UPDATE - No Alien Invasion Of Roosevelt Island Last Night - Astoria Con Edison Power Plant Substation Transformer Explosion Caused Creepy Nighttime Blue Sky Seen All Over NYC

An update on last night's creepy blue glow that lit up the sky over Roosevelt Island, Astoria and the East River waterfront seen from much of NYC.

According to Con Edison:

Last night at 9:12 p.m., an electrical fault on a section of 138,000-volt equipment in one of our Astoria substations caused a transmission disturbance and a sustained electrical arc flash, creating the blue light people witnessed. The equipment that malfunctioned is associated with voltage monitoring within the substation. There were no serious injuries, although one employee at the substation reported eye irritation associated with the arc flash.

The transmission disturbance caused lights to flicker throughout much of our service area, and several facilities, including LaGuardia Airport, Rikers Island, and some area hospitals, reported that their electrical systems switched to backup generation during the event. They were back on Con Edison power late last night. Service on the subway system’s 7 line in Queens was also impacted for about 30 minutes while track equipment was reset. Some other customer electrical equipment also shut off and had to be reset.

We apologize for the disruption to customers and will continue to investigate the root cause of the incident.

DEPUTY INSPECTOR NUNEZ, COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE 114TH PRECINCT OF THE NYPD ON SCENE. THIS INCIDENT DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE HAD ANY EFFECT ON ROOSEVELT ISLAND.

Governor Cuomo spoke at the Astoria Con Edison power plant this afternoon.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today called for the New York State Public Service Commission to investigate the cause behind a major electrical failure at a Con Edison substation in Astoria, Queens shortly after 9 p.m. yesterday. While the incident did not cause any significant injuries or apparently result in damage to personal property, it did raise questions about the safety of the substation and Con Edison equipment while also disrupting operations at LaGuardia Airport, the No. 7 subway line of the MTA and the city's prison system at Rikers Island, which had to switch to back-up generators.

"The electrical failure in Queens was more dramatic than destructive but it understandably raised community concerns about the safety of the substation and Con Edison's equipment," Governor Cuomo said. "That's why I am asking the Public Service Commission to work together with Con Ed to investigate the electrical failure and identify the root cause to help ensure an incident like this never happens again.

The state also deployed Department of Environmental Conservation spill response staff to the scene and confirmed that the small amount of material spilled was contained onsite and no impacts to the environment were observed. Con Edison has reported that the spill has been cleaned up.

According to Con Edison, last night at approximately 9:12 p.m. an electrical fault occurred at the Astoria East Substation located at 20th Avenue and 32nd Street in Astoria Queens. The electrical fault on the 138,000-volt equipment caused a sustained electrical arc flash that was visible across a wide area. Con Edison crews responded with FDNY. The affected equipment was isolated to a single section within the substation.

Con Edison has reported that Thursday's malfunction involved voltage-monitoring equipment at the substation, where high-voltage power is narrowed down to lower voltage for distribution. Normally when there is an electrical fault, a device similar to a circuit-breaker intervenes and quickly cuts off power to the affected equipment. In this incident, the device did not intervene and the electricity kept cycling through, causing the electrical flash. The affected equipment was isolated to a single section within the substation.

"Ensuring public safety is job number one for Con Edison and all utilities operating in New York State," PSC Chair John B. Rhodes said. "Our team of safety experts will commence an immediate investigation of what happened at the substation to help ensure that a repeat does not occur. If the company failed to adhere to our safety standards or otherwise adequately perform its obligations, we will commence a proceeding to determine whether further action is warranted."

Con Edison has restored all major transmission lines associated with this event and is in the process of investigating the cause of the failure. While portions of LaGuardia Airport were temporarily closed due to power outages, full power has been fully restored and the airport quickly resumed normal operations. Additionally, power issues on the No. 7 subway route were resolved and the line is running local service. There were no other significant reported power outages.

