Roosevelt Island US Chess Federation Rated Tournament For Kids 6-17 Saturday October 12 Hosted By RI Public Library And RIOC At Sportspark - Learn The Magic Of Chess

A Must Do event for Roosevelt Island kids interested in Chess - whether you're a top notch player or a beginner. The NYPL Roosevelt Island branch together with the Roosevelt Island Youth Center is hosting a US Chess Federation (USCF) rated tournament this Saturday October 12.

According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):

The Roosevelt Island Youth Center will host its first rated tournament, in partnership with the R.I. Branch Library, this Saturday, October 12th at 1 PM inside the Sportspark gymnasium, located at 250 Main Street. The free tournament is open to children ages 6-17.

Tournament Format: Swiss system tournament of 3 rounds. Timed games with 25 minutes and a 5-second delay.

Three sections:

Unrated Non-USCF Member

Under 700 USCF Member

Under 1300 USCF Member

United States Chess Federation (USCF) rated tournament for Under 700 and Under 1300 players.

If you are a member of the USCF please include your USCF ID in the registration form.

All players will receive a medal for participating and the top three players at each level will receive trophies.

The Roosevelt Island Library has a kids chess club that meets Thursdays at 4 PM in October and an adult chess club that meets Tuesdays at 3 PM

The Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) adds:

The Roosevelt Island Library and Youth Center Chess Tournament is soliciting players for the Island’s first-ever rated competition February 22.

Up to 30 players will compete in three different levels: beginner, intermediate and rated players according to their chess level. The competition will be a double elimination tournament with each game lasting no more than 25 minutes maximum.

All players will receive a medal for participating and the top three players at each level will receive trophies.

All players must be at least six-years-old to participate.

Register for free in person at the Roosevelt Island Library, 524 Main Street, or call 212.308.6243.

“We are so thrilled that our children will have the opportunity to participate in one of the world’s most classic games,” said Erica Spencer-EL, director of RIOC Youth Center where a regular chess program was initiated at Sportspark last fall. “Chess helps children improve their IQs, concentration, memory and problem-solving skills.”

The Roosevelt Island NY Public Library will also be hosting a series of Chess Movies including:

• Searching For Bobby Fisher,
• Pawn Sacrifice and
• Queen of Katwe.

The Roosevelt Island Kids Chess Club meets 4-5:30 PM tomorrow, Thursday, January 31 at the Roosevelt Island NY Public Library.

In Memory Of Roosevelt Island Resident Brian Dorfmann, Mom Donates Chess Table And Benches For Capobianco Field - Memorial Service June 25

Roosevelt Island resident Brian Dorfmann passed away April 16, 2016.

During the May 25, Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Board of Directors meeting (video of full meeting here), RIOC President Susan Rosenthal reported that Brian's mother, Florine, is donating a chess table and benches in Brian's memory. The Chess table and benches will be located at Capobianco Field where there will be a memorial service on June 25.



RIOC Director Michael Shinozaki added:

Brian was a good man.

chess and scrabble. While many of our local youth have most of these games at home, I don’t think Mom is going to take kindly to your 39 friends running around the house.

In addition to the games, our kids had all the franks and drinks they could stand and then played some more.

Tomorrow we will be playing games and singing karaoke. So come on over and see what treats we have for you and your friends, everyone is invited!!!!! This program will be available on Friday and Saturday until the middle of March. Also our winter basketball leagues have begun and the schedules will be posted on this blog.
