at the Manhattan Park Theater Club about the recent arrest  of waterfront promenade shooting suspect.

Deputy Inspector Nunes tried to put the assembled residents at ease initially by reporting that statistically, Roosevelt Island:

... is probably the safest part of the 114 precinct...

before talking about the shooting suspect. According to Deputy Inspector Nunes:

... The individual was arrested. He was arraigned in Manhattan court. Bail was set. He is out.

He lives on this Island. I don't think we will have any more problems from him.  He does have an extensive arrest history. 17 priors. Some of them are violent, robberies and such.

He does belong to a crew. A crew is interchangeable with a gang. I refer to them as crews because gangs are a little bigger. ...  Crews are usually more local, they cover a couple of blocks. There is one crew we track on this Island but is largely inactive....

Deputy Inspector Nunes said the the suspect was trying to impress his girlfriend by firing the gun which has not been recovered.

UPDATE 8/28 - More Q&A with Deputy Inspector Nunes - there were six calls of gunshots heard on Roosevelt Island this year. 5 were unfounded, fireworks or some other loud noise. (No microphones were used so some audience questions are difficult to hear but the responses from Deputy Inspector Nunes are loud and clear)

will address the Roosevelt Island community tomorrow, Monday 8.27.18; regarding last week's random shootings and subsequent arrest of a suspect - at the Manhattan Park Community Room at 7 p.m.

Arrested - Roosevelt Island Resident Surrenders To NYPD 114 Precinct Early This Morning And Admits Firing Gunshots At Upper East Side Building From Waterfront Promenade

According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):

NYPD and PSD Chief Jack McManus announced early Friday morning that 22-year-old Roosevelt Island resident Farris Koroma surrendered to authorities at the 114th Precinct in Astoria. He admitted to being the suspect wanted in last week's random shootings at a Manhattan luxury high-rise apartment building. He was charged with reckless endangerment, possession of a weapon and criminal mischief.

A tipster reported gunshots were heard in the vicinity of Roosevelt Island's Manhattan Park building complex at 30 River Road early Saturday morning.

Today, I asked the Manhattan Park building management:

Any comment from Manhattan Park management regarding the NYPD investigation of gunshots believed to have come from Manhattan Park?...

... I've heard comments from residents who are very concerned about security precautions, or lack thereof, at Manhattan Park including background checks on occupants. Also residents have complained about what they say are many illegally divided apartments with a rotation of temporary occupants.

A Manhattan Park Spokesperson replied:

In response to the recent news reports, please know that the safety and security of our residents is our first priority.

Manhattan Park Management is cooperating fully with NYPD detectives during their investigation which is ongoing. We are coordinating with NYPD for them to conduct an informational session for residents at the Manhattan Park Theater Club.

We are making every effort to ensure the safety and security of our residents is addressed. After consulting with our security advisors, we have directed our security firm to add additional roving security personnel on an interim basis, while NYPD is conducting their investigation.

No further comment as this is an open police investigation.

I’ve received reports that gunshots were heard at Manhattan Park by residents last Friday night/Saturday morning and that PSD and NYPD officers investigated.

Residents of a swanky Upper East Side high-rise have 24-hour gated entry, a heated indoor pool, breathtaking views of the river — and bullets whizzing through their windows.

A mystery gunman is shooting up apartments at One East River Place from clear across the water on Roosevelt Island, law enforcement sources told The Post....

... Cops were puzzled by the source of the gunfire until they realized the timing of the second shooting matched up with two 911 calls reporting shots heard coming from another apartment building — about 1,400 feet across the East River on Roosevelt Island, sources said.
