The NYC Sanitation Department announced today:

Today, Mayor Eric Adams, the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), and the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) announced that the filing period for the next Sanitation Worker exam will run from June 8 to June 28 and encouraged all interested in the opportunity to register.

It was one of the best decisions I ever made – it changed my life forever, and in these difficult times, it can do the same for so many of the women and men of our neighborhoods. Update 6/9 - According to a Sanitation Department spokesperson: 

... The current starting salary of a Sanitation Worker is $40,622 per year, and the current labor agreement provides for periodic increases to $83,465 following the completion of 5 1/2 years of service. In addition to the basic annual wages, Sanitation Workers may also earn differential payments based on their specific assignment, as well as overtime pay.

While many Sanitation Workers pick up trash and recycling, there are other functions carried out by the position, including operating mechanical brooms, cleaning open lots, removing CFC from appliances, as well as other functions around the Department. Additionally, all Workers help operate salt spreaders and plows during snow operations....

Roosevelt Island resident and Coler Hospital Auxiliary volunteer Judy Berdy reports:

A person is needed to work in the recently opened Coler Subway Sandwich and Gift shops that sells coffee and snacks. The shops needs staffing with persons familiar with restaurant/ sandwich work. 

Stop by Coler, 900 Main Street, weekdays 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or call 914 924 9024.
Ms Berdy adds that the Subway Sandwich Shop is very important to the Coler community and cannot open without sufficient staff. There is no employee cafeteria or cafe/restaurant for residents and their guests to eat other than the Subway shop in the Coler facility.

According to the Indeed job listing site, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) is seeking to fill the following positions.

It's unknown whether the job listings for Assistant Vice President of Communications and Communications Director means that the current remaining RIOC Communication Team, led by Erica Spencer-El, are being fired or shifted to another RIOC job.

UPDATE 3/3 - As of the end of January, Juan Tejada, shown in the video, was no longer part of the RIOC Communications team or employed by RIOC.

Tremendous Turnout Of Employers And Applicants For Roosevelt Island Job Fair Last Friday Says RISA VP Andrea Jackson, Interviews Set Up And Offers Anticipated

Last Friday, August 27, The Roosevelt Island Seniors Association (RISA) hosted a Job Fair at Good Shepherd Plaza featuring 14 businesses including:

RISA Vice President Andrea Jackson organized the Roosevelt Island Job Fair and said there was a tremendous turnout by employers and applicants.

Among the employers attending was Edie Burns, the Food & Beverage Director for Call Mom, the operator of Anything At All restaurant and Panorama Room rooftop cocktail bar in the Graduate Hotel. Ms Burns said she met several local residents who are amazing candidates at the job fair and set up interviews for them

The Roosevelt Island Seniors Association (RISA) is a hosting a job fair Friday August 27 at Good Shepherd Plaza featuring 14 businesses and companies in attendance including:

  • ShopRite among others
According to RISA Vice President Andrea Jackson:

RISA is hosting this JOB FAIR in an effort to help restore the integrity of the economic shortfalls of our Wonderful Community! The core messages that we are sending are community is revitalization, empowerment, unity and sustainability. We are excited to bring this venue to the community as the first ever JOB FAIR in the Roosevelt Island Community.

Our community although resilient in appearance, some have developed sedentary lifestyles as well as financial setbacks. Our mission is to provide employment for those that need additional funds to defray the cost associated with their loss of income and any additional domestic needs.

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp Seeking New Chief Operating Officer To Oversee RIOC Strategy And Business - Also, A Director Of Transportation For Red Bus, Motorpool And Related Facilities

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) is seeking a new Chief Operating Officer and Director of Transportation.

According to the Idealist job website:

VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS / CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER Roosevelt Island Operating Corporaton
SALARY RANGE: $175,000 - $190,000 

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the President/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) the Chief Operating Officer (COO) oversees all strategic and business operations for Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC). The COO is responsible for developing and executing the operational strategy in support with RIOC’s vision. The COO will oversee various departments as assigned by the President and CEO. This position complements the external-facing responsibilities of the President/CEO and works closing with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and the Vice President/General Counsel....

