I am a resident of Roosevelt Island and I wanted to know if BBQ parties are
allowed during July 4th? If so, where are the spots to grill and if there is
any particular process for this (permits etc.)
Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Public Information Officer Amy Smith
answered:
The Lighthouse Park grills will be available for use on July 4th. The
procedure will be standard, which is a first-come, first-serve basis. You can
read more about it and send readers to our
website, here.

We will be serving our honey glazed smoked turkey legs, pulled pork sandwiches, mac. and cheese, golden honey corn bread and our traditional sweet tea with fresh mint served in a Mason Jar.
What's the story with the grill pits near us? Do we need some kind of permit to use them? Are they reservable?
Thank you and have a great weekend!
So, what is the Roosevelt Island Barbecue Grill policy? According to the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC):
Grills are located at Lighthouse Park, West Seawall near the Octagon, Octagon Soccer Field, and the East Seawall South of Queensboro Bridge.
All island grills are first come first served.
Personal/portable BBQ grills are prohibited! The only grills allowed for use are permanent, RIOC-sanctioned grills located throughout the island.
Here's some tips on barbecue grilling from Chef Bobby Flay and President Barack Obama. You think Bobby and the President might do a cooking demonstration on Roosevelt Island like Ellie Krieger did earlier this week?

Don't forget that the Doctor Steve Show will be broadcasting the Ellie Krieger healthy cooking on a grill segment that was shot earlier this week at the Riverwalk Bar & Grille this Sunday at 6:30 PM on Channel 11.

RAIN OR SHINE!!! Come Out & Play will transform New York City into a playground once again! The annual festival runs this summer during the weekend of June 12-14.
Dedicated to the kind of games you might’ve invented when you were a child, the fourth annual Come Out and Play festival takes over the city this weekend. Expect creative competitions like the Neo-Cowgirl Faux Rodeo, Circle Rules Football (played in the round using a giant Pilates ball) and Stalk Exchange, a cellphone game designed for Grand Central. The festival concludes with an awards ceremony, but c’mon: we’re all winners here.
If you are a BBQ lover, then you're in luck with a must attend event.

On Roosevelt Island this weekend, in addition to the Roosevelt Live Concert featuring Leah Siegal and Chana Rothman on Saturday, the Farmers Market is open as usual as is Gallery RIVAA, the Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association which is exhibiting a celebration of the Queensboro Bridge Centennial - Connecting Islands and Generations. Another suggestion - RIOC has produced a great self guided tour map (PDF File) of Roosevelt Island for any visitor or resident looking to stroll the Island and learn something more about it.
The MTA is reporting no Roosevelt Island F Train subway advisories this weekend and neither is RIOC with Tram advisories. Smooth Roosevelt Island transportation this weekend for the first time in a couple of weeks. However, RIOC is advising that:
Be advised on Sunday June 14th from 8 AM to 11 AM, there will be approximately 200 people walking on the seawall during a walkathon.

Update: 5:15 - A reader sends in the following message advising that there will be no Queens bound F train service to Roosevelt Island on Friday night/Saturday morning:
The MTA just sent an advisory (at 5 PM on Friday) that "due to emergency work" Queens-bound F trains will skip the Island as well as the other usual stations on Saturday from midnight to 5 AM. Hopefully that won't affect too many people.
According to the MTA there will be regular F train service to and from Roosevelt Island this weekend and RIOC reports no interruptions in Tram service either. Also, the MTA is providing a month of advance notice to Roosevelt Islanders that:
Beginning August 25th, two sets of escalators (four in total) will be taken out of service for a month as part of the escalator replacement project.
The escalators are located between the street and lower mezzanine. During this time, the remaining set of escalators will be running in the up direction.
The MTA Elevators and Escalators group will be on call should anything happen to the working escalators during the shutdown.
If you are planning a Roosevelt Island barbecue this Saturday be aware that:
On Saturday, July 26, a special event will be taking place in the BBQ area in Lighthouse Park from 9am to 9pm. Three BBQs will not be available due to the event. Please plan accordingly.
Other things to do this weekend include Saturday's City of Water celebration at Governors Island, the pre-fab housing exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art and the Buckminster Fuller, Starting With The Universe exhibit at the Whitney Museum. There's also a three game Yankee - Red Sox series at Fenway that can be watched on TV.
Great news for all you Roosevelt Island barbecuers out there. RIOC will be adding additional grills and benches at Lighthouse Park. According to RIOC President Steve Shane:
Barbecue grills are free to use and are on a first come basis. Realizing the heavy demand and frequent use of our grills we will be adding 5 new grills in addition to the 2 existing for a total of 7, we will also be adding I charcoal dumper which we haven't had in the past, along with 7 new Park benches which are wheel chair accessible. All items will be installed within two weeks at Lighthouse Park. Moving forward we will make additional assessments and improvements as needed.
That looked like a yummy recipe for Country Style Pork Ribs, also known as Jack's Ribs. Just remember to invite me. On a cautionary note, be aware that open bottles of alcohol could get you a ticket and a trip to court. More on that later.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to barbecue and enjoy the magnificent views at Southpoint Park as well. That won't ever happen if the Louis Kahn/FDR memorial is permitted to be built.
