Roosevelt Island Resident Fed Up With Pigeon Poop At Motorgate Garage - Wants Action From RIOC To Clean Up The Mess

Roosevelt Island resident Raye Schwartz shares message below she sent to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) earlier today about pigeon poop at the Motorgate Garage.

Image of Entrance to Motorgate Garage Atrium

Ms. Schwartz reports:
I'm totally fed up with this situation. Today I stopped by the RIOC office and got as far as the receptionist who said "they're working on it" and to contact you. This has been going on for years and nothing is being done except we have to play hopscotch to get from the elevators to our parked cars. RIOC claims it's Motorgate's responsibility and they claim it's RIOC's job. The biggest issue is the proliferation of pigeon nests in the rafters, and those must be removed immediately.

Notice that the atrium was power washed and screening was installed to deter pigeons so RIOC could hang art. Yet they won't do anything to keep this crap from getting on our cars, our shoes and the wheels of baby strollers. Obviously, then, their priority is appearance rather than protecting the health and safety of people who are paying parking fees and taxes.

There are laws about this hazard in New York City. Does RIOC really want the unfavorable publicity if enough of us call the news media to report this or the aggravation of legal involvement if there are sanctions because of broken laws?

Can we please have a solution which should involve the following steps:
1. Get an exterminator to go through Motorgate and remove all pigeon nests from the rafters.
2. Install screening so the nests do not come back.
3. Power wash the droppings on a periodic and reasonable schedule.
4. Empower PSD to issue summons to people who ignore signage and feed pigeons and squirrels.
5. RIOC president to implement an immediate and continuing campaign which will include articles in the WIRE, signage on the kiosks, and flyers in stores, at the visitors center and on apartment building bulletin boards warning people about the health hazards.
6. While the NY City law about feeding pigeons is vague and confusing, there are workarounds  such as declaring that it is against the law of a particular community or entity (such as the Central Park Conservancy). Since RIOC is the name of this town they are able to declare certain activities illegal and punishable by law.
7. Reminding people that feeding pigeons also attracts rats, which has resulted in poison being put down and has already killed squirrels and could be a serious hazard to young kids playing outside.

These photos were taken today.

Please please please get this resolved.

Thanks,
UPDATE 10/19 -A RIOC Spokesperson responds:
We are taking the necessary steps to solve the pigeon issue at Motorgate and believe that with a consistent cleaning schedule, additional signage deterring people from feeding pigeons (including the health hazards associated with pigeon droppings) and eliminating nesting areas will help address the issue. Porters at Motorgate have increased the number of scheduled cleanings specifically for pigeon droppings on each floor. In addition, the Director of Island Operations, Cy Opperman, is currently looking into other humane solutions to control and deter the pigeons at the facility.

Roosevelt Island Fall For Arts Festival October 5, A Mystical Island - Call For Artists To Paint Outdoor Murals At Southpoint Park

Roosevelt Island's 2013 Fall For Arts Festival is coming up soon.

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President Charlene Indelciato reports:
The date is set for our annual Fall for the Arts Festival. In partnership with Gallery RIVAA, RIOC will be hosting the Festival on October 5th at Southpoint Park and on the lawn south of Rivercross. There will be music, art, food and fun for all!

I understand that the painting of large outdoor murals is the Festival’s most loved tradition. I look forward to viewing them both in the Park and later at the Motorgate Gallery.

The theme for this year's event is "A Mystical Island." It is free to participate - paint and brushes are provided!

We invite you to submit a sketch of your design or any inquiries to Anna.Rankin@rioc.ny.gov along with a title and short description. The deadline for sketches is September 21, 2013....
RIOC has put out a call for artists to show their works.

According to Arthash, RIOC is seeking:
... several artists to each paint a 6 ft x 8 ft mural outdoors at Southpoint Park during the 2013 Fall for Arts Festival. Every year, the Fall for Arts Festival inspires and engages Roosevelt Island's creative community with music, displays of art and interactive workshops. One of the festival's most-loved traditions is the painting of large outdoor murals - a large and enthusiastic audience comes out each year to watch these paintings take shape. After the festival concludes, the murals are left on display in the park for a short time, then moved into the Island's Motorgate Gallery for display through late 2014.

The theme for this year's event is "A Mystical Island," so designs should reflect a sense of magic or fantasy in some form. It's free to participate, paint and brushes are provided!

We invite you to submit a sketch of your design or any inquiries to Anna.Rankin@rioc.ny.gov along with a title and short description. Deadline for sketches is September 21st, 2013. Good luck!

Clog Editors Discuss Brutalism Architecture At Roosevelt Island's Gallery RIVAA - Roosevelt Island Is A Unique And Amazing Place They Say

As previously reported, following the opening of the Roosevelt Island Motorgate Art Gallery

Image of Motorgate Art Gallery Mural

the editors of Clog Magazine celebrated the launching of their latest issue with a discussion of Brutalism

at Gallery RIVAA.

John Lee of the Stewardship Report shares this video of Clog Magazine's talk about Brutalism.

Among the topics discussed was the wisdom, or lack thereof, of Main Street Master Leaseholder Hudson Related's plan to remove the glass window partitions from the Main Street Arcade. In response to a question from the architects whether the glass partitions were useful, the audience at Gallery RIVAA said that the windows were useful which, according to the architects, was more important than any opinion they may have.

Roosevelt Island Motorgate Gallery Opens - Gallery RIVAA Island Of Art Vision Becoming More Real

The Roosevelt Island Motorgate Art Gallery opened to the public yesterday afternoon with a Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

attended by residents, Gallery RIVAA artists, Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Directors and staff as well as visitors from Clog magazine who were celebrating Brutalism on Roosevelt Island.

Gallery RIVAA President Tad Sudol, who initiated the idea for the Motorgate Gallery, began the ceremony by thanking RIOC Director Margie Smith, Acting President Don Lewis and RIOC staff for the efforts they made to transform the Motorgate Atrium into the Motorgate Art Gallery.

As reported by Mr. Lewis in previous post:
... We are excited about the Project which through creative repurposing will have art adorn the walls of Motorgate’s atrium for the first time in many years. The Gallery is part of RIOC’s continuing efforts to expand the beautification of public spaces on the Island. Selected from works that were originally seen during previous Fall for Arts Festivals, the colorful murals were created by residents, local artists, students from The Child School/Legacy High School and PS/IS 217, and Roosevelt Island Visual Art Association (RIVAA) members. The pieces range in size and portray vivid images of Roosevelt Island, nature, cultural themes and abstract designs. We would like to thank RIVAA and its president Tad Sudol for partnering with us on the project and co-sponsoring the Project....
Here's what happened at yesterday's Roosevelt Island Motorgate Gallery Grand Opening

and some of the Motorgate Murals.

To celebrate the launch of CLOG's newest issue, join the editors on Roosevelt Island on March 23rd. At 2pm, CLOG will take part in the opening ceremony of the new Motorgate Gallery at 688 Main Street, after which we will walk south to Gallery RIVAA at 527 Main Street for a launch party at 3pm. CLOG and guest editor Michael Abrahamson will present the Brutalism issue, and photos by Iwan Baan, Andrew Kenney and Brett Beyer will be displayed.

A defining architectural style of the postwar era—characterized by severe, abstract geometries and the use of cast concrete, block and brick—Brutalism arguably produced some of the world’s least popular public buildings. The style’s international propagation brought modern architecture to ever-larger constituencies, and some argue that the perceived shortcomings of these Brutalist structures led to the demise of the Modernist project. While today often admired by architects, many Brutalist projects are now threatened with demolition....
