Resident Interaction with Historic Preservation: A Case Study of Roosevelt Island, NY

and asks for your help by filling out this survey.

My name is Emma Brody and I am a student at Barnard College writing my senior thesis about historic preservation on Roosevelt Island. The purpose of this survey is to determine how Roosevelt Island residents interact with historically preserved sites on the Island in their everyday life. I greatly appreciate your participation.

Data will be collected anonymously and no identifying information will be collected. Participation is voluntary and you may refuse to participate or stop participating at any time. There are no expected risks to the participant for completing this survey.

This survey is open to adults age 18 and older.

You're Invited To Historic Preservation On Roosevelt Island Free Public Lecture Presented By Roosevelt Island Historical Society Thursday January 17 At RI Public Library

The Roosevelt Island Historical Society (RIHS) is hosting a free public lecture titled Historic Preservation On Roosevelt Island And Beyond Thursday, January 17 (6:30 PM) at the NY Public Library Roosevelt Island Branch (524 Main Street)

According to RIHS:

Historic preservation combines multiple disciplines: architecture, design, knowledge of period materials and construction techniques, plus communication to manage the process of building owners, regulators and the masons and builders who perform the work.

Architect Thomas A. Fenniman, AIA, has completed work on the Visitors Center Kiosk

and the slate roof and narthex restoration of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, as well as a Condition Study of the Renwick Lighthouse. With over 35 years experience working in NYC and the metropolitan area, Fenniman has developed a special expertise in working with non-profit institutions and in the creative use of cost-effective designs and solutions with a commitment to quality. His firm has been recognized for excellence in historic restoration by numerous State and local agencies including The New York State Parks Department, The New York Landmarks Conservancy, Friends of the Upper Eastside, The Victorian Society of New York, and the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.

Fenniman will speak on these projects and others completed in Manhattan and Brooklyn at a lecture presented by the Roosevelt Island Historical Society at the New York Public Library Branch on Roosevelt Island, on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.

The event is FREE and open to the public. It is the third in the Society’s annual series of fall lectures, which is supported by funds provided by Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation’s Public Purpose Fund and New York City Council Member Ben Kallos, with funding from the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development.

Roosevelt Island New York Public Library Branch Named Literary Landmark In Recognition Of Works By Nellie Bly, Horatio Alger, Stephen Crane, O. Henry & Eugene O'Neil - Ceremonial Plaque Unveiling April 12

Roosevelt Island New York Public Library Branch manager Nicole Nelson reports:

The New York Public Library is pleased to have the Roosevelt Island Library named as a "Literary Landmark" by the Empire State Center for the Book and United for Libraries. It's a recognition not just of Nellie Bly's Ten Days in a Mad-House, but of the island's appearance in works by Horatio Alger (Ragged Dick), Stephen Crane (Maggie, A Girl of the Streets), O. Henry (The Cop and the Anthem) and Eugene O'Neil (The Hairy Ape)

There will be a brief ceremony on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, 2:00 pm. to unveil the Literary Landmark plaque at the library.

The Literary Landmarks Association was founded in 1986 by former FOLUSA president Frederick G. Ruffner to encourage the dedication of historic literary sites....

and:

... Dedications have included homes of famous writers (Tennessee Williams, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, William Faulkner), libraries and museum collections, literary scenes (such as John's Grill in San Francisco, immortalized by Dashiell Hammett, and Willa Cather's Prairie near Red Cloud, Nebraska), and even "Grip" the Raven, formerly the pet of Charles Dickens and inspiration to Edgar Allan Poe and now presiding (stuffed) at the Rare Books Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia. The list of dedicated sites continues to grow....

We had our very first Roosevelt Island Historic Ride Sunday, November 16, and it went really well!

There were a total of 21 adults and children, some with their own bicycles and some using bikes from the Bike New York fleet. Joining me on the ride was Rich Conroy, Education Director at Bike New York. Janet Falk, a member of the Roosevelt Island Historical Society, led the tour around the island.

We stopped at the six historic landmarks, where Janet shared interesting facts and stories.

Everyone agreed they learned a lot about the island's history! After the ride, we went to Main Street Sweets for a hot beverage, which was nice because the weather was FREEZING that day! We plan a spring bike tour and will announce it when the date is determined.
