Trader Joe's Bridgemarket 59th Street Store Opens Yesterday To Large Crowd Of Very Happy Customers, Only 1 Block From The Roosevelt Island Tram - Take A Tour And Meet Store Manager Captain Brian Who Loves Roosevelt Island

Grocery shopping for Roosevelt Island residents just got a whole lot better.

The NYC 59th Street Bridgemarket Trader Joe's under the Queensboro Bridge and only one block from the Roosevelt Island Tram

opened yesterday morning

to an expected large crowd of very happy Roosevelt Island and Upper East side customers.

The lines were long but very orderly and manageable, not a long wait at all.

I spoke with Trader Joe's Captain Brian yesterday who tell us about the new store and says about Roosevelt Island:

... I'm very familiar with it.  It's one of my favorite places in New York. I think it's a beautiful place. I love visiting there and I've been there a couple times since I've been working out of the store so love it....

... the Tram goes almost directly over the store so it seemed logical to pay a little homage to the Tram being right next to us...

A very happy Trader Joe's customer Kelsey Fowler gives a great first hand account of the Trader Joe's 59th Street Grand Opening and tour of the store. Watch and enjoy her happiness and excitement.

The store is open daily from 8 am to 9 PM.

As one Roosevelt Island resident commented:

This is the best thing ever!!! Now all I need is an outdoor volleyball court on the island and all my dreams will have come true

If only they delivered.

Roosevelt Island and Upper East Side NYC Council Member Ben Kallos adds:

Just as I got elected, A&P went bankrupt and we lost our flagship Food Emporium.

We spent the past 8 years working with EDC and multiple owners who cycled through the space. We reached out to every supermarket in America to get this largest of empty storefronts filled. We even tried creative ideas like pop up markets. After years of working to fill the space, I couldn't be prouder that the Trader Joe's everyone's been asking for is open.

I promise I didn't put in all this work just for the Thai Lime & Chili Cashews. :

Trader Joe's Opening 59th Street Queensboro Bridge Store At End Of 2021 Only 1 Block From Roosevelt Island Tram Says NYC Council Member Ben Kallos

Roosevelt Island residents have been asking when the new Trader Joe's planned for the Bridgemarket space underneath the Queensboro Bridge on 59th Street only one block from the Roosevelt Island Tram would open? Last month I asked Roosevelt Island NYC Council Member Ben Kallos:

I was wondering if you knew anything about status of plans for new Trader Joe’s under Queensboro Bridge?

A lot of Roosevelt island residents have been asking me about it?

I spoke to Mr. Kallos today who said the Trader Joe's lease for the space is signed and Trader Joe's plans to open by the end of next year, 2021.

Mr Kallos reported that the Bridgemarket space has been empty since 2015 after the former occupant, Food Emporium supermarket, closed and he has been working since that time with community groups and the Empire State Development Corp to find a new tenant for the landmarked space. Potential tenants included Whole Foods, Fairway Supermarket and a public food hall similar to the Chelsea Market. But, according to Mr Kallos, the clear community favorite for the Bridgemarket space was Trader Joe's.

Mr Kallos added that Roosevelt Island residents will soon be able to grocery shop at Trader Joe's by the Tram, as well as at our neighborhood Foodtown supermarket and Costco in Long Island City.

Below are Trader Joe's Bridgemarket renderings from a February 26, 2020 presentation to the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission

Long Time Roosevelt Island Residents Give Very Favorable Reviews To New Foodtown Supermarket - Many Shopping At RI Supermarket For First Time In Years, It's Becoming A Community Gathering Spot

What do you think of the new Roosevelt Island Foodtown Supermarket,

located in the former Gristedes space, that had it Grand Opening on February 7?

So far, every person I've spoken to has had very positive reviews about our new Foodtown Supermarket.

