Is Roosevelt Island becoming a popular spot for fashion shoots and models? Earlier this year, scenes from America's Next Top Model were shot on Roosevelt Island and on the tram with Nigel Barker.

UPDATE 3:10 PM - The NY Post has an article today about a Craigslist fashion model scam using Project Runway designer Christian Siriano's name. From the NY Post:

...Fake ads on the online classified ad service are using the "Project Runway" winner's name to recruit models -- and the designer is striking back.

Starting last February, Siriano's clothing company began receiving inquiries from modeling hopefuls that had come across the Craigslist ads, the Web site Fashionista reported...

... "There seem to be two [scams] going on. The first wanted models of a specific type and gave an address of where to go," Bianconi said. "We were concerned for safety, that's why Christian said in his Twitter 'be careful' . . . The second one seems to be money-based."...

I have no idea whether the Craigslist ad seeking a model for fashion work on Roosevelt Island is legitimate or a scam like the one described by the Post. So be advised and be careful!

Working On Roosevelt Island Tram Towers, Cables & Cabins Removed, Tower Tops & Hanger Arm Installed Next - Will Americas Next Top Models Be Back Soon?

Did you notice the construction crane and increased activity near the Roosevelt Island Tram Tower on the West Channel Road recently? That's because the Poma-Leitner construction crew brought in a crane

and started work assembling the new tower tops.

About the Tram Modernization Project, Roosevelt Island Operating Corp. (RIOC) President Steve Shane writes in his latest report to the community (Item 2 A):

After 6 weeks, the construction is proceeding on schedule. Cables and old cars are removed, demolition and removal of old machinery is almost complete. Tower tops are next. We are monitoring closely.

Assembling The Tram Tower Top

I was surprised to see the work starting first on the Roosevelt Island Tower because as reported in this February 28 post:

The construction plan schedule for the Tram Modernization has been altered slightly. Initially, RIOC and POMA planned working on the Tram Towers on the Roosevelt Island side first, which they say will be easier, in order to gain some experience prior to working on the more difficult Manhattan side towers. That has changed because RIOC was informed by NYC that the Department of Transportation is scheduled to start working May 15 in the same 59th street area on a water tunnel project. POMA will now work on the Manhattan side Towers first so that there is no conflict with DOT's projected May 15 water tunnel start date

It was later decided to be more important to start on the Roosevelt Island Tram Tower because the Manhattan Tower will be a much more difficult job and the experience gained by working on the Roosevelt Island Tower first would be very helpful. According to Mr. Shane:

The timing of when they choose to schedule work is up to the contractors. As might come as no surprise, the H2O work is delayed. Crane permitting and street closure scheduling is all up to DOB and DOT.

Earlier today a Tower Hanger Arm was delivered and is resting alongside it's new home to be.

Yesterday's disruption in Roosevelt Island Tram service was due to filming scenes of the Tyra Banks catwalk TV show America's Next Top Model. The production crew posted this notice warning Tram Riders to stay out of the videotaping area if they did not want their likeness or voice used in any possible distribution platform now known or hereafter devised.


America's Next Top Model also shot scenes at the Good Shepherd Community Center. One Roosevelt Island resident tweeted:

No pictures of models or Tyra Banks either but here is the limo waiting outside Good Shepherd.


Another Roosevelt Island resident tweeted:

Tyra Banks came to Roosevelt Island, today!by tram! BUT I couldn't see her.woo...this was my 1st chance to see someone famous in US.

I could not confirm that Tyra Banks came to Roosevelt Island with the show. In fact, I was specifically told she did not. Maybe next time the show comes to Roosevelt Island Tyra will be here and take some pictures - Just like Andy Garcia did.