RIOC is searching for an experienced Transportation Director for its Bus Operations, Motorpool and other transportation related facilities or operations. Cy Opperman has been the very competent and professional RIOC Director of Transportation since 2011. If he is leaving RIOC, it is a big loss for the Roosevelt Island community.

As reported last week, the Roosevelt Island Graduate Hotel on the Cornell Campus will open June 1.

Meal Plan is the operator of the Graduate Hotel rooftop bar and ground floor restaurant. Although an  opening date for the bar and restaurant has not been announced yet, Meal Plan has begun hiring.

No Definite Date Yet For Opening Of Graduate Hotel On Roosevelt Island Cornell Tech Campus But Hiring Has Begun For Several Positions - Check Out The Job Listings

Medical Assistant Position Available At Soon To Open Roosevelt Island Covid 19 Testing Site Facility With Swift Emergency Care

 As previously reported, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) announced a Covid-19 Test site will open in the former Roosevelt Island NY Public Library space later this month. The Roosevelt Island Covid -19 Test Provider, Swift Emergency Care, listed a job available at the facility on the Indeed website.

Roosevelt Island Graduate Hotel On Cornell Tech Campus Seeking To Fill Sales Director Position - Plans To Open In First Quarter 2021 Subject To Coronavirus Pandemic Developments

located on the Roosevelt Island Cornell Tech campus planned to open last July but was delayed due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. A Graduate Hotel representative reported yesterday:

We continue to target a Quarter 1 for opening; developments with the Covid pandemic and restrictions will play a big factor in exactly when, but definitely no earlier than mid February.

Highgate Hotels will be the operator of The Graduate Hotel and they are currently seeking to fill the Director of Sales position. According to Highgate Hotel's:

... Overview 

The Director of Sales is primarily responsible for leading & driving top line revenue strategy for traditional sales related segments to include group, volume transient & catering. The individual is additionally responsible for staying ahead of market trends, market share movement and ongoing competitive hotel analysis, while directing the property sales teams (rooms & catering) to insure budgeted revenues are met or exceeded. The Director of Sales is also responsible for developing and implementing a marketing communications plan designed to achieve the desired positioning for the hotel, as well as managing the sales and marketing budget that supports revenue attainment....

And:

       Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Marketing 
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a sales leader, with prior hotel sales experience. 
  • Experience dealing with/communicating with ownership groups and asset management. 
  • Proficient in managing/using sales automation (DELPHI) & PMS systems.

Granny Annie's Bar & Kitchen Hiring Servers & Bartenders For New Roosevelt Island Restaurant Opening Soon With Outdoor Seating Only For Now Due To Covid 19

As reported September 23, 2019:

... Granny Annie's Bar & Kitchen will be taking over the premises formerly occupied by the Riverwalk Bar & Grill, empty since 2018 Labor Day.
The husband and wife ownership team had hoped to open this past spring but the opening was delayed due to the Covid 19 shutdown.

After 2 years with no Roosevelt Island bar, it looks like our new Roosevelt Irish Bar is close to opening.

What is SYEP Summer Bridge 2020?

As you may know in April, we had to suspend the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). We have spent this time creating an engaging virtual program that will offer opportunities to learn new skills, explore potential careers and earn money this summer and are happy to announce the launch of SYEP Summer Bridge 2020.

What Does the Program Offer?

SYEP Bridge will give youth a unique opportunity to explore their interest and discover new ones through:
  • Career Exploration: Flex your research skills and discover new career possibilities.
  • Skill-Building Activities: Receive help with your resume, cover letters, and interview skills. Learn essential job readiness skills and workplace etiquette.
  • Connections to Professionals: Build your network through mentoring, career panels, social media workshops, and more.
  • Community Building: Our democracy needs your voice. Learn valuable skills to become an active citizen at work and in your community.
  • Earn Money: Get paid to participate! Youth between the ages of 14-15 and 16-24 will receive stipend of $700 and $1,000 respectively for their participation.
Who is Eligible?
  • Young people age 14 to 21 may apply online