For example,  a 30 year Roosevelt Island resident told me she would never visit the old Gristedes store and would drive off Roosevelt Island to do all her grocery shopping but after visiting the new Foodtown supermarket is:
... grateful that the store has opened up because now I can stay here and enjoy shopping on the Island....  People want to be able to shop and afford to have good food. To be able to work their budget out and include nice food. It's a great start...
A 47 year resident said the recent Foodtown Grand Opening was like a neighborhood:
...reunion seeing so many faces you have not seen in a long time...

Another resident says the new Foodtown Supermarket Cafe is becoming a community gathering spot -  and likes the good cup of coffee for $1.50.

Roosevelt Island Gristedes Supermarket To Be Rebranded As Foodtown Supermarket, Transition To Be Completed By February 2020 - End Of An Era, Gristedes Signage Removed From Motorgate

The Roosevelt Island Gristedes supermarket will soon complete it's transition and rebranding to a Foodtown.

Last Sunday,  the Gristedes signage was removed

and yesterday was completely gone.

I'm told that the transition to Foodtown

will be completed by February

and include a lower pricing structure for items.

According to this September 18 Real Estate Weekly article:
... As part of that effort to stay ahead of the competition, Catsimatidis revealed he is switching some of his Gristedes stores to the D’Agostino brand — and vice versa.

In addition, the company may decide to open more Foodtown supermarkets, a brand Catsimatidis doesn’t own but does license in suburban areas....

... Catsimatidis said, “It’s getting tougher and tougher to do business and the community should support their local supermarkets, because if there’s no supermarkets at all, it’ll get much worse.”
Stay tuned for more info on the Roosevelt Island Foodtown Supermarket coming soon.

Roosevelt Island Gristedes Supermarket Customer Asks What's Going On With Changes At Store - Changing Suppliers Focusing On Well Priced Items, Quality Groceries, Fresh, Natural, Organic Perishables & Customer Centric Says Exec

A long time Roosevelt Island Gristedes supermarket customer

shares this email sent last week:
Our Gristedes -- What's Going On?

First, our beloved Luis is transferred to a store in Manhattan. Our very good second-in-command, Tim is, thankfully, still here. The new manager, Angel, seems aloof at best.

The long-time staff is doing the best they can I guess.

While the store is clean, there is much to be concerned about. Today, there was a young man doing a serious repair of one of the refrigerator cases in the back of the store.

A new VP, we are told, is now in charge of supplying the store & there are new suppliers who frequently cannot get their merchandise here in a timely manner. It's almost impossible to buy a variety of brands & products & "pantry staples" here without weeks of asking & waiting.

Most Shop-Rite brands have now disappeared or are down to a precious few. They were mostly, but not always cheaper, than the new brands that seem to be replacing them.

I am worried that for those of us who do not shop on line, use Fresh Direct or Peapod, and are on fixed incomes & budgets, that we are screwed.
I asked Gristedes owner John Catsimatidis to respond to the Roosevelt Island customer's concerns. Gristedes Executive Renee Flores replied:
First and foremost, please know that the Catsimatidis family and I share a vision whereas our customers and the communities in which we serve are our number one priority.

Yes, we are in the process of changing suppliers and unfortunately as part of that process, some items will be discontinued, but many comparable, outstanding well priced items will be added in their place. As we say goodbye to the Shoprite private label we will say hello to the Greenway and Best Yet private labels. We believe that these two private labels will add to and enhance the organic and specialty offerings our Roosevelt Island Customers have been asking for.

We do ask for a little patience over the next few weeks while the transition takes shape.

Our goal is to emerge from this transition as a shopping destination for all Roosevelt Island residents with a focus on exceptional quality groceries, fresh, natural and organic perishables and the customer centric experience our Roosevelt Island Customers deserve and expect.
Here's my interview with Mr. Catsimatidis

at the March 2013 re-opening following renovation of the store.

