You're Invited To May 21 Talk By Artist Diana Cooper About Her Roosevelt Island "Double Take" Mosaic Mural - A Ten Year Odyssey From Start To Finish Before Installed In Front Of MTA's East River Ventilation Tunnel

As reported July 14, 2023:

On Wednesday July 6, the plywood wall was removed from the front of the MTA's East River Ventilation shaft across from the Roosevelt Island F Train subway station to unveil the Double Take mosaic by artist Diana Cooper....

The Roosevelt Island Historical Society (RIHS) is hosting a free lecture by Ms Cooper about the "Double Take" mural tomorrow evening, May 21, at the NY Public Library Roosevelt Island branch (504 Main Street) beginning at 6:30 p.m. You're invited to attend the free lecture.

RIHS President Judy Berdy reported at the Double Take unveiling last July :

THE WALL IS REVEALED

IT TOOK OVER 10 YEARS!

The story starts in February, 2013 when the RIHS asked RIOC to find a better design for the wall outside the vent shaft building across from our subway station.

When at a RIOC Operations Committe meeting I learned of the project and that a brick wall was the idea planned for the wall. The RIOC Operations Committee approved the idea and informed New York Transit.

Little did I know this would be a 10 year odyssey.

The first step was for architects to come and examine the site. They arrived by subway and commented on the ugly site of the vent shaft building obstructing the Manhattan skyline.

A time later MTA Arts for Transit (now MTA Art & Design) held a meeting with a committee of professional including curators, artists, political representatives and staff to select a group of artists to be asked to submit designs. After reviewing the work of about 25 artists the group was down to five candidates.

After submissions by three artists (two were not available) Diana Cooper was chosen. This was just the beginning of the project that suffered from many delays....

I spoke with Ms Cooper

and Ms Berdy

in May 2022 about the Double Take mural.

Wonderful Jazz Jam Session Performed Today At The Roosevelt Island Library Outdoor Plaza Celebrating International Jazz Day - Watch And Enjoy Video Of The Jam

International Jazz Day was celebrated this afternoon at the Roosevelt Island Public Library Outdoor Plaza with a wonderful Jazz Jam session performed by local musicians together with some of their musician and vocalist friends.

Roosevelt Island residents of all ages enjoyed today's Jazz Jam.

Here's a little bit of what happened - Watermelon Man Cantaloupe Island by Herbie Hancock.

Jazz guitarist Susheel explained the impromptu nature of the jam session by remarking:

This is the beautiful thing about a jam session. We don't know what we're going to play. Hopefully these guys don't call something we have no idea about. Fortunately, protocol is to suggest a tune that most of us, some of us, know.

It was a great time this afternoon and the outdoor Library Plaza is a fantastic spot to hold a concert. Hopefully more outdoor concerts will take place at the Library Plaza this year.

Good job by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC), the Roosevelt Island NYPL branch and especially the performing musicians putting the event on. Thanks to all of you!

RIHS Invites You To Free Lecture Exploring Redevelopment Of Roosevelt Island From Visionary Master Plan By Architects Phillip Johnson And John Burgee To Present Day - Tuesday Evening March 19 At Roosevelt Island NYPL Library

The Roosevelt Island Historical Society (RIHS) presents:

Redeveloping Roosevelt Island: Today's Interpolation of the 1969 Master Plan
6:30 PM Tuesday March 19 at the Roosevelt Island NYPL branch (504 Main Street).

According to the Roosevelt Island NYPL branch:

51 years ago, an isolated island in the East River underwent a transformation and was renamed Roosevelt Island, shedding its former identity as Welfare Island. Once home to numerous public institutions, the island has since evolved into a vibrant community that attracts thousands of tourists annually. However, many visitors and even residents remain unaware of its intricate history, encompassing decades of development in a relatively small space.

In 1969, architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee introduced the visionary master plan titled "The Island that Nobody Knows." This plan aimed to create a groundbreaking, new community as a response to the urban exodus of previous decades. Despite its positive reception, the plan fell short of complete realization. Today's Roosevelt Island reflects only a fraction of Johnson and Burgee's ambitious vision.

Join us for a presentation hosted by The Roosevelt Island Historical Society, featuring Hunter College graduate student Dylan Brown. Brown will delve into the intricate redevelopment of Roosevelt Island and illuminate how its current state diverges from the original master plan. Explore this fascinating journey through archival materials exclusively sourced from The Roosevelt Island Historical Society's collections.

