Roosevelt Island Residents Joyce Short And Mark Block Running For NY Democratic Party State Committee With Support Of Top State Party Leadership - Oppenents Erica Vladimer & Jeremy Berman Claim That's A Problem

Roosevelt Island residents Joyce Short and Marc Jonas Block are running for the NY Democratic Party State Committee for the 76 Assembly District which represents Roosevelt Island and the Upper East Side. 

According to Ms Short:

Each State Assembly District gets 2 Committee Members, a man and a woman. Voting for Marc and for me helps Roosevelt Island have two duly elected committee members who actually live in our community. We have never had one in the almost 47 years I've lived on Roosevelt Island. I believe that contributes to Roosevelt Island's needs being overlooked by NY State's government.

Being an elected State Committee Member is a political policy, not a government position. But it has a significant affect on government. They are tasked with a number of influential priorities:

• Oversight for campaign spending 
• Creating the Democratic Party's platform in NY State 
• Selecting National Democratic Committee Members 
• Providing endorsements for candidates throughout NY State 
• Oversight over the party's Ethics Code 
• Encouraging political activism

As the present Committeewoman has stated, the party's established leaders have long seen the party's treasury as their campaign's piggy bank. In principle, however, those funds are raised to support new-comers with fresh ideas who will grow the future of the democratic party. As a senior, I recognize how important it is to be able to pass the baton to the next generation of leaders.

Among a host of other issues, I'd like to make sure the Democratic Party addresses two important things.....

1. No residential community in NY State should ever be deprived of democratic government. Our legislators throughout NY State have either turned a blind eye, or are unaware of this situation on Roosevelt Island. I intend to change that.
2. I have long fought for changes in our laws to conquer the pandemic of sexual assault, sex trafficking and domestic violence. Legislators have ignored the transformational changes that are needed. I aim to change that as well.

Residents in any Assembly District can impact government through Democratic Clubs. We don't have one on Roosevelt Island. I believe we need to change that. Any resident who would like to take part in the formation of a Democratic Club for Roosevelt Island can contact me at jm_short@ymail.com.

I spoke with Ms Vladimer and Mr Berman recently at the Roosevelt Island Farmers Market.

Supporters of Ms Vladimer and Mr Berman have gone to Twitter to attack the fundraising of Ms Short and Mr Block.

This is such a complete and utter disgrace that goes so far beyond this one State Committee race. It's unbelievable how thoroughly rotten the NYS Democratic Party leadership is, and how completely infiltrated with Republican saboteurs.

Mr. Block responds: 

The referenced tweet is nothing more than an attempt to fabricate an issue that does not exist. Joyce and I, in compliance with election laws, made disclosures of contributions received by our campaigns. There is nothing nefarious with compliance with disclosure laws, support by party leadership or raising campaign capital. The merits of our campaigns are supported by knowledgeable folks who understand the far reach of the positions for which we are campaigning.

The claims are ludicrous, including the idea that the Democratic Party of New York is controlled by the Republican Party. If the tweeter was serious, they should have checked their facts including how to spell my name.

The truth of the matter is that Joyce and I are both long-time residents with strong community ties. We are serious about this election.

Ms Short responds:

State Committee members are entrusted with policy making for the entire State, even though we're elected district by district. Similarly, when I served as RIRA's Secretary and Government Relations Chair for many years, although Common Council members were elected by our individual building's residents, we served for the common good of the community.

NY State Committee Members also impact the National Democratic Committee, hence interest from outside NY State. There's no surprise that a knowledgeable person, who recognizes the far-reaching role of NYS Democratic Committee Members, supports Marc and I.

One of the many reasons we're running for Committee positions is to provide Roosevelt Islanders with a seat at an important political table where we've never had a voice. Being acknowledged by a party leader is evidence that our voices are welcomed and and that Marc and I have already made an impact.

Marc Block and I are running for NY State Democratic Party Committeewoman and Democratic Committeeman for the 76th Assembly District. We need the community’s help! 

Right now, we are petitioning to get on the ballot and need signatures. The petitioning is due the beginning of April. We have very little time!  

Tonight, we are holding a petition-signing event at the Sr. Center- at 546 Main Street, from 5:30 to 9:30.  