Fresh Food For Seniors Program Expanding To Roosevelt Island Announces Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer - Starts October 12 To Order

According to Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer's Office:
In 2012, Borough President Brewer partnered with GrowNYC, the Department for the Aging, and more than a dozen senior centers to deliver fresh, locally-grown fruit and vegetables for just $8 a bag. This year, the Fresh Food for Seniors program has expanded to include neighborhoods stretching from the West Village to Northern Manhattan!

Seniors pay $8 for a bag containing five-to-six varieties of fresh fruit and vegetables – a retail value of $18 to $20. Orders are pay-as-you-go, one week ahead of each delivery date. Fresh Food for Seniors allows seniors to sign up for just one order at a time so that they can decide how much food they need, when they need it....
During August 5 Roosevelt Island Town Hall Meeting with NYC Public Advocate Letitia James, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer reported on the Fresh Food For Seniors Program.

At the time of the August 5 Town Hall Meeting, the Fresh Food For Seniors Program was not available for Roosevelt Island but Ms. Brewer encouraged residents to ask for it.

At the conclusion of the Town Hall meeting, Roosevelt Island Seniors Association VP Wendy Hersh requested that Roosevelt Island be included in the Fresh Food For Seniors program.

During September 9 Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Common Council Public Session, Ron Davidson described the Fresh Food For Seniors Program and explained that the program was not yet available on Roosevelt Island but he accessed the program through NYC Council Member Corey Johnson's office.

Well, here's some good news.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer's office announced yesterday, September 23:
Today, Borough President Gale A. Brewer announced her office’s Fresh Food for Seniors program is expanding to cover Roosevelt Island. The program currently makes pre-packed bags of fresh, locally-sourced produce available to seniors every two weeks in the West Village, Chelsea, Clinton, the Upper West Side, Upper Yorkville, East Harlem, and northern Manhattan for just $8 per bag on a pay-as-you-go basis.

“It’s amazing what we’ve been able to do with this program in just three short years,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, who started the Fresh Food for Seniors program on the Upper West Side in 2012, when she served as that neighborhood’s Council Member. “For just $8 a bag, this program pays for itself while delivering healthy, fresh produce to seniors right in their neighborhoods at a tremendous value.”

The Roosevelt Island Senior Association will partner with the Borough President’s office, collecting and distributing orders at the Roosevelt Island Senior Center, located at 546 Main Street. The Fall 2015 order and pickup dates for the new Roosevelt Island program are as follows:

Place orders Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 12-13, 1pm-3pm

Pick-up Wednesday, Oct. 21, 3pm-6pm

Place orders Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 26-27, 1pm-3pm

Pick-up Wednesday, Nov. 4, 3pm-6pm

Place orders Monday-Tuesday, Nov. 9-10, 1pm-3pm

Pick-up Wednesday, Nov. 18, 3pm-6pm

The produce for the Roosevelt Island program will be purchased through Greenmarket Co., the wholesale division of GrowNYC, and will be packed by volunteers at the Fulton Senior Center in Chelsea, before being transported to the Roosevelt Island Senior Center.

Our office is currently located on Roosevelt Island. We started our first business here. We would like to be as close as possible to our customers to find out their grocery shopping problems and solve these problems. We are an independent small business company. Our company was founded on Roosevelt Island (June 1, 2014). Our website went online on Dec 18, 2014.

We are starting our service here on Roosevelt Island. We chose Roosevelt Island because we see adult residents are busy with their work and college students get back home late from school. We try to provide our services to save their valuable time.  Also, we see senior residents carry heavy grocery goods from supermarkets. We want to help and make their live more convenient.

More importantly, our good service does not mean high price. We guarantee most of our product prices are the lowest on the island. The only fee we charge is the $5 for flat rate same-day/over-night delivery. The good news is we provide free delivery from Dec 18 to Dec 23.

We are going to deliver goods from different supermarkets in the future. Currently we only deliver from Costco because food sources from Costco are fresh and cheap.
More information available at Road Runner Xpress.

UPDATE 12/21 - Road Runner Xpress adds that in addition to the $5 delivery charge, they charge slightly more for products than Costco.

