I really dig the new Gristedes. I also see an "upgrade" in staff. It was a very pleasant experience yesterday. The renovations are not quite done, though. The exit door is still being worked on.

i am very happy there is a shoppers bus . so many of us are not forced to be ripped off by this owner who wants to be mayor.

I noticed that they're lowering a lot of prices. i hope this isn't just for the grand opening. I'm willing to give them a chance.

Yes Joe - and we must stay alert to any possibility that the shoppers bus may be curtailed, as I think Kramer was thinking of doing when he first took over the Master Lease.

Billionaire John Catsimatides has donated 20G to the Manhattan Republican Party, and since he's also backed by the Queen Republican Party, he now gets into the Republican primary. party Despite his money, Catsimatides has nothing going for him personality-wise - does not even have a patina of couth or ideas and will get little support from most Republicans, even if he has enough money to buy them all off twice. He's a successful businessman but personally repulsive and unpleasant.

Republicans (or a faction of them) anyway may have their new "analog" of a progressive-seeming Republican a la Rudy Giuliani - Joe Lhota, the recently-resigned transit chief who just gave us the fare raise.. Lhota gets props for putting the subway system back together again in record time after Sandy. However, he seems to be a dud in other respects. Check this story out of Lhota flopping in his first Mayoral candidate panel appearance
So, it remains to be seen how strong a horse Lhota will be - clearly, he has no knack for politics, but then again, he's a political novice, a technocrat with no electoral experience. Lhota also bombed in Staten Island, causing the SI Republican eminence grise Guy Molinari to actually endorse Democratic politician running as unaffiliated indepedent Adolfo Carrion
Nevertheless, the "Godfather" of NYC Republicans - Marty Golden - has endorsed - not Catsimatides, but you guessed it, Joe Lhota,

The above articles give you an idea of the political pirouettes/positioning of various candidates to get support, and into the primaries and so forth.

Further to the Carrion fusion candidacy: Because most believe Quinn will win both the Democratic primary and probably the Mayoral election, Democratic politician Adolfo Carrion, former Bronx BP and Obama official, is now running as unaffiliated on Bloomberg's Independence Party line. Since he has also won the endorsement of the Brooklyn and Bronx Republican committees he will be in the Republican Mayoral primary on an Independence-Republican line nonetheless

Considering the field of Republican Mayoral hopefuls, those Republicans backing Democratic politician Adolfo Carrion aren't stupid; Adolfo Carrion, the only Latino running, is certain to bring the at least 20% Latino voting bloc. Carrion, a powerful Democratic politician of the center, seems to mirror some of Bloomberg's thinking, and might be a logical choice of the Republican Party in NYC to challenge Quinn. If he wins, it would be interesting to see if he would actually continue his current kabuki Bloomberg "pantomime". Politics make strange bedfellows! It will be an interesting Mayoral primary.. but I doubt if Catsimatides, for all his millions, will be on the ballot in November..

They are also much better stocked. On Sunday, I was able to plan a meal, write up a shopping list and actually buy everything on the list -- the first time I've been able to do that in many years. I hope they improve the cheese selection. It's only a little better than it used to be. I haven't done any serious price comparisons, but yesterday, I noticed that 2 lbs. of organic sugar were only 20 cents more than the same amount at Trader Joe's. If they continue this way, people will actually shop there, but if people continue to stay away, they will gradually revert to long shelves full of nothing but bottled water.

when they became a superstore a few years ago . the frist few weeks the prices were low just to get people in as they were trying to fool everyone but then after a few weeks it was back to the same high prices so i am sure this will be the same .long live the shoppers bus.

That's what I expect. I don't use the shoppers bus, but I do go to Trader Joe's, the Union Square Greenmarket, especially in the warmer months, as well as Citarella, all of which are easily accessible via the F train (except during the annoying weekend shutdowns.) I would love to live someplace where I could count on my local supermarket, but, hey, this is Roosevelt Island, where we don't even have a liquor store, so, while I'm taking advantage of the momentary decrease in prices and improved stock, I don't expect either the prices to stay down or the stock to be replenished. Also, I've noticed, that among the new, fresh merchandise, there are still some outdated bottles and cans of this and that, sometimes greatly reduced (for that reason.) Shopper, beware.

There's a party going on! Lots of free samples, some of which are good! The store is well-stocked and looks nice. Many of the items are lower in price than they were in the past -- sometimes down to normal. I hope they keep it up.
