-September 2007 - June 2008 from Statcounter

The Roosevelt Islander Blog is starting it's second year of existence this week having begun on July 4, 2007. Hard to believe it has been a full year of blogging. I want to thank everybody in the community of Roosevelt Islanders from all over the world who have contributed their thoughts, ideas, comments, suggestions and links. They are all greatly appreciated. Please continue to do so because much of the information and ideas for posts come from you.

I also want to thank RIOC President Steve Shane who, though we may disagree on some particular issues facing Roosevelt Island, has always been available to answer questions and provide comments on issues of concern to the people who live on Roosevelt Island. Assemblymember Kellner and State Senator Serrano, together with their staffs, have also contributed to the blog and I am grateful for their participation. Dick Lutz and the Main Street WIRE have been a great resource for current news about Roosevelt Island as well as a fantastic historical archive. Fellow blogger Roosevelt Island 360 has provided much assistance as well as interesting posts to link to. The Common Council members of the Roosevelt Island Residents Association have also been of great help. Most of all, I want to thank Barbara for indulging me while I rant and rave over one thing or another. Without her, none of this would be possible or worthwhile.

Here is the first post. This all started because I thought it was not right to charge admission to view the July 4 fireworks at Southpoint Park. At that time, and for quite a bit thereafter, all POSTS WERE IN CAPITAL LETTERS. NYC's leading neighborhood and real estate blog Curbed thought the CAPS were a desperate cry for ... something :

All caps? GENIUS. We can think of no better way to draw the necessary attention to these critical issues. Bravo, sir. Also: we're sort of scared now.

It wasn't genius - but probably was a desperate cry.

To summarize the year with statistics, there have been a total of 593 posts. Since beginning to keep readership statistics with Statcounter on September 10, 2007, through July 3 2008, the Roosevelt Islander blog had a total of 63,031 unique visitors or an average of 212 per day. The chart above represents the monthly readership statistics beginning in Mid-September 2007 - June 2008. June 2008 had the largest monthly readership of 8,368.

Finally, I received this very nice comment yesterday from Bill, a potential new Roosevelt Island resident, which makes me feel that continuing the blog is of some value:

Thank you so much for creating this Roosevelt Island blog. You are really helping me in finding out things that will influence my decision on whether or not to become a Roosevelt Islander.

Changes at Roosevelt Islander and Some Readership Statistics

Regular readers may have noticed some changes to the look of the Roosevelt Islander blog. I hope these changes make it a little bit easier to read, navigate and search through the blog. This is still a work in progress so please bare with me here as I try to upgrade Roosevelt Islander with more services, information and features over the coming months.

I find it amazing that what started out eight months ago with an all CAPITAL letter post of one Roosevelt Island resident's complaint concerning the RIOC policy of charging $18 to view the July 4 fireworks celebration at Southpoint Park has grown from a once in a while post to over 435 posts. Also, what I thought would be of interest to maybe a few family and friends has climbed to almost 35,000 unique Roosevelt Islander visitors, an average of approximately 185 daily, since statistics started to be kept in mid September.