Roosevelt Island's New Organic Grocer Wholesome Factory May Not Be So Wholesome Anymore, Residents Report Mold On Sandwich And Food Past Best Sell Date On Shelves - Hope This Is Not Return Of The Roosevelt Island Rule

Image of Roosevelt Island Wholesome Factory Main Street Storefront At Night

Roosevelt Island resident Stuart commenting on the What's On Your Roosevelt Island Mind post reported:
CONSUMER ALERT! As much as we enjoy the presence of Wholesome Factory on RI, be warned that many of the products they sell are past the "best by" date. Check all diary products you purchase.
which drew this response in agreement from Heather, a disappointed resident and ex-customer
My husband bought a sandwich (one of the ones pre-wrapped in cellophane) from Wholsome Factory and it had fungus on it! Disappointing-- we were excited to have a new deli/grocery store, but we definitely aren't buying there anymore. I'm attaching pics.

a reply from Stuart:
Thanks for your post. A day after I saw the outdated dairy products (I did alert the cashier, who thanked me and said she'd have them removed) I went in to check and they were still there! I then spot checked some of the cans and jars on the shelves and several of them were also outdated. I want to support them (even if they're a bit expensive) but will check everything carefully. And I will not purchase anything from the deli counter after seeing your photo. Thanks.
and a suggestion from Cheshire Kitty to:
Definitely call 311 and report the unsafe food purchase. Get a tracking number for your complaint and follow up - demand to have a food inspector visit the premises. They will shut them down if necessary. It may take a few minutes to file the complaint, but it is worth it as a service to fellow consumers. Just have all the information available - which you can get from the receipt, address & phone number of the store, time and day of purchase of the sandwich. Probably the photos can be relayed to the Board of Health/whatever regulatory agency will handle your complaint as well.

Thanks for alerting us to the unsafe conditions at Wholesome Factory.
Westviewer adds yesterday:
I was happy to see D'Artagnan chicken at Wholesome Factory and bought a pack of chicken thighs yesterday, with a use by date of March 5. One bite and we had to throw out the rest. Somehow it's not surprising; the more things change, the more they stay the same. The Roosevelt Island rule still applies: chances are that whatever we have here is the worst of its kind.

On a positive note, Gristede's was selling Plugra butter for $2.99 a half pound, similar in price to other stores. On the other hand, even though in honor of St. Patrick's Day Kerrygold butter was $3.99 (Trader Joe sells it for $3.19) it was still on the shelf next to cheese, where it will pick up cheesy flavors, and not with the other butters.

I can't understand why Gristede's management doesn't understand that if their prices were better (i.e., comparable to other stores) they would SELL more and MAKE MORE MONEY from their R.I. location, especially considering the sweetheart rent.
I was surprised to hear these reports about Wholesome Factory. I don't shop there often but have had their pizza and counter sandwiches which I found to be very good.

What do you think?

UPDATE 3/18 - Stuart reports:
Update on the Wholesome Factory: I checked out the store the other day and observed that they had removed almost 50% of the meats and cheeses from the front display, and the dairy products were now in date. I can't report on the sandwiches (mold-wise) as I didn't have any. However, it is encouraging to see they read this blog! :)

Roosevelt Island New Main Street Organic Grocer About To Open - Wholesome Direct Grand Opening On Monday May 13, Soft Opening Tomorrow

Hold on to your hats for this news. Another new retail store will open for business next week on Roosevelt Island's Main Street.

Reported over a year ago that Wholesome Direct, a gourmet and organic natural food market, signed a lease with Roosevelt Island Master Retail Leaseholder Hudson Related for the empty storefront at 530 Main St next to the Public Library. Learned today that the Grand Opening for Wholesome Direct will be on Monday May 13.

this afternoon with final preparations

for Monday's Grand Opening of Roosevelt Island's new organic grocer.

