Very funny piece of satire. I am glad to see that political humor will survive the end of the Bush era.

Some Obama supporters may have been overly obsessive but they contributed to keeping Sarah Palin out of the White House. This interview by Fox's Bill O"Reilly of Fox correspondent Carl Cameron demonstrates how spectacularly unqualified Governor Sarah Palin was to be Vice President and more importantly, how irresponsible Senator McCain was to select her in the first place.

Andrew Sullivan asks what is the responsibility of the press to find a way to reveal important information to the public despite it being acquired "off the record". Sullivan writes of the press covering the McCain/Palin campaign:

... They kept taking Palin seriously as a veep candidate when she didn't come close to even minimal standards for passing a citizenship test. I'm sorry but I think this is a terrible failing, and it is a reason the mainstream media are imploding. They let the rules of the game over-rule their duty to tell the American people the truth as they began to discover it. The truth is that Sarah Palin had no business whatever being on a national ticket. It was an insanely reckless choice. She could never adequately perform the job of president at a moment's notice, and the McCain campaign and their media enablers were putting this country and the world at serious risk by perpetuating this farce.

It was a farce. And it was a potential threat to national security if anything happened to McCain in office. But they couldn't admit a mistake because it would have killed their campaign, destroying our impression of McCain's judgment and management skills. So they kept this farce alive for two months, putting the country at potentially great risk to massage their own careers. Now they are doing all they can to dump on her. But the dumpage goes both ways. The McCain camp picked Palin and stuck with her far longer than any people who put country first would have. Every reason why she should not have been picked is a reason why McCain should never have been president.

The trashing of her is unseemly, and some of the particulars—the bathrobe bit for example—don't seem all that important. But if it is true that Gov. Palin did not know that South Africa was a country on the continent of Africa, it is the type of information that voters should know before her career progresses. And I don't think, by the way, that most people on the Left fear her.

New Roosevelt Island Blogger Spots Obama Vote Boat Sailboat on East River

Roosevelt Island has a new blogger, Hayley in New York and she thinks it is the coolest place ever. Last Friday she wrote:

Seadogs for Obama!
Today when I came out of the subway here on Roosevelt Island I saw the greatest thing ever: an Obama-themed sailboat floating in the East River. Seriously, this thing's sails were red, white, and blue and featured a giant image of Obama's face. Sadly, I didn't have my camera with me and a Google search for a picture turned up nothing...you'll just have to trust me that it was pretty cool :)

I also saw the Obama sailboat on the East River heading towards the 59th Street Bridge on Friday. I tried to take a picture but it was too far away at that point. I noticed two firemen in a FDNY truck nearby, one of whom took a picture of the Obama boat and asked him if he could send a picture to me so that I could post it. He said he would if he could figure out how to do it. He also said that FDNY received a call that the sailboat was in trouble but upon reaching the scene observed that the Obama sailboat was not in any trouble and was being operated by a very good sailor doing very skilled maneuvers in the water.

During John McCain and Sarah Palin's joint interview with NBC's Brian Williams, one of the Republican party candidates demonstrated great disdain for urban America, particularly our home here in New York City. Surprisingly, this time it was not Governor Sarah Palin, but Senator Maverick, John McCain.

Ben Smith of Politic0 has the transcript of this exchange:

WILLIAMS: Who is a member of the elite?

PALIN: Oh, I guess just people who think that they're better than anyone else. And-- John McCain and I are so committed to serving every American. Hard-working, middle-class Americans who are so desiring of this economy getting put back on the right track. And winning these wars. And America's starting to reach her potential. And that is opportunity and hope provided everyone equally. So anyone who thinks that they are-- I guess-- better than anyone else, that's-- that's my definition of elitism.

WILLIAMS: So it's not education? It's not income-based? It's--

PALIN: Anyone who thinks that they're better than someone else.

WILLIAMS: --a state of mind? It's not geography?

PALIN: 'Course not.

WILLIAMS: Senator?

MCCAIN: I-- I know where a lot of 'em live. (LAUGH)

WILLIAMS: Where's that?

MCCAIN: Well, in our nation's capital and New York City. I've seen it. I've lived there. I know the town. I know-- I know what a lot of these elitists are. The ones that she never went to a cocktail party with in Georgetown. I'll be very frank with you. Who think that they can dictate what they believe to America rather than let Americans decide for themselves.