Roosevelt Island NY Public Library Branch Manager Asks Residents To Sign Online Letter To TELL CITY HALL: NO CUTS TO LIBRARIES

According to the NY Public Library:

On April 26, 2023, Mayor Adams announced that the additional 4% cut to public library budgets that was proposed in early April will be reversed. We are grateful that this additional cut has been restored—but libraries are still facing $36.2M in budget cuts. It’s imperative that we continue to make our voices heard and remind City Hall that our public libraries make NYC stronger, and funding must be fully restored.

Your library and your community need your help. New York City leaders are hard at work on NYC’s budget—and right now New York City’s public libraries are facing a potential $36.2 million cut that will severely impact our ability to deliver the free services, programs, and resources New Yorkers depend on.

That’s why we are asking you to stand by your library and send a note right now. Sign your name to instantly deliver a message to Mayor Adams and the New York City Council letting them know how critical libraries are to the communities they serve. From books and e-books to job-search help to safe spaces for teens to learn and grow, our libraries provide all New Yorkers with the support and resources they need to succeed.

Your letter and the contact information you enter below will be instantly delivered to Mayor Eric Adams, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Majority Leader Keith Powers, Council Finance Chair Justin Brannan, Committee on Libraries Chair Chi Ossé, and your local Council Member....

Tell City Hall: No Cuts To Libraries

Hi Roosevelt Island community....

... I'm here to promote Library services and to share a very special and important message with you. I have here our advocacy letter that we're requesting our community to please sign online or on-site at the library.

It's to prevent a 36 million dollar budget cut that the city is attempting to put on the library which would impact our hiring, it would impact our days of operation and would impact access to our print media and digital resources.

So please stop by the library to fill out this advocacy letter or you can do it online.

You can sign the online letter to:

Tell City Hall: No Cuts To Libraries

It's Toddler Storytime Today At The NY Public Library Roosevelt Island Branch With NYC Council Member Julie Menin, Also Ms Menin Urges RIOC And MTA To Install Long Delayed OMNY System For Roosevelt Island Tram And NYC Council Redistricting May Move Us To A Queens District

NYC Council Member Julie Menin visited the NY Public Library Roosevelt Island Branch this morning. Ms Menin read at the Toddler Storytime, gave out books to the children and took a tour of the Library and its new outdoor plaza with Branch Librarian Carlos Chavez.

Also, Ms Menin shares a July 22 letter she wrote to MTA Chair Janno Lieber and Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President Shelton Haynes regarding the Roosevelt Island July 16-17 Transportation mess. According to Ms Menin's letter:

I write to you both regarding the difficult travel conditions that residents and visitors of Roosevelt Island faced this past weekend. Over the days of July 16 and 17, constituents reached out to our office complaining about two hour wait times at the tram station. The issues with transportation to the island stemmed from a lack of coordination between RIOC and the MTA. The MTA altered the standard routing of the F train for the weekend while RIOC is in the midst of performing tram work. Altering the subway schedule combined with limited tram service led to exceptionally long wait times due to the lack of other viable options to commute onto and off the island....

Ms Menin urged the MTA and RIOC to swiftly install the long delayed OMNY payment system for the Roosevelt Island Tram.

Under a preliminary plan for NYC Council redistricting, Roosevelt Island will be moved from Ms Menin's NYC Council District 5 to Queens NYC Council District 26 currently represented by Julie Won.

Were Council Members Menin and Won discussing the redistricting plan at lunch today? Stay tuned for more on efforts to keep Roosevelt Island in Manhattan NYC Council District 5.

I'm here today to talk a little bit about the summer outdoor furniture that we have installed in the Library Plaza right behind me.

We have a total of four umbrella tables and umbrella shades as well as six folding tables and folding chairs that you'll see distributed throughout the the plaza. Our goal is to turn this library plaza into a destination for the islanders and for people visiting the island.

They'll have a place where they can sit and read, use their mobile devices,

and have their meal. We will also be using the library plaza for programs and outreach like our summer learning kickoff....

Furniture will be available during the hours of operation that the library is open to the public. By 6 pm we'll be putting furniture away. On certain days like Monday and Wednesday that we close at eight we won't have it out too late, only until six pm every day.

Roosevelt Island Public Library Selected To Share $250 Thousand In Participatory Budget Funding From NYC Council Member Julie Menin - NYPL RI Branch Manager Carlos Chavez Says Money To Be Used For Tech Upgrades Including New Computers, Laptops, Printers, Fax Systems And WiFi Access

Roosevelt Island and Upper East Side NYC Council Member Julie Menin announced yesterday that the Roosevelt Island Public Library was among the winners in the District 5 Participatory Budgeting voting and will share $250 Thousand with the Webster and 67th Street New York Public Library branches to fund technology upgrades.

