Urban Omnibus reports on a newly released Judgement Map for New York City neighborhoods. According to Urban Omnibus:

In March, we posted the first Judgmental Map of NYC by Joe Larson. Though hilarious, his colorful comments were mostly located to Manhattan, which Untapped reader Ivan also pointed out in the comments “Hey look at that someone who thinks NYC doesn’t extend past Manhattan how cute.” As if responding to that cue, Larson released an all new judgmental map this week....

Updated Google Satellite Map Of Roosevelt Island Provides Great Aerial Views Including Southpoint Park Construction & New Riverwalk Buildings

Received the following message from Jason a couple of weeks ago.

I'm not sure if this really counts as a tip but it was of interest to me...

Google maps (maps.google.com) finally updated their satellite views of RI. The view it had been using up to today still had the Riverwalk buildings under construction. I first noticed the changes because those things (transports?) docked across the river are now very visible from above.

Is "Isla de Roosevelt" a place or is it just a quirk label?

You might see more things of interest than me.

It's a great map. Play around with it and check out the construction at Southpoint Park on the southern end of the Island.

All of your Roosevelt Island questions may now be more easily answered, well maybe not all but many, because Roosevelt Island resident Vini Fortuna has created a Roosevelt Island Google Search engine. Vini writes:

I'm writing to let you know that I've created a Google Custom Search Engine for Roosevelt Island.

It seems really useful for Roosevelt Island residents. You should give it a try. Some interesting queries are: [submetering], [soccer field], [dance], [cats].

You may restrict your results to Blogs only, RIOC only or The Wire only, but it usually searches many more sites. The search engine is also easily embeddable in any page.

Biking to Roosevelt Island - Enjoy the Wonderful Views But Be Careful On Bridge

One of blogger Bike Dummy's favorite New York City bicycle rides is to Roosevelt Island because:

The thing I enjoy most about it are the spectacular views and the fact that you can be completely and totally alone.
Past the ruin of the old smallpox hospital (BikeDummy, Sept. 2007) all the way at the tip of the island, is a spot to view the complete panorama of the East River - from the United Nations to LIC.

As I have written many times before, the wonderful panoramic views described by Bike Dummy are in danger of being ruined forever if what some refer to as the Louis Kahn Death Box (others refer to it incorrectly as the FDR memorial) is ever built.

Bike Dummy advises to be careful on the Roosevelt Island Bridge at 36th Avenue and Vernon B'lvd:

The surface of the bridge is metal grating so I wouldn't ride across it unless you've got a mountain bike. The path is very narrow and is used by pedestrians as well, so you may need to dismount and walk your bike. Once across, just follow the roads. The island is a closed loop so it's not like you can get lost.

Let's take a bike ride from Prospect Heights Brooklyn through Bed-Stuy, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, over the Pulaski Bridge into Long Island City and then to the Roosevelt Island Bridge. A total of 7.87 miles in two and a half minutes thanks to this time lapse video. Unfortunately, the rider had his bike tires sliced up by riding over the grating on the Roosevelt Island Bridge. Had he taken the temporary pedestrian pathway on the side of the bridge, the tires would have been OK.
