Newly Renovated Roosevelt Island Lighthouse Will Be Illuminated Red, White And Blue This Weekend Starting Saturday Evening In Observance Of Memorial Day Says RIOC

According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):

In observance of Memorial Day, the newly renovated Lighthouse Tower will be illuminated red, white and blue from Saturday May 28th through Monday, May 30th.

Enjoy a happy and safe holiday weekend!

As reported last May 18:

Linda Doyle shares these beautiful photos taken last night of the restored Roosevelt Island Lighthouse and reports:

Tonight was the first night for testing with the colored light

The plan is to match the lights of the Empire State Building for holidays. They will change when needed. Memorial Day red, white and blue, etc.

I asked if she got to climb the stairs to the top?

Ms Doyle replied:

No. I thought about asking but was afraid that it might be dusty and filled with cobwebs. But if they are there tonight, I will ask.

According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):

Lighthouse Tower Opens

The Lighthouse Tower, designed by architect James Renwick, has been a prominent historic feature of Roosevelt Island since its construction in 1872. The Lighthouse was partially restored in the 1940s, complete with a low pitch 10 - sided lantern and was inducted into the National Register of Historic Places and designated a New York City Landmark in 1972 and 1976 respectively. In 2019, Thomas A. Fenniman Architects was hired to create construction documents to increase the useful life of the structure, eliminate potentially unsafe conditions, and reduce operating and maintenance expenses.

The exterior and interior restoration of the tower, included masonry restoration, concrete bracket and platform repair, railing restoration, replacement of spiral staircase, door and window restoration, as well as electrical and site work. These repairs remediated the many life and safety issues addressed for long-term use and will additionally decrease the operation and maintenance costs associated with the tower. “It is truly an honor to have rehabilitated this historic landmark for the Roosevelt Island community and visitors alike to enjoy. The Lighthouse Tower is a cornerstone and simply one of Roosevelt Islands treasures. I would like to thank our RIOC team, the architect and contractor for their work on this project.”, said Shelton J. Haynes, President and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC).

The restoration aspects and new lantern design were approved by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Landmarks Preservation Commission. “I am thrilled for the community to see the colored up-lighting on the tower and enjoy this space again. The conclusion of this project marks the last phase of our renovations to the northern tip of the Lighthouse Park that began with the renovations of the foot bridges in 2019.”, expressed Prince R. Shah, Assistant Director of Capital Planning and Projects at RIOC....

70th Anniversary Of World War 2 Allied D-Day Invasion Today, Roosevelt Island's Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney Honors NY Veterans - President Barack Obama Normandy D-Day Address Today

Today is the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

History.com reports:

During World War II (1939-1945), the Battle of Normandy, which lasted from June 1944 to August 1944, resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. Prior to D-Day, the Allies conducted a large-scale deception campaign designed to mislead the Germans about the intended invasion target. By late August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated, and by the following spring the Allies had defeated the Germans. The Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe....

According to this press release from Roosevelt Island's United States Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY-12), Ms. Maloney:
... is a member of a Congressional Delegation headed for Normandy to honor the sacrifices made by American troops during the D-Day Invasion 70 years ago. On Friday, June 6, the delegation will take part in observances of the anniversary at Omaha Beach and Sword Beach, in which U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande will participate.

“It is an honor to join my colleagues, and several New York veterans to honor the tremendous sacrifices made at the Normandy Beaches 70 years ago,” said Maloney. “During the Normandy landings, members of the American military and Allied Forces descended on the shores of France ready to die in order to rid France and the world of the genocidal imperialism of the Nazi occupiers. Many of the men who stormed the beaches of Juno, Gold, Omaha and Sword paid the ultimate price. As we reflect on the freedom France and the rest of the world won as a result of D-Day, I am so grateful for the sacrifice and the bravery of the men who fought that fight and are still with us today. It is a privilege to stand with them and celebrate their service.”

Several New York veterans will also take part in the observances:
Mr. Leo Cohen, New York, NY
Mr. Lawrence Friedland, New York, NY
Mr. John Trzaskos, Amsterdam, NY
Mr. Richard Baily, Johnson City, NY
Mr. Arnold Franco, New York
Mr. Jack Read, Brooklyn, New York
Mr. Stephen Weiss, Brooklyn, New York

On Tuesday, Maloney held an emotional ceremony at the VA Hospital in Manhattan to honor the bravery and service of veterans of World War II and those who stormed the beaches at Normandy in the fight to liberate France from Nazi occupation. Maloney, joined by NYC Mayor’s Office of Veterans’ Affairs Commissioner Terrance Holliday, awarded two veterans with Congressional Certificates and presented a number of military medals to one service member.

Congresswoman Maloney recognized local World War II and D-Day veterans, including Rocco Moretto, an Astoria native who fought at Normandy.

Rocco Moretto was in the U.S. Army Company C, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, better known as “The Big Red One.” As a 19-year-old soldier, the Normandy invasion was the first action he saw, as part of the second wave of troops to storm Omaha Beach. He is one of just two men in his company who survived the war from Normandy until the Czechoslovakian liberation in 1945 without being killed, wounded or captured. Mr. Moretto also fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Rep. Maloney also presented a certificate to Commissioner Holliday in honor of his late father, Roderick Holliday, who was a Corporal in the U.S. Navy and was present at the invasion of Normandy.

Rep. Maloney also presented service medals to Gerald Alperstein, a constituent and Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was presented with the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon and the Combat Action Ribbon. Mr. Alperstein is past legislative chair of the Jewish War Veterans and edits the organization’s publication.

Did you know there was a Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony today at Roosevelt Island's FDR Four Freedoms Park? Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and singer Carole King knew.

UPDATE 5/28 - Here's press release from Congresswoman Maloney's office:
On Monday, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY12) led a Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony Monday at Roosevelt Island’s Four Freedoms Park.

“I am so thrilled to be here for the very first Memorial Day Celebration and remembrance in this beautiful new park. My father served in World War II. My husband served in peacetime, in the Navy. And my brother was a veteran of the Vietnam War. So I know, firsthand, about the sacrifice that they and their families have made for our country. That is why we gather today, to express the thanks of a grateful nation,” said Congresswoman Maloney.

The wreath-laying ceremony was held to honor the military men and women who have bravely served the country, and to mark the first Memorial Day in Four Freedoms Park. The new park was developed, in part, with a $500,000 federal grant that Congresswoman Maloney secured. Congresswoman Maloney spoke near a large bust of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and praised President Roosevelt’s commitment to veterans.

“President Roosevelt understood how important it is to help the courageous men and women who return from war reintegrate into society, help them recover from the war, and earn a living. Those priorities are just as important today, with thousands of men and women returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan,” she said.

The park, which Congresswoman Maloney helped open in October 2012, is named after Roosevelt’s famous Four Freedoms Speech: The Freedom of Speech, the Freedom of Worship, the Freedom from Want and the Freedom from Fear.

Before giving the keynote address, Congresswoman Maloney was introduced by her close friend, music legend Carole King, who recently became the first woman to receive the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. “If you’re a woman, if you’re a first responder, or a veteran. If you’re a consumer or an investor. If you’re a survivor of Superstorm Sandy, or human-trafficking, or one of the many constituents she helps each and every day, you have a friend in Carolyn Maloney, and I am proud to say that she has a friend in me,” said King, before embracing Congresswoman Maloney.

Before resting a ceremonial wreath near the Roosevelt monument, Congresswoman Maloney thanked Sally Minard, Gina Pollara, and Ambassador Bill vanden Heuvel for all their work to develop and open the park. She also lauded the work of designer Louis Kahn.

It's also Fleet Week 2010 in New York City and our Sailors and Marines are enjoying all that NYC has to offer

including our very own Roosevelt Island. Yes, Fleet Week made it to Roosevelt Island and the Riverwalk Bar & Grill last Friday in the persons of FMF Corpsmen of the 2nd Marine Division
  • Nick Sollenberger,
  • Marc Petrine and
  • Andrew Whisner

I spoke with the Corpsmen (from Ohio, California and upstate New York) and asked how they found Roosevelt Island. They said they got lost on the subway trying to to get to Queens when they asked for assistance from another rider who suggested they follow him to Roosevelt Island where they would have a great time - and they did!

Interested in learning more about FMF Corpsmen? Here's some more information:
For seven boot camp-like, rifle-toting, blister-breaking weeks down south at Camp LeJeune, N.C., the Navy and Marine Corps team up at Field Medical Service School (FMSS) East to mold standard Navy-issue corpsmen into Sailors good enough for the Fleet Marine Force (FMF). The good ones will earn the Marines’ respect. The great ones earn the title, “Doc.”
“There are corpsmen and then there are ‘docs,’” said Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Richard Lister, an advisor at FMSS East. “A doc is someone you can count on. He’s someone in your platoon that when something happens to one of our fellow Marines, you can call on him and not have to worry. He’s your buddy, a comrade in arms, a person who you count on to cover your back, to lay down fire, dig fighting holes or do whatever the hell Marines are doing. That’s who a doc is.”...
