Roosevelt Island Celebrates 2024 Waterfront Alliance City Of Water Day At FDR Four Freedoms Park With iDig2Learn Describing The Amazing Aquatic Life On Our Shoreline

Last Saturday July 13, the Waterfront Alliance 17th annual City of Water Day was celebrated at over 60 locations on the New York and New Jersey waterfront. According to the Waterfront Alliance:

Dozens of communities across all five boroughs, Westchester and Rockland counties, and New Jersey will host events on and near the water that celebrate the importance of a resilient and equitably shared waterfront. From free kayaking to rowing to hands-on workshops, these events offer community members opportunities for fun, education, and access to their local waterfront....

2024 City of Water Day was celebrated at Roosevelt Island's FDR Four Freedoms Park too.

Roosevelt Island resident and iDig2Learn founder Christina Delfico together with FDR Four Freedoms Park Director Angela Strangenberg

shared information with park visitors

about the aquatic life

that can be found in the waters of NYC and Roosevelt Island shoreline.

Ms Delfico adds:

FDR Four Freedoms State Park and iDig2Learn wish to thank everyone who came out to celebrate the annual City of Water Day.

Most Roosevelt Islanders know that the East River flanking our shores is actually an estuary with brackish waters, a mix of salt water from the Atlantic Ocean and fresh water. That means we get interesting life that thrives in both types of waters.

The work of the Billion Oyster Project, which collects oyster shells from restaurants to serve as foundational beds for growing baby oysters, has now placed millions of pounds of live oysters in our waterways and they are filtering and cleaning the waters. Why does this matter? Cleaner waters mean more Bunker (Menhaden) fish, which means more dolphins and whales following and eating those fish.

Dolphins have been spotted in the East River and even seals. And Humpback whales love to eat Bunker fish too and now Gotham Whale teams up with Seastreak and other ships to offer whale watching trips here in New York and photographers identify individual whales. Both myself and also Angela Stangenberg, Park Director FDR Four Freedoms State Park and Gantry State Park in LIC, have seen Humpback whales in local waters, as close as beneath the Verrazano bridge.

At our Roosevelt Island City of Water Day celebration last Saturday, neighbors and visitors got to touch common algaes found in our waters like red algae, green algae called sea lettuce and Rockweed, a brown algae, with air bladders to help them float to capture sunlight for the photosynthesis. And the star of the touch table was the Bristle worm or clam worm commonly referred to as sand worm which lives 4 to five inches deep into the sand of the beach. They have sharp pinchers what looks like legs on each body segment which can be eight centimeters long. Water is amazing and we loved learning more together.

Take a look at some of the 2024 City Of Water Day celebrations taking place all over the NY and NJ coastal areas.

The Waterfront Alliance

... is working to provide more opportunities for people to get on and touch the water, as well as improve community engagement in waterfront development processes, leading to more equitable, healthy, and resilient coastal communities. Through different public forums, community board presentations, and one-on-one discussions, we seek to elevate the role of community-driven design and planning for waterfront public spaces and ensure that benefits of our waterways are accessible to all.

Matthew López-Jensen, Sarah Nelson Wright and Edrex Fontanilla, and Mary Mattingly (and contributing artists) will present three art installations at the future high tide line, or “BlueLine.” The works of art aim to illuminate the effects of sea level rise and coastal storms on the region. I asked the Waterfront Alliance City Of Water organizers:

Will there be any City of Water Day events on Roosevelt Island?

In the past, Roosevelt Island has not been part of City of Water Day. Why is that.

A Waterfront Alliance spokesperson replied:

We will be having an event at Roosevelt Island; please see the event details below.

Regarding why RI has not been part of City of Water Day in the past, that is because all events are organized by local communities, so it's up to local organizations to develop options.

We're so happy that RI will be included in this year's City of Water Day.

Roosevelt Island Residents Association Resolution Supporting East River Greenway Alliance Initiative To Bridge The 37 - 60th Street Waterfront Gap

East Coast Greenway Alliance Director Dennis Markatos-Soriano Addressing RIRA Meeting

During the Public Session of the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) April Common Council Meeting, representatives from the East River Greenway Alliance addressed the RIRA Council seeking support of the Roosevelt Island community to:
... create a well maintained, full length, world class waterfront esplanade and greenway similar to the Hudson River Greenway on the West Side of Manhattan. This includes a significant widening of the current Greenway in many places and connecting the gaps that still exist, especially the major gap that extends from East 37th Street to East 60th Street which creates an extremely dangerous situation for cyclists and other Greenway users

We are building a coalition of community stakeholders that supports closing the gap and improving the East River Greenway....

Elizabeth Brody, a Trustee of the East Coast Greenway Alliance was appreciative of RIRA's support and commented:
The ERGI is very grateful for the hospitable treatment RIRA accorded Dennis Markatos-Soriano, Executive Director of the East Coast Greenway Alliance, as he made his presentation in support of the resolution. He and I would be happy to answer any further questions or supply information.

NYC Vision 2020 Waterfront Planning Meeting Thursday April 8 - Help Plan The The Future Waterfront & Make Roosevelt Island's Voice Heard

Image of NYC Waterfront From Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance

As we are all aware, Roosevelt Island is located between Manhattan and Queens, surrounded by water, in the East River. If you are interested in learning about and helping to plan the future of New York City's waterfront, including Roosevelt Island, this message from the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance is for you.
Help Plan the City’s Waterfront

The Department of City Planning is currently preparing Vision 2020: The NYC Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, and we want your help. This plan will establish the city’s long range vision for a 21st Century waterfront, identifying opportunities for improvement and the strategies needed to realize this new vision. Visit our website, www.nyc.gov/waterfront, for plan updates, workshop announcements and to share your ideas and comments with us.

A kick-off citywide public meeting to discuss the process and solicit feedback will be held on:

APRIL 8, 2010
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
MURRY BERGTRAUM HIGH SCHOOL
411 PEARL STREET
LOWER MANHATTAN
Here's an excerpt from MWA's excellent City of Water Documentary

It's important that Roosevelt Island residents participate in this process and get involved because so often waterfront advocates and decision makers are unaware of our issues so they do not get addressed.

2008 New York City Waterfront Alliance Action Conference Tomorrow November 13 - Come Make A Difference

Image of Waterfront Alliance members

Being completely surrounded by the East River makes New York City waterfront development, transportation, environmental and recreation issues of prime importance to Roosevelt Island residents. A great organization that works to make the New York City waterfront a better place, while attempting to balance often competing interests, is the Waterfront Alliance, formerly known as the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance. According to their mission statement:
The Waterfront Alliance works to transform the New York and New Jersey Harbor and Waterways to make them cleaner and more accessible, a vibrant place to play, learn and work with great parks, great jobs and great transportation for all.

The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance envisions a New York and New Jersey harbor and waterways alive with commerce and recreation; where sailboats, kayaks and pleasure craft share the waterways with commuter ferries, barges and container ships; where beautiful, cared-for parks are connected by affordable waterborne transit; where there are dozens of exciting waterfront destinations that reflect the vitality and diversity of the great metropolis that surrounds it; a waterfront that is no longer walled off by highways and rails, or by private luxury residences; a waterfront that is a shared precious resource and is accessible to all. MWA will be a leadership organization that will make this vision real for our region.
Tomorrow, November 13, the Waterfront Alliance will be conducting a day long Waterfront Conference and request that:
Please join us for the...