Our election will put Roosevelt Island on the political map of NY State! History has shown us that without Island representatives who can input the policies and platform of the Democratic party, Roosevelt Island’s interests are overlooked. We aim to change that. I’m Adam Roberts, a candidate for Democratic State Committee in the 76th district.

Though only 26 years old, I’ve built up a great amount of public service experience over the past decade. This includes, working for Council Member Ben Kallos, producing a documentary for PBS, working for UJA-Federation, and serving as the Democratic District Leader for Yorkville.

As Democratic State Committee Member, I’d represent Roosevelt Island and the Upper East Side. The Democratic State Committee is the governing body of the New York State Democratic Party. Responsibilities of the Democratic State Committee include determining the party’s platform and positions, which races resources are allocated to, who our Democratic National Committee (DNC) Members are, and who the party endorses in statewide races.

Right now, the New York State Democratic Party needs to undergo major changes. Corruption in Albany is rampant, while the state party is disorganized and ineffective. This is all to the detriment of Roosevelt Island.

We need to make sure the Democratic Party works for Roosevelt Island. A fractured and corrupt party hinders the passage of important legislation regarding those issues most important to Roosevelt Island. Improvements in affordable housing, transportation, and healthcare all get stalled because of widespread corruption and disorganization.

We need the Democratic State Committee to stand up to bad actors and hold them accountable. Myself and Lauren Trapanotto, my running mate, are seeking to reform the New York State Democratic Party. If elected, I’ll fight for the State Committee to:

• Clean up corruption in Albany
• Make the Democratic Party more progressive
• Build up local Democratic organizations
• Stay neutral in Democratic primaries
• Allow for the election of DNC Members
• Investigate corruption and sexual harassment

We need change in Albany for Roosevelt Island to prosper. Most crucially, we need new leadership to make these changes. In the Democratic Primary on Thursday, September 13, please be sure to vote for me, Adam Roberts, and my running mate Lauren Trapanotto.

Meet Lauren Trapanotto, NY State Democratic Party Committee Candidate For 76 Assembly District Including Roosevelt Island - Aims To Drive Change And Bring Reform To The Dems

The Democratic Party is divided into three levels, with elected representatives at the National, State, and County Committees. 

I am a candidate for the New York State Democratic Committee in the 76th Assembly District, which includes Roosevelt Island. The election will be held on Thursday, September 13 on the Democratic Primary ballot.

My name is Lauren Trapanotto

and I am running to represent Roosevelt Island on the Democratic Party's State Committee. I am running because I believe our Party has failed to live up to its values, and that Democratic voters are taken advantage of by politicians who know that progressives have few other options on election day. If elected, I will be the advocate we need, working to break the hold establishment figures have and pushing the Party to take a stronger stance against bad actors in Albany.

The State Committee has the potential to meaningfully shape the political landscape here in New York for the better, but has served mostly as a rubber stamp for incumbent bosses in Albany seeking to maintain control. It is responsible for overseeing campaign spending, writing the Party’s platform, and selecting Democratic National Committee Members. The Committee can also “fast track” its favored candidates onto the September primary ballot - as it did in the governor’s race earlier this year - allowing them to avoid the expensive and time consuming statewide petitioning process.This all affects how the Party operates and when done behind closed doors can end up biasing our elections.

Last year, as part of a grassroots effort to break insiders’ hold on the Democratic Party, I became a member of the Democratic County Committee and helped kick off a broad reform movement to open up the Party and limit the role of lobbyists and consultants in the leadership. We will be voting on the proposed reforms later this summer. If elected to the State Committee I intend to do the same in Albany, fighting to prevent the Party leadership from treating our campaign fund like a piggy bank and ensuring the Party remains neutral in primary elections at all levels until voters have chosen our nominee. I am proud to be supported in the race by the Four Freedoms Democratic Club, which has been at the forefront of the movement to clean up our Party and is engaging progressive activists right here in the 76th AD.

I am running against a 20-plus year incumbent, but I am confident in my chances, because I know what most of you know: that the Democratic Party in New York needs change. I want to be the driver for that change, and I hope I'll have your support.
