Kamala Harris Overwhelmingly Wins 2024 Presidential Vote On Roosevelt Island - Not True For The Nation, Donald Trump Is The Next President Of United States

I wish I could say that as Roosevelt Island votes in the 2024 Presidential election, so does the rest of the nation. Sadly, that was not true as Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential election.

How did Roosevelt Island vote in the election?

Roosevelt Island Early Vote and Election Day Coordinator Judy Berdy reports that 1,997 ballots were cast during early voting and 1,000 ballots were cast on Election Day for a total of 2,997 votes. The most ever.

According to the NYC Board Of Election November 5,2024 unofficial results,

Kamala Harris received a total of 1,846 votes, Donald Trump received 382 votes and write in votes were 46 for a total of 2,274 with 99% reporting in Roosevelt Island Election Districts 59 - 62.

I'm not sure why there is a difference between the 2997 combined Early Voting/Election day ballots reported and the unofficial 2274 Board of Election voting results reported.

The NYC Map Atlas compares the 2020/2024 Presidential Election vote numbers by Election Districts including Roosevelt Island.

Click here to compare how Roosevelt Island voted between Biden/Trump in 2020 and Harris/Trump in 2024. The 2024 vote numbers are slightly different than the Board of Election numbers.

The City also breaks down the NYC Presidential vote by Election District.

According to the NY Times:

Trump now control the Presidency, Senate and Supreme Court. Control of the House of Representatives is still to be determined.

Roosevelt Island Residents Vote Overwhelmingly For Hillary Clinton But Donald Trump Wins And Is President Elect - Are You And Your Kids OK?

According to the NYC Board of Elections, Roosevelt Island residents

Roosevelt Island Residents Voting At PS/IS 217 11/8/16

voted in yesterday's Presidential Election as follows:
  • Clinton 2,229
  • Trump 331
  • Stein 70
  • Johnson 34
  • Write in 28
These numbers do not include the votes from the Election District 87 (the Octagon Building) which for some reason have not been reported in this tally.

The vote tally for Roosevelt Island Election Districts (82 E.D. - 87) from the NYC Board of Elections is here.

The NY Times reports that Donald Trump received 279 Electoral Votes (270 needed for victory) to Hillary Clinton's 228. Ms. Clinton received more total votes 59,733,960 (47.7%) to Donald Trump's 59,520,324 (47.5%). Arizona's vote is not final yet and is not counted in this tally.

Have you come to terms yet with the results of yesterday's Presidential election? Does the phrase President-Elect Donald Trump fill you with gloom about the future of America, make you happy or just resigned to the next 4 years of President Trump?

Presidential Election Results From Roosevelt Island - Increased Voter Turnout But Where Did They Come From?

Obama/Biden Thank You Image

There was a significant increase in the number of Roosevelt Island voters who participated in the 2008 Presidential election as compared to 2004. This year 2,873 Roosevelt Islanders voted, 2418 for President- Elect (that sounds good) Barack Obama, 424 for Senator John McCain and 31 for others. Don't know if that number includes absentee and provisional ballots.

In the 2004 Presidential election, 2373 Roosevelt Islanders voted, Kerry received 1973 votes, Bush 380 and Nader 20.

So that means 500 more Roosevelt Islanders voted in the 2008 Presidential Election than 2004. Did the additional voters come from the new residents at Southtown and Octagon or increased turnout from the other buildings? Probably some combination of the two. We do know from the Main Street WIRE's building by building election compilation that approximately 70 Southtown and 120 Octagon residents cast ballots for the RIRA elections. Presuming that these residents also voted in the Presidential election than at least 190 of the additional 500 votes came from the new buildings.

The 2008 Roosevelt Island general election results below are from the Main Street WIRE.

Barack Obama on American Patriotism - Remember, Don't Let Up, It Ain't Over 'Till It's Over

You Tube Video of June 30 The America We Love Speech

The Trail Blog from the Washington Post has the full written transcript of Barack Obama's Patriotism speech given June 30, 2008 at Independence Missouri. Excerpts:
... For me, as for most Americans, patriotism starts as a gut instinct, a loyalty and love for country rooted in my earliest memories. I'm not just talking about the recitations of the Pledge of Allegiance or the Thanksgiving pageants at school or the fireworks on the Fourth of July, as wonderful as those things may be. Rather, I'm referring to the way the American ideal wove its way throughout the lessons my family taught me as a child.

