Build and Fly Kites at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park

Free Event, All Ages Welcome

On Saturday, September 22, visitors are invited to build and fly kites at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in celebration of International Peace Day.

On this weekend, Four Freedoms Park Conservancy educators will lead free, drop-in kite-making workshops for visitors of all ages. Acclaimed kiteflier Archie Stewart of the American Kitefliers Association will provide interactive kite-flying demonstrations from 12pm – 4pm on Saturday.

Roosevelt Island Public Library will host storytime sessions at 12pm, 1pm, and 2pm, as well as giveaways and arts and crafts activities.

In partnership with Operation Gratitude, visitors will be invited to share their messages of gratitude with Deployed Troops, Veterans, New Recruits & First Responders at our special letter writing station: Letters of Gratitude.

Registration is recommended

Kite-making supplies will be provided.

All ages welcome.

The Roosevelt Island FDR Four Freedoms Park (FDR Park) invites you to Build and Fly A Kite to honor International Peace Day and the UN General Assembly. According to the FDR Park:

Saturday, September 23
11am – 4pm

Drop-in to our free kite-making workshops on Saturday at FDR Four Freedoms Park and build your own kite as part of Roosevelt Island's Fall for Arts Festival! In honor of International Peace Day and the UN General Assembly, design your kites with symbols of freedom and peace and then fly them on the great lawn.

12pm – 4pm: Free kite-flying demonstration by acclaimed kite-flier Archie Stewart.
12pm – 1pm: Roosevelt Island branch Library and author Marie Letourneau present a special storytime session at the Park.
1pm – 1:30pm: Real life stories from human rights heroes relating the four freedoms to today’s time.

Activities are free and suitable for all ages. Registration is recommended; drop-in between 11am and 4pm.

Make your own kite during our drop-in kite-making workshop for all ages in the Park's programming tent; kite flying on lawn. Workshop will be led by our Education Department. We will also be hosting an interactive kite flying demonstration on the park lawn from 1pm-5pm by Archie Stewart, a member of the American Kitefliers Association. (Rain date: Sunday, September 27th)

In recognition of the United Nations General Assembly and International Peace Day, visitors are invited to fly kites at the park all week long. On Wednesday, September 23, Thursday, September 24, and Saturday, September 26, visitors will have the opportunity to design and fly their own special kite, selecting stripes, colors, and symbols that represent their personal ideas about peace and freedom.

Roosevelt Island Kite Building And Flying Workshop At FDR Four Freedoms Park Sunday May 18 - Space Limited, First Come First Served

You're invited to a Build and Fly Kites Workshop at Roosevelt Island's Four Freedoms Park.

Please join Four Freedoms Park Conservancy this Sunday, May 18th, 11:00am to 3:00pm to build and fly kites at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park!

Artist Miguel Luciano will lead free, 90 minute workshops centered on Carribean kite traditions. Participating children and their families will produce handmade kites, personalizing them with text and graphics to form poems and personal statements in the sky as they explore ideas of flying, freedom and community.

Workshop space is limited and participation will be on a first come, first served basis at the following times: 11am-12:30pm / 1pm-2:30pm.

Tushevs Aeriels, a specialist in aerial footage capture, will document the kites in flight with one of their home-built remote-control video airplanes.

Enjoy a leisurely paddle from Hallets Cove (Vernon Blvd at 31st Ave) to our Anable Basin boathouse (46-01 5th St). Please note that this is a one way trip that ends two miles south of where it begins. Actual time on water should be approximately 75 minutes.
