RIVAA Gallery Artists Collaborating With Cornell Tech Students Remaking The City Class To Envision Future Look Of Roosevelt Island Architecture

I asked RIVAA Gallery:

Can you tell me more about the virtual reality project with Cornell Tech?

RIVAA Gallery artist Laura Hussey answered:

Tapan Parikh’s class, Remaking the City is envisioning what the architecture on Roosevelt Island might look like in the future based on the population, location and cultural diversity of Roosevelt Island.

Students will work in teams and design and build a physical model of their designs. A virtual reality model for viewing will then be created.

Five RIVAA artists will interact with the teams at specific times during the semester to give advice on how the projects are progressing from an aesthetic point of view and to make suggestions. This will allow the possibility for the students to envision their designs from a very different, non technical perspective and give them ideas they might wish to incorporate.

At the conclusion of the semester the students projects may be critiqued by RIVAA on a design basis and placed on display at RIVAA gallery.

When Will Citibike Docking Stations Come To Roosevelt Island - Who Knows, But Cornell Tech Students Developing Pilot Roosevelt Island Dockless Bike Sharing Project

A frequent Roosevelt Island question asked is:

Last weekend, I asked this group of Citibike riders visiting Roosevelt Island

where they got their Citibikes. They said from one of the many bike docking stations near their home in Long Island City and they asked why there was no docking station on Roosevelt Island, which they added, would be a perfect location.

Last month, I asked Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Public Information Officer Alonza Robertson:
Any info on Roosevelt Island getting Citibike stations?
Mr Robertson replied;
RIOC staff is holding off pursuing any bike share companies until all the Helix road construction, both lanes ..
are completed.

A group of Cornell Tech students are working on a pilot project to bring dockless bike sharing to Roosevelt Island and beyond.

The Wall Street Journal explains dockless bike sharing.

The Cornell Tech students developing a Roosevelt Island dockless bike sharing program are
  • Harrison Zhao
  • Owen Wang
  • Hanfu Liao
  • Jim Zhu
and report:
We have built our minimum variable product, which includes an emailing unlocking system and two bikes. The tasks we are working on right now is to build a Bluetooth distance sensor that will guide users to park the bikes at specific areas so that the bikes won't affect others. For our next step, we will do more user research and refine our product. We plan to buy more bikes and launch our product..... The product will be first open to Cornell Tech students, and then open to the public.

In term of our mission, we hope our product could benefit people on the island and other daily commuters and make short trips more convenient and affordable. Moreover, we wish, through our product, Cornell Tech and Cornell Tech students can better fit into the Roosevelt Island community.
This is how the dockless bike sharing would work on Roosevelt Island

and Long Island City.

The Roosevelt Island dockless bike sharing pilot project began as a student project for the Cornell Tech Remaking The City Class. Here is December 2017 presentation by the student team

to a group of Roosevelt Island residents and Cornell Tech faculty.

Currently, the closest Citibike docking stations to Roosevelt Island are in Long Island City and Astoria.

Cornell Tech Students Host Let's Eat RI To Promote Eating Locally At Roosevelt Island Restaurants As Part Of Remaking The City Class Project

Last Friday, Cornell Tech students Jennifer Ding, Cameron Boroumand and Will David (pictured below from left to right)

organized Let's Eat RI to introduce

Roosevelt Island restaurants

to the Cornell Tech community as part of their project in Professor Tapan Parikh's Remaking The City class trying to improve our local retail scene.

Mr Boroumand explained the purpose of Let's Eat RI:
... We've been given the task of improving retail on the Island. We thought that would be a great idea to try to bridge the gap between Cornell Tech student body and the Roosevelt Island community through food. We invited these 4 vendors to come in, We have Wholesome Factory, Riverwalk Bar & Grill, Piccolo and Bread & Butter. We brought them here to give the students a taste of what they have to offer so students are more aware of food options on the Island. This way we can promote the students to eat locally instead of taking the Tram over to Manhattan....

The Cornell Tech students also invited residents to Let's Eat RI and asked what is your favorite thing about Roosevelt Island. Answers including:
  • The Green Spaces,
  • View,
  • I love the Tram,
  • The Geese,
  • The Birds,
  • The Dogs
  • Serenity,
  • Sunsets,
  • Friendly people and more
were posted on this white board.

You're Invited To Let's Eat RI Presented By Cornell Tech Remaking The City Class Students Friday December 1 - Remaking The City Class Seeks To Make Roosevelt Island An Innovation Partner With Cornell Tech

Cornell Tech student Cameron Boroumand reports:

I am part of Tapan Parikh's Remaking the City class

My group is hosting an event at the Cornell Tech cafe with the goal of bridging our student body with the Roosevelt Island community. Multiple Roosevelt Island restaurants will be offering small treats so students can get a taste of the variety of foods the Island has to offer. We will also be playing Christmas music and hope to have some activities including arts and crafts at the event.

We’ve named the event “Let’s Eat RI” and will hold it this Friday (12/1) in the Cornell Tech cafe from 2-5pm. We’re hoping to attract people from all over Roosevelt Island.

Cornell Tech Remaking The City class professor Tapan Parikh is also a Roosevelt Island resident and a Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Common Council member.

According to the Remaking The City syllabus:
This workshop-based service learning course will engage students in participatory design projects that use technology to re-imagine community services and infrastructure in urban contexts. Teams of 2-3 students will be paired with individuals and organizations working on Roosevelt Island and elsewhere in the city, to learn and apply user-centered and participatory design methodologies towards important challenges facing the city and its inhabitants....
During the November 27 Roosevelt Island Cornell Tech Town Hall Meeting
Professor Parikh described his Remaking the City Course including these Roosevelt Island projects being worked on by the Cornell Tech students:
  • Garden Club Green Space Map application,
  • Main Street Theater & Dance Alliance web site revamping,
  • Roosevelt Island mapping for RIOC,
  • Web literacy for Seniors and the community,
  • Ride sharing for seniors to access medical services
  • Improving food and retail opportunities for Roosevelt Island
  • RIHS Logo and banner to represent new things happening on the Island
The goal of the class is to make Roosevelt Island an innovation partner with Cornell Tech.

Watch this video of Professor Parikh's full presentation on Remaking the City. It's fascinating.