Roosevelt Island NYPL Branch Manager Carlos Chavez

reports:

The Roosevelt Island Library is honored to be selected by the community to receive this funding along with our fellow libraries that will be put towards upgrading and refreshing branch technology, which includes desktop computers, laptops, printers, fax systems and WiFi access. Many thanks to Council Member Menin and Roosevelt Islanders for showing their appreciation of the library and we look forward to seeing you at the branch!

According to April 18 press release from Ms Menin:

Council Member Julie Menin is proud to announce the results of her first annual participatory budgeting process within New York City Council District 5, which garnered a total of 1,838 votes and a tie for first between the top two projects. Council Member Menin had previously announced that projects with the most votes up until $1 million has been accounted for will be funded. As a result of this year's success, Council Member Menin will be allocating additional capital funding in order to fully fund the top six voted projects totaling $1,380,000.

The winning projects are as follows:

Schoolyard Resurfacing for M.S. 114 and P.S. 138  - 798 votes; This $380,000 project will replace the slippery, degraded mats of the schoolyard that date back to the building's construction over a decade ago. This will improve the overall safety and sanitary conditions for the students

Technology Upgrades at New York Public Libraries - 798 votes; This $250,000 project will provide technology enhancements at Roosevelt Island, Webster, and 67th Street Libraries.

Pathway Repavings- 747 votes; This $300,000 project will repave 10,000 square feet of paths in Carl Schurz Park.

“I am thrilled that our Office’s first annual participatory budgeting process was an unqualified success with robust community engagement,” said Council Member Julie Menin. “Not only is my office providing the one million dollars to fund the three winning projects, but in response to the enormous success of this year's cycle and the critical need for capital improvements, I am proud to raise my commitment to $1,380,000 to fund an additional 3. Hundreds of constituents have reached out to our office about these projects so it is great to foster civic engagement in the entire community and help these projects come to fruition. I look forward to growing participatory budgeting in future years!”

“All of us are delighted to have this funding to begin the renovation of our school yard. We are eager to revive our yard with new matting that will keep our students happy, safe and clean," said David Getz, the Principal of M.S. 114 and P.S. 138.

“The New York Public Library is grateful to the community for selecting our branches -- Roosevelt Island, Webster, and 67th Street libraries -- to be the recipients of $250,000 for technology improvements," said Sumie Ota, The New York Public Library's Associate Director for the East Manhattan Neighborhood Library Network. "It is an honor to be chosen by those we serve to receive this important funding, which supports the vital resources and services available at our branches. Thank you to Council Member Menin and the residents of the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island for this wonderful recognition.”

"We are heartened and inspired by the outpouring of support from the community. It is wonderful to see that Carl Schurz Park means so much to so many,” said Judy Howard, Board Chair of the Carl Schurz Park Conservancy.

Additional Projects to be funded:

Four NYPD Cameras- 668 votes; This $160,000 project will fund 4 NYPD cameras in Council District 5. These security cameras would enhance crime prevention, provide a sense of security in public areas, and establish surveillance in underserved areas.

M.S. 177 Bathroom Renovations- 665 votes; This $225,000 project will renovate one faculty and one student bathroom, both of which are in a general state of disrepair. It would upgrade the sinks, faucets, toilets, soap dispensers, mirrors, tile floors, stalls, paper towel dispensers, and urinals.

P.S. 151 Water Bottle Filling Stations- 652 votes; This $64,000 project will install 8 water bottle filling stations to cover each of the five floors of the school.

"We are thrilled to have been granted the funding for new bathrooms at Yorkville East Middle School. This was driven by our students and their families, and we're so happy their voices were heard. The process of participatory budgeting brought an important and meaningful civics lesson to our entire student body. Thank you, CM Menin, for bringing this opportunity to our school," said Christina Riggio, the Principal of M.S. 177.

Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget. Over 40 project proposals were submitted and vetted by City agencies to ensure compliance and feasibility. Ballot items must be a physical infrastructure project that benefits the public and on City-owned property, have an estimated cost of at least $50,000 but not more than $550,000, and have a lifespan of at least 5 years. Council Member Menin had announced that projects with the most votes up until $1 million has been accounted for will be funded.

In this year’s cycle, residents aged 11 and over of City Council District 5 (Upper East Side's Yorkville, Lenox Hill, Carnegie Hill, Roosevelt Island, Midtown East, Sutton Place, El Barrio in East Harlem) had the opportunity to vote for up to five projects from a range of nine different projects.

The vote tally was as follows.