One of my earliest memories is of sitting on my grandfather's shoulders and watching the astronauts come to shore in Hawaii. I remember the cheers and small flags that people waved, and my grandfather explaining how we Americans could do anything we set our minds to do. That's my idea of America.

I remember listening to my grandmother telling stories about her work on a bomber assembly-line during World War II. I remember my grandfather handing me his dog-tags from his time in Patton's Army, and understanding that his defense of this country marked one of his greatest sources of pride. That's my idea of America.

I remember, when living for four years in Indonesia as a child, listening to my mother reading me the first lines of the Declaration of Independence - "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." I remember her explaining how this declaration applied to every American, black and white and brown alike; how those words, and words of the United States Constitution, protected us from the injustices that we witnessed other people suffering during those years abroad. That's my idea of America.
And:
... I believe those who attack America's flaws without acknowledging the singular greatness of our ideals, and their proven capacity to inspire a better world, do not truly understand America.

Of course, precisely because America isn't perfect, precisely because our ideals constantly demand more from us, patriotism can never be defined as loyalty to any particular leader or government or policy. As Mark Twain, that greatest of American satirists and proud son of Missouri, once wrote, "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." We may hope that our leaders and our government stand up for our ideals, and there are many times in our history when that's occurred. But when our laws, our leaders or our government are out of alignment with our ideals, then the dissent of ordinary Americans may prove to be one of the truest expression of patriotism....

... In the end, it may be this quality that best describes patriotism in my mind - not just a love of America in the abstract, but a very particular love for, and faith in, the American people. That is why our heart swells with pride at the sight of our flag; why we shed a tear as the lonely notes of Taps sound. For we know that the greatness of this country - its victories in war, its enormous wealth, its scientific and cultural achievements - all result from the energy and imagination of the American people; their toil, drive, struggle, restlessness, humor and quiet heroism.

That is the liberty we defend - the liberty of each of us to pursue our own dreams. That is the equality we seek - not an equality of results, but the chance of every single one of us to make it if we try. That is the community we strive to build - one in which we trust in this sometimes messy democracy of ours, one in which we continue to insist that there is nothing we cannot do when we put our mind to it, one in which we see ourselves as part of a larger story, our own fates wrapped up in the fates of those who share allegiance to America's happy and singular creed....
There's just one week left until the election. Take nothing for granted. No matter how good the polls look now an Obama victory is not a done deal until every state election is over next Tuesday. As the wise philosopher Yogi Berra remarked:
It ain't over 'till it's over

Make sure you vote and encourage family, friends and anyone else you know to vote Barack Obama for President of the United States. Also, be aware of potential problems with voting machines. From City Limits:
Eight years after hanging chads marred a presidential election and spurred calls for nationwide reform of voting systems, the signature of Election Day here is shifting from the heavy clank of metal machinery to the tap of fingertips on a computer screen....

Preview of Tonight's Vice Presidential Debate between Senator Biden and Governor Palin - Or Queen Esther

Here's a preview of tonight's Vice Presidential debate between Senator Joe Biden and Governor Sarah Palin. They respond separately to questions by Katie Couric on Roe v. Wade, the constitutional right to privacy and whether either can name a Supreme Court decision they disagree with.

It is very, very scary to contemplate Palin a heartbeat away from the Presidency. There were a whole host of qualified Republican candidates for Vice- President that McCain could have chosen instead of Palin but didn't. Instead, he decided to throw his lot in with the Republican Party's Karl Rovian base of religious social conservatives spurning those independent and moderate voters who admired McCain's personal story and might have voted for him. According to this opinion piece from Fox News:

The Palin story is steeped in religion. Her supporters believe she is a modern day version of the biblical Queen Esther, sent by God to save the nation from peril "for such a time as this," and prophetic e-mails proclaiming that Palin is going to win are being forwarded around cyberspace as we speak.
McCain's reckless and ill informed decision to select her as his Vice-Presidential candidate should disqualify him as being competent to be President.

Here's more of Sarah Palin's greatest hits!

You Tube Video of Sarah Palin interview excerpts

On the other hand, below is the Governor Sarah Palin Bio video from the Republican Convention.

