Roosevelt Island Residents Are Invited To Join The Manhattan Park Pool And Swim Club - Opens Saturday May 28, Fees Are Same For Roosevelt Island Residents

It sure feels like summer today and with the upcoming Memorial Day weekend temperatures expected to be in the high 80's, it's good to know that the Manhattan Park Pool, Swim Club and Sun Deck opens for the season on Saturday May 28.

The Manhattan Park Pool Membership Fee Schedule is below. Fees are the same for Roosevelt Island residents. Non-Roosevelt Island residents pay more.

Contact Manhattan Park for more information and to join the Swim club at 212.759.8660 or info@manhattanpark.com

As reported last week, the Manhattan Park Swim Club initially listed higher fees for non-Manhattan Park Roosevelt Island residents to join than for Manhattan Park residents.

Frank Farance did some research and discovered a provision in the Manhattan Park ground lease with the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) which appears to require Manhattan Park Pool membership fees not to be based upon which Roosevelt Island building a resident lives in.  The revised Manhattan Park Pool fee schedule shown above was issued shortly thereafter.

Good job by Mr. Farance digging into this issue and good job by Manhattan Park revising it's Pool Fee policy.

Artist Hot Tea Creates Swimming Asylum Public Art Project At Roosevelt Island's Manhattan Park Pool - See It From Above

On a typical summer day, the Roosevelt Island Manhattan Park outdoor pool looks like this.

On occasion, it is transformed to resemble a Miami Vice party.

Currently, the street artist Hot Tea has created a colorful Public Art project using the Manhattan Park pool.

According to Brooklyn Street Art, Hot Tea says of the Roosevelt Island Manhattan Park Pool project:
... “This piece is inspired by my color field installations that take up both private and public spaces. I love introducing color to spaces that seem neglected or forgotten.”

Once the home of an asylum, the island is still a quasi secret getaway that just happens to lie in the plain view of Manhattan and Queens. Because of its location and its history, the artist says he has felt that the pool project has summoned both associations of a place to escape to and a place where mental states are out of balance....

Roosevelt Island Outdoor Swimming At Manhattan Park and Octagon Buildings - Indoor Swimming Pools Available Too

The NY Times reported today on outdoor swimming pools in Manhattan residential buildings:

LIKE iced tea, perhaps, or casual Fridays, outdoor pools are in many minds forever linked with summer. After all, the sensation of sun on wet skin after a few dips in the deep end just about sums up the season.

But that pleasure is denied to most apartment-dwellers in New York City. If their building has a pool at all, it is probably of the enclosed kind.

Of the approximately 150 pools in residential buildings in Manhattan, only about 15 are outside, according to the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; some of those 15 are in private town houses....
Roosevelt Island's two outdoor swimming pools were not mentioned in the article. At Manhattan Park

and the Octagon.

The Manhattan Park pool is open to anyone who joins the Pool Club. The Octagon Pool is only for those who live in the building and their guests.

Roosevelt Island indoor swimming pools are also available at the Rivercross and Westview buildings as well as in Sportspark.

More on Roosevelt Island swimming from the RI Marlins and these previous posts.

UPDATE 8/9 - According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC), the Westview Pool is open to all Roosevelt Island residents with pool memberships but the Rivercross pool is only open to building residents.

Hogging the Beach Chair at Manhattan Park Pool

Who would have thought that a post about a new Roosevelt Island swimming blog would have struck such a chord. A reader unhappy with the Manhattan Park Pool comments:

... I would just like to comment on the Manhattan Park Pool. I live in Manhattan Park and I was a member of the pool Summer of 2006. My husband and I considered the price to be outrageous but since it was our first summer on the island we decided to give it a try. We both work and do not arrive home until 7pm or later so we only used it on the weekends. Our experience was beyond disappointment. If you did not arrive at the moment it opened you could not find a lounger. Many people would claim a chair with their towel, swim for an hour and then go home and expect to come back to that same chair. This summer we considered joining again but due to the insane cost (no pool club in Manhattan costs as much) we decided to forgo the membership and go out of town for the weekends. I understand that the management has added more lounge chairs which is great but if the fee for a couple is more than $500USD for essentially which may amount to 24 days a season we will not be taking a membership again next summer. Manhattan Park has turned out to be much much more expensive than what we were told when we first moved here. That topic is probably better for a new blog topic completely.
It is unfortunate that this issue has arisen at the end of the summer. Perhaps by highlighting this issue now changes can be made in time for the pool season next summer. Link to the image is here.
