New York Junior Tennis & Learning Program At Roosevelt Island Is A Great Place To Learn The Game And Life Lessons Too - NYJT&L Staff And Kids Thank NYC Council Member Julie Menin For Support And Funding At The Octagon Tennis Court

According to New York Junior Tennis & Learning (NYJT&L):

The mission of New York Junior Tennis & Learning is to develop the character of young people through tennis and education for a lifetime of success on and off the court. For 50 years, NYJTL has changed lives through tennis and education. Today, it's the largest nonprofit youth tennis and education program in the nation, serving 85,000 K-12 NYC youth.

Arthur Ashe founded the National Junior Tennis League in 1969 with Charlie Pasarell, Ashe’s teammate at UCLA who devoted his life to building the game of tennis, and with Sheridan Snyder, a biotech entrepreneur with a passion for tennis. Ashe, to this day the only African American male player to have won the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, was committed not only to tennis but also to ensuring education and equity for all.

New York Junior Tennis League was founded in 1971 by Ashe and by Founder and Chairman Emeritus Lewis “Skip” Hartman with the help of Gene Scott, Bill Shelton, and Erich Werner. In 2013, the U.S. Tennis Association honored Skip with its National Junior Tennis and Learning Founders’ Service Award for 40 years of tireless efforts to grow junior tennis programs in NYC and around the country.

NYJT&L has managed free tennis programs on Roosevelt Island tennis courts for many years. Roosevelt Island resident Joyce Short is the long time Site Director for the Roosevelt Island program and several others in Manhattan and Queens.

Last May 23, Roosevelt Island and Upper East Side New York City Council Member Julie Menin visited the NYJT&L program at the Octagon Tennis Courts. She played some tennis displaying a strong forehand and backhand stroke as well as an approach to the net.

Council Member Menin was thanked by the kids and staff of NYJT&L at the Octagon Tennis Courts for her support and funding of the program.

Scott Daly, Senior Director of NYJT&L Community Tennis Programs explains the importance of NYC Council Funding for the program and Ms Short presented Council Member Menin with a certificate of appreciation.

Udai Tambar, Chief Executive Officer of NYJT&L joined with Ms Menin, Mr Daly and Ms Short to tell us more about the NYJT&L programs.

 Ms Short adds:

The NYJTL staff, administration, participants and parents are extremely grateful to Council Member Menin for supporting our community program. Anyone wishing to enroll children between the ages of 5 and 18 can do so online. We provide completely free support for the athletic, health, character, and educational development of our participants, reaching over 85,000 NYC kids each year. The only things you'll need to register are sneakers and a smile!

You can register here for the NYJT&L Roosevelt Island Summer Program at the Octagon Tennis Courts.

Joyce grew up before the 1972 Title IX legislation created equal opportunities for girls to participate in sports. She played tennis and competed in citywide tournaments as a one- and three-meter springboard diver in her hometown of Columbia, South Carolina. She was the City Champion in the 16-and-under category. But her high school had no varsity teams for girls. As a University of Georgia co-ed, she was only allowed to use the diving board in the “men’s pool,” two hours per week.

Today, Joyce relishes the opportunity to be a role model for all young people, but especially girls. “I hope that the fact that I’m here coaching as a female athlete will speak volumes to them about their potential,” she says....

at the Roosevelt Island Racquet Club. According to NYJTL:
NYJTL’s mission is to develop the character of young people through tennis and education for a lifetime of success on and off the court. Through tennis, academic enrichment, healthy living, and character development programs, NYJTL teaches life skills to underserved youth in New York City.

The experience and culture of tennis, along with academic support services, have helped hundreds of thousands of young people improve their performance in school and raise their aspirations, inspiring success both on and off the court.
Here's the NYJTL report on the President's Week Doubles Tournament:
The snow that blanketed New York City last Tuesday morning couldn’t stop nearly 50 excited youngsters from trekking to the Roosevelt Island Racquet Club for the first day of NYJTL’s Presidents’ Week Doubles tournament.

A total of 112 boys and girls, ages 9 to 18, from all across the city competed over the course of this three-day event, which was held during schools’ mid-winter break.

Each morning began at 6:30am with registration periods that NYJTL Community Tennis Programs Manager, Scott Daly, called “organized chaos.” After registration kids hit the courts each playing between four and six games in a round robin format. At the end of several hours of fun competition, the pairs who accumulated the most points in their groups were awarded winners’ medals.

For Shawn Yon, his son’s enjoyment of the game is the most important thing.

His son, also named Shawn, competed in the 9- and 10-year-old division. “My son loves the NYJTL program,” he said. “The coaches are great and they push him to get better. He’s fallen in love with tennis.”

Waking up early to play tennis is nothing new for these kids. They’re up before dawn every Saturday and Sunday morning to participate in NYJTL’s 20-week Winter Program at indoor venues throughout the city.

Presidents’ Week Doubles is one of 80 special events that the Community Tennis Programs will hold in 2015

NYC Council Member Ben Kallos Allocates Discretionary Funds To Roosevelt Island Organizations - Others Missed Application Deadline Out Of Luck For Now

The distribution of discretionary funds

Image From NY Post

by NYC Council Members was the subject of this DNA Info article yesterday:
...  Discretionary funds, distributed by Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, are given to each member with the intention of supporting local nonprofit organizations. Mark-Viverito overhauled the process for fiscal year 2015, which runs from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 — giving every council member $660,000, plus additional funds for representatives of more impoverished districts.

Each council member was given $400,000 in base funding, plus $110,000 for aging initiatives and $150,000 for youth programs. They were then allocated an extra $25,000, $50,000, $75,000 or $100,000 based on the poverty level in their district, as determined by 2012 American Community Survey data....
What Roosevelt Island nonprofit organizations received NYC Council discretionary funding? I asked Roosevelt Island/Upper East Side NYC Council member Ben Kallos:
I am preparing story on Roosevelt Island organizations that received NYC Council funding from the Kallos office and those that did not.

I am aware of these organizations that have received funding and amounts. Is the list accurate?

Roosevelt Island Seniors 30,000
ISLAND KIDS 15,000
Junior Tennis League 10,000
Child School 5,000
Four Freedoms Park 10,000

TOTAL $70,000

Did any other Roosevelt Island organization receive funding?

I suspect the Roosevelt Island Disabled Organization, Roosevelt Island Historical Society and Roosevelt Island Youth Program may not be happy being left out of funding.

I am also told that several organizations were not informed by your office about deadlines for applying for the funds....
A spokesperson for Mr. Kallos confirmed that the Roosevelt Island organization funding list above was correct and added that:
  • Roosevelt Island's PS 217 was granted $225,000 in capital funding and $20,000 in expense funding,
  • Bike New York was granted $5000 and Lenox Hill Neighborhood House $15,000, both of whom will use the funds in part for Roosevelt Island-specific programming and
  • Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts was granted $5,000.00 entirely for programming at PS 217.
Mr. Kallos adds:
We engaged in aggressive outreach via email blasts and phone calls to inform the Roosevelt Island and East Side communities about discretionary funding opportunities and deadlines. We funded every Roosevelt Island group that applied, and the amounts were equal to or more than the amounts they received last year. From what I know, Roosevelt Island Disabled Association, Roosevelt Island Historical Society, and Roosevelt Island Youth Program do valuable work serving the Roosevelt Island community, and I strongly encourage them to apply for funding next year.
Click here to view a chart showing how each NYC Council Member distributed their discretionary funds to local nonprofit organizations. According to the chart, Roosevelt Island organizations received funds for these purposes:
