Roosevelt Island Summer Jobs Available for High School Graduates and College Students - Get Those Applications in Fast

You Tube Video on How Economy Effects Roosevelt Island Teens

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President Leslie Torres May 6 report indicated:
...We are Hiring To help keep this Island beautiful throughout the summer, RIOC is once again recruiting for temporary summer staff positions. These opportunities are perfect for college students and graduating high school seniors. The minimum age requirement is 17 years. The positions will run from May 16th through September 9th, 2011.

We have several positions to be filled in a variety of departments, and are looking for hard working, energetic and upbeat candidates. Some of the work will be manual, and most will require working outdoors for the duration of the summer. Prior experience in gardening, cleaning, construction or manual labor is a plus, but not necessary.

We encourage Roosevelt Island’s student residents to apply. Interested candidates may apply through the Youth Center, by dropping a resume off at RIOC’s administrative office at 591 Main Street during business hours, or by e-mailing a resume to HRStaffing@RIOC.com.
I sent the following inquiry to Ms. Torres yesterday.
I understand from your most recent President's report that RIOC will be hiring high school graduates and college students for summer jobs on Roosevelt Island.

Can you provide any additional details as to how this process will work and the hiring procedures.

There was a concern expressed last year by some Directors that any RIOC summer jobs on Roosevelt Island give priority to Roosevelt Island residents over family, friends, relatives of RIOC, other State agencies or anyone else.

Can you advise how many summer jobs are available and if local Roosevelt Island residents will be given priority.
Earlier this morning, RIOC's Director of Human Resources replied:
In response to your e-mail inquiry to RIOC President, Leslie Torres regarding the hiring of seasonal workers, please be advised that RIOC follows all Federal, State and local equal employment guidelines when recruiting for all available positions.

There is no preferential hiring nor are positions held for any persons. All applicants who meet the requirements of the available positions are given equal opportunity. In the case of RIOC’s seasonal hiring, young people meeting the requirements from all over New York City and State are interviewed and several are subsequently offered positions.

RIOC uses various sources for recruiting to maximize the pool of available applicants, including those available on Roosevelt Island.
I responded:
Thanks for the response and here's a follow up.

I understand that RIOC must comply with all federal, state and local hiring laws and that if Federal, State and/or City money is being used to pay for seasonal summer workers then the opportunity to be hired for the jobs should be open to everyone.

However, if the funds for these seasonal summer jobs comes solely through RIOC, why should Roosevelt Island high school graduates and college students not get priority over others?

If the funds for the Roosevelt Island summer jobs comes from RIOC, is it legal to give priority to Roosevelt Island residents? If it is legal, why would RIOC not give such priority to Roosevelt Island young people?

Also, can you advise how many positions are available.
followed by RIOC's Human Resources Director:
Please be assured that RIOC's intention is to afford these employment opportunities to the most qualified candidates possible.  Whether they be RI residents or otherwise.  We fully intend to employ those RI residents who apply for and meet the minimum qualifications of the positions available.

The total number of positions is approximately 20.
If you are a Roosevelt Island High School graduate or college student looking for a summer job, get those applications in fast.

Report From RIOC President Leslie Torres - Roosevelt Island Ground Maintenance Crews Busy, Electric Car Charging Stations Coming, Street Parking, Pianos, Summer Youth Jobs (Get Those Applicatations In) & More

Image of Roosevelt Island Grounds Maintenance at Firefighters Field

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President Lesie Torres sends the following report to Roosevelt Island residents.
The Island is finally in full bloom, and it looks gorgeous.

RIOC’s ground maintenance crews have been busy at work strengthening and conditioning the soil to promote healthier and greener lawns. They have also been caring for the tree pits island wide, increasing the supply of nutrients to the tree roots. All products used are environmentally friendly.

Following up on my comments about green initiatives in the March 26th column, we are pursuing opportunities to realize these projects. Jonathan Kalkin, a member of the RIOC Board of Directors, has taken an active interest in this development, and played a lead role in exploring a pathway to make electric car charging stations available. We have just received notice from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (“NYSERDA”) that a grant for partial funding of this initiative has been awarded. The installation of charging stations for six vehicles at Motorgate is expected to be complete by this fall.

We are also upgrading street parking. You may have noticed that we have installed new parking meters along West Drive, from the back of the building at 405 Main Street to the back of the building at 475 Main Street. These meters are part of a test pilot to determine the best parking meter technology for the Island. The installation process should be complete shortly. We will have information about fee structure and a user’s guide available on our website and Facebook page.

We are Hiring To help keep this Island beautiful throughout the summer, RIOC is once again recruiting for temporary summer staff positions.

We encourage Roosevelt Island’s student residents to apply. Interested candidates may apply through the Youth Center, by dropping a resume off at RIOC’s administrative office at 591 Main Street during business hours, or by e-mailing a resume to HRStaffing@RIOC.com.

Cherry Blossom Festival Showcases Island’s Beauty, Community Fun I had the pleasure this past weekend of attending the Roosevelt Island Cherry Blossom Festival. It was a great event for a great cause: all proceeds from the festival, including the food and beverage sales, will be donated to the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund supporting the March 11th earthquake survivors in Japan. RIOC, the Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA), the Japanese Association of Roosevelt Island and the Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association (RIVAA) also joined together to dedicate a cherry grove to
the people of Japan.

Congratulations to Lynne Shinozaki, Sherie Helstien, and the rest of the RIRA team for putting together such a wonderful event for our community and supporting our Japanese neighbors and their loved ones
in Japan.

This is the second year for the outdoor piano program, which encourages amateurs and artists alike to create impromptu concerts.

Summer 2010 Jobs Available For New York City Youth On Roosevelt Island - How Does Economy Effect Roosevelt Island Teens?

You Tube Video On How Economy Effects Roosevelt Island Teens

I noticed a Craigslist ad offering Summer jobs opportunities for New York City youth with the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp. (RIOC) and asked RIOC President Steve Shane if the ad was accurate. Mr. Shane replied:
As we have every year, in conjunction with the Youth Center, we try to hire "seasonals" to perform some of the outdoors type tasks (mowing, trash collection, etc.) which expand during the summer. Fill in for vacation time, etc., without expansion of the permanent unionized cadre. A way to give young people some entry into the temporary work force. I will refer you to Claudia Mcdade who administers the program for any further specifics. I've seen a whole boatload of young people here for interviews, mostly freshly scrubbed and reasonably properly dressed.
The jobs pay $15 per hour. From Craigslist:

RIOC Has Summer Jobs Available For Roosevelt Island Students - Get Your Applications In

You Tube Video of Roosevelt Island Recession

I noticed that RIOC had a Summer Jobs listing on Craigslist and inquired of RIOC President Steve Shane:
There is a posting on the Craigslist jobs board dated 5/12 indicating that summer jobs for NYC students as grounds keepers and maintenance workers were available through RIOC. I did not see anything about this on the RIOC web site and was wondering if the summer job opportunities listing was accurate and still available?
Mr Shane had RIOC's Director of Human Resources reply:
The posting on Craigslist is accurate, and yes, we still have positions available for both seasonal Grounds and Maint. workers.. The post will be up on our website soon.
I hope this answers your questions.
Good News! Summer jobs information for Roosevelt Island students is now available on the RIOC web site:

Roosevelt Island Teens On The Recession and What They Want To Be When They Grow Up - Will There Be Summer Jobs Available To Them?

You Tube Video of Roosevelt Island Recession

Roosevelt Island teens discuss jobs, the economy and recession.

Very nicely done!

As I was walking past PS/IS 217 the other day, I noticed this sign for Summer Jobs through the Roosevelt Island Youth Program. Unfortunately, according to the sign, the deadline for applying for these jobs has passed - May 8 and there is no further information on these jobs at the RI Youth Program web site.

Governor Patterson announced last week that some of the money from the Federal Stimulus Funds would be used to increase the number of summer jobs available for New York State and City teenagers. According to the NY Times:
...Citing the soaring unemployment rate among New York teenagers and young adults, state and city officials announced on Saturday that money from the federal stimulus program would be used to expand the number of summer jobs.

Gov. David A. Paterson said $18.5 million would be directed to the city so it can offer 51,000 jobs, an increase of 8,000 from last year.

“Spring is job-hunting season,” said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who joined Mr. Paterson and other elected officials at a news conference in Midtown Manhattan to provide details of the jobs program. “But as we know, these are not the best of times when it comes to landing work.”...
Let's hope that some of that stimulus money for Summer Youth Jobs comes to Roosevelt Island so that these kids can work and earn some money.