I am sick and tired of hearing that living in New York City or any urban area somehow makes you less Pro American than those who live in the so-called heartland. or that small town values are superior to big city values. I agree with Craigslist founder and customer service representative Craig Newmark when he writes:

From my personal experience, I can tell you that pretty much all Americans have a common set of values, mostly derived from the same shared value. It's the notion that you should treat other people like you want to be treated. If you feel that, you feel that people should treat others fairly. We should all compete on a level playing field, and play by the same rule; that's how to get ahead.

Beyond that, people generally feel that once they've provided for themselves, they should give someone else a break. That's the basis for all philanthropy.

Sure, people make other decisions about values for lots of other reasons. However, our shared values unite us; we have more in common than that which separates us.

Here's a preview of tonight's Vice Presidential debate between Senator Joe Biden and Governor Sarah Palin. They respond separately to questions by Katie Couric on Roe v. Wade, the constitutional right to privacy and whether either can name a Supreme Court decision they disagree with.



It is very, very scary to contemplate Palin a heartbeat away from the Presidency. There were a whole host of qualified Republican candidates for Vice- President that McCain could have chosen instead of Palin but didn't. Instead, he decided to throw his lot in with the Republican Party's Karl Rovian base of religious social conservatives spurning those independent and moderate voters who admired McCain's personal story and might have voted for him. According to this opinion piece from Fox News:

The Palin story is steeped in religion. Her supporters believe she is a modern day version of the biblical Queen Esther, sent by God to save the nation from peril "for such a time as this," and prophetic e-mails proclaiming that Palin is going to win are being forwarded around cyberspace as we speak.

McCain's reckless and ill informed decision to select her as his Vice-Presidential candidate should disqualify him as being competent to be President.

What happened to John McCain? As Richard Cohen recently wrote in the Washington Post:

What impressed me most about McCain was the effect he had on his audiences, particularly young people. When he talked about service to a cause greater than oneself, he struck a chord. He expressed his message in words, but he packaged it in the McCain story -- that man, beaten to a pulp, who chose honor over freedom. This had nothing to do with access. It had to do with integrity.

McCain has soiled all that. His opportunistic and irresponsible choice of Sarah Palin as his political heir -- the person in whose hands he would leave the country -- is a form of personal treason, a betrayal of all he once stood for. Palin, no matter what her other attributes, is shockingly unprepared to become president. McCain knows that. He means to win, which is all right; he means to win at all costs, which is not.

Does John McCain really really think Americans are stupid enough to buy this nonsense.

A reader of this post sent in another perspective on Sarah Palin's Speech, John McCain and the Presidential election.

I saw the Palin speech and it was terrific - kudos to the writers - and she's quite a performer as well. Aside from the abortion and gay rights issues, which most Northeasterners, including Republicans, can't stomach, their policies are solid. Because people can't see past the social issues(and they concern me deeply as well), many tune out the rest of the message. How good is it that even McCain the following night scolded his own party for their actions over the past several years? Perhaps the party did not stay true to its principles, and must be punished. But politicians never learn, and the Dems' big gov't approach is bankrupt, IMHO, and much of the country continues to agree. That is why every election, regardless of the scoundrels running, is so close.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin gave a very good speech at last night's Republican Party Convention. Those in attendance certainly loved it as will the social conservative base of the Republican Party but the big question to be decided over the next several months is how will moderate Republican and Independent voters react to her. As reported in the NY Times, Ms. Palin:

... was seeking to wrest back the narrative of her life and redefine herself to the American public after a rocky start that has put Mr. McCain’s closest aides on edge. Ms. Palin’s appearance electrified a convention that has been consumed by questions of whether she was up to the job, as she launched slashing attacks on Mr. Obama’s claims of experience.

“Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown,” Ms. Palin told the delegates in a speech that sought to eviscerate Mr. Obama, as delegates waved signs that said “I love hockey moms.” “And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

As the crowd cheered its approval, Ms. Palin went on: “I might add that in small towns we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening.”

The Presidential Primary campaigns are over and the general election has begun between Senator Obama and President Bush now seeking his third term in office. Oops - my mistake. I meant between Senators Obama and McCain but it is hard to find much of a difference between the President and Senator McCain since Senator McCain started to run for the 2008 Presidency.