You Tube Video of Sarah Palin Bio

What happened to John McCain? As Richard Cohen recently wrote in the Washington Post:
What impressed me most about McCain was the effect he had on his audiences, particularly young people. When he talked about service to a cause greater than oneself, he struck a chord. He expressed his message in words, but he packaged it in the McCain story -- that man, beaten to a pulp, who chose honor over freedom. This had nothing to do with access. It had to do with integrity.

McCain has soiled all that. His opportunistic and irresponsible choice of Sarah Palin as his political heir -- the person in whose hands he would leave the country -- is a form of personal treason, a betrayal of all he once stood for. Palin, no matter what her other attributes, is shockingly unprepared to become president. McCain knows that. He means to win, which is all right; he means to win at all costs, which is not.
Does John McCain really really think Americans are stupid enough to buy this nonsense.

Jon Stewart Skewers Fox News Analysts Karl Rove, Bill O'Reilly, and Sean Hannity - Hilliarious and Another View On the Presidential Election

A reader of this post sent in another perspective on Sarah Palin's Speech, John McCain and the Presidential election.

I saw the Palin speech and it was terrific - kudos to the writers - and she's quite a performer as well. Aside from the abortion and gay rights issues, which most Northeasterners, including Republicans, can't stomach, their policies are solid. Because people can't see past the social issues(and they concern me deeply as well), many tune out the rest of the message. How good is it that even McCain the following night scolded his own party for their actions over the past several years? Perhaps the party did not stay true to its principles, and must be punished. But politicians never learn, and the Dems' big gov't approach is bankrupt, IMHO, and much of the country continues to agree. That is why every election, regardless of the scoundrels running, is so close.

Story Behind John McCain Asking Sarah Palin To Be Republican Party Vice President Nominee

Image from Washington Post

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin gave a very good speech at last night's Republican Party Convention. Those in attendance certainly loved it as will the social conservative base of the Republican Party but the big question to be decided over the next several months is how will moderate Republican and Independent voters react to her. As reported in the NY Times, Ms. Palin:
... was seeking to wrest back the narrative of her life and redefine herself to the American public after a rocky start that has put Mr. McCain’s closest aides on edge. Ms. Palin’s appearance electrified a convention that has been consumed by questions of whether she was up to the job, as she launched slashing attacks on Mr. Obama’s claims of experience.

“Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown,” Ms. Palin told the delegates in a speech that sought to eviscerate Mr. Obama, as delegates waved signs that said “I love hockey moms.” “And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

As the crowd cheered its approval, Ms. Palin went on: “I might add that in small towns we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening.”
But, here's the real story behind Seantor McCain's selection of Sarah Palin to be the Republican Party Vice Presidential nominee.

I think and hope that the McCain - Palin team will be rejected in favor of Obama - Biden. More on the Convention at Real Clear Politics.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton Delegates United And Healed At The Convention - Looking Forward to Tonight's Acceptance Speech

Healing the Democrats with Jon Stewart and John Oliver from the Daily Show

Roosevelt Island's NY State Senator Jose Serrano is attending the Democratic Convention in Denver and blogging about it at the great New York political site, Room 8. According to Mr. Serrano, the Democratic Party delegates, including Hillary Clinton supporters, are united behind Barack Obama. From Room 8:
... From my vantage point – the New York Delegation seats – I was hard-pressed to find anyone sitting on their hands, or otherwise looking dissatisfied with the process. It's as clear as the Mile High air that Dems are united behind Obama.

Any hurt feelings over Clinton not getting the nomination, or not being selected veep, is red meat for the pundits, but hasn't exactly carried over to the mass of delegates (and we're the ones that matter most in this regard).

One telling sign: I overheard that some national reporters were scrounging around looking for delegates to get on camera and voice their displeasure with Obama. But they couldn't find anyone willing to do it.

At a certain point you have to ask whether a small segment of pundits go out and write the story / set the tone before they even take out their notebook...

Barack Obama Versus Who? McBush, Bushcain or John McCain - Now It Starts!

The Presidential Primary campaigns are over and the general election has begun between Senator Obama and President Bush now seeking his third term in office. Oops - my mistake. I meant between Senators Obama and McCain but it is hard to find much of a difference between the President and Senator McCain since Senator McCain started to run for the 2008 Presidency.

Senators Obama and McCain had their first joint appearance, though interviewed separately, at Rick Warren's Saddleback Civil Forum On The Presidency last Saturday. Transcript of the event is here and video here.

The 2008 Presidential campaign has started. More election information from a variety of news and opinion sources can be found at Real Clear Politics.