Mr. Nasser told me that Wholesome Direct will be open tomorrow for a "soft opening" in order to make sure everything is in order and right for serving the Roosevelt Island public.

Roosevelt Island Gristedes Supermarket Transformed, It's Beautiful Says Long Time Resident - Owner John Catsimatidis Kept His Promise For Gristedes Improvements And Much More

Roosevelt Island Gristedes Grand Re-Opening

The long awaited transformation of the much maligned Roosevelt Island Gristedes is finally completed and this week is the Grand Re-Opening of our local supermarket. Have you been in Gristedes recently - what do you think?

On Tuesday, I asked a long time Roosevelt Island resident, 39 years, what she thought of the new Gristedes and she said:
... it was beautiful. Roosevelt Island should be proud of this store...

Almost one year ago today, Gristedes owner John Catsimatidis spent several hours speaking with Roosevelt Island residents at a Town Hall meeting (video of meeting is here) and promised:
... improvements to be made at Roosevelt Island's Gristedes include offering more fresh produce and organic products at affordable prices....
During the March 12 Town Hall meeting, Mr. Catsimatidis heard:
... complaints expressed to Mr. Catsimatidis included expired products on shelves, dirty floors, inadequate product offerings, counter conveyor belts not working, long lines at checkout counter, lack of a full service pharmacy, leaking roof, poor lighting among others....
and Mr. Catimatidis resolved:
... to fix the problems described and urged any resident to contact him with specific complaints which will be addressed. He also asked for suggestions as to how to improve the store. I thought a great idea was suggested by resident Deborah Beck who recommended that the new store design include moving the store entrance from the dark tunnel like side entrance to better lit Main Street directly across from Manhattan Park....
Now that the Roosevelt Island Gristedes renovation is complete - how did Mr. Catsimatidis and his colleagues do? Commenting earlier this week, one resident said:
I really dig the new Gristedes. I also see an "upgrade" in staff. It was a very pleasant experience yesterday. The renovations are not quite done, though. The exit door is still being worked on.
another reported yesterday:
There's a party going on! Lots of free samples, some of which are good! The store is well-stocked and looks nice. Many of the items are lower in price than they were in the past -- sometimes down to normal. I hope they keep it up.
Free Samples At Roosevelt Island Grand Opening Preview Yesterday

though one skeptic expressed concern that improvements might not continue:
when they became a superstore a few years ago . the first few weeks the prices were low just to get people in as they were trying to fool everyone but then after a few weeks it was back to the same high prices so i am sure this will be the same .long live the shoppers bus.
I've been there the last couple of days and I think the Gristedes folks did a FANTASTIC JOB. Gristedes even listened to resident Deborah Beck's suggestion made at the Town Hall meeting and moved the store entrance to the better lit side of Main Street.

I spoke with Mr. Catsimatidis at yesterday's Grand Opening. He promised that:
...the quality will be there ...we guarantee everything...  I answer every email. If you have any complaints let me know...
About Gristedes pricing, a Gristedes representative said:
... you're not going to see we open up with real hot prices and all of a sudden we raise prices...  what the market bears we're going to give you the price when we can make a deal we're going to pass it on to you... we're trying to give you a fair but better quality package...
Main Street Retail Master Leaseholder David Kramer from Hudson Related attended yesterday's Gristedes Grand Opening Celebration as well. I asked Mr. Kramer what he thought of the Gristedes renovation and he said:
It's Big...  Gristedes is the anchor to Main Street... I think it is a great big step for Gristedes and great big step for Main Street retail... Gristedes becoming a more successful anchor is going to have a multiplier effect for the rest of the corridor.
 Mr. Kramer added:
...Trellis is starting renovation sometime this calendar year.... two more stores are about to open... three or four in the pipeline...
Here's the full interview with Mr. Catsimatidis and Mr. Kramer

and reactions from Roosevelt Island residents as well as Gristedes meatball vendor Mama Mancini's.