Today's actions build on New York's continued work to protect public safety and to create a power supply that is cleaner and greener for the future. Two years ago, Governor Cuomo announced plans to accelerate the closing of Indian Point's nuclear reactors because of their location in a densely populated region of the state and their record on safety at the site. This year, New York will be the most progressive state in the nation with the launch of the green new deal that will make the state's electricity 100 percent carbon neutral by 2040.

Citibike Docking Stations Coming To Astoria This Summer, Already In Long Island City - But No Citibike Stations For Roosevelt Island On Horizon

Roosevelt Island's next door neighbors living in Astoria will soon have Citibike docking stations. According to the Astoria Post:

The first batch of Citi Bikes will be rolling in to Astoria sometime this summer.

The Department of Transportation presented a map of 59 proposed locations for Citi Bike docking stations at a Community Board 1 Transportation Committee meeting last night, though DOT is still looking for feedback on the proposed locations.

Under the plan, 59 docking stations would be installed within the boundaries of Queens Plaza North, 44th Street, Ditmars Boulevard and the waterfront beginning this summer. Twelve of the locations would be installed on the roadway, and the rest would be added on the sidewalk....

But, still no Citibike stations for Roosevelt Island even though Citibike riders can often be seen on Roosevelt Island

and Roosevelt Island was the neighborhood with most request for Citibike docking stations.

Hopes were high in September 2010 for a Roosevelt Island bike sharing station when the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) undertook a demonstration here.

Nothing came of it.

The closest Astoria Citibike docking station to Roosevelt Island appears to be Spirit Playground, 2 blocks from the Roosevelt Island Bridge, at 36th Ave/10 Street (We Heart Astoria has a large map of the proposed sites)



Citibike stations are already located in nearby Long Island City.

Will Citibike ever install bicycle sharing stations on Roosevelt Island? I asked Roosevelt Island's NYC Council Member Ben Kallos, a long time supporter of Citibike stations on Roosevelt Island.

According to Council Member Kallos:

Roosevelt Island began investigating the options of a bike share in the summer of 2012 when the city first launched its program. With the ongoing support from the community, Citibike docking stations were requested for R.I., more than any other zip code in town. The community deserves to be a part of this successful initiative.  Bike share systems provide sturdy bikes at self-service docking stations and are available 24/7.

It’s a great alternative means of transportation and is a quick and healthy way to get around the island. We are currently exploring bringing CitiBike to Roosevelt Island jointly with the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), the Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and Motivate.

If we can't get Citibike on Roosevelt Island in the near term, perhaps a docking station at the top of the helix

New Long Island City Greek Restaurant Planning To Open Next To Roosevelt Island Bridge On Vernon B'lvd and 36th Avenue In Spring - Could An International Restaurant Row Be Developing In Area?

I was walking back from Long Island City a couple of weeks ago and noticed work being done on the long vacant Vernon B'lvd/36th Avenue storefront across from the Roosevelt Island Bridge.

I spoke with the couple doing renovations to the storefront and learned that they plan to open a Greek restaurant in the spring.

It's not quite a new Roosevelt Island restaurant opening but it's pretty close.

Could there be a new international restaurant row developing near the Roosevelt Island Bridge? Across the street from the new Greek restaurant is the Melting Pot Caribbean restaurant.

Taking bets on who opens first - the new Greek place or the Trellis.

Council Member Constantinides issued this June 4 Press Release:

Council Member Costa Constantinides and the NYC Economic Development Corporation today hosted a Town Hall on the upcoming ferry dock in Astoria. The dock will be part of the upcoming citywide ferry system set to be implemented by the EDC in 2017.

The ferry dock will be located along the Southern portion of Halletts Peninsula. Once the docks are built, the ferry system will be operated by a third-party provider. A ferry ride will be equal to the cost of a subway ride. The ferry system is targeted to be implemented by 2017.

Target ferry riders will be commuters who live walking distance from the dock and who ride the ferry to get to work during the week or for appointments during the weekend.

Constantinides said, “We are at a turning point for Astoria. This ferry system will provide vital transportation options to an often under served neighborhood. It will make Western Astoria more interconnected with Manhattan, Brooklyn, and other parts of Queens. It will also be a sustainable and inclusive way to use our city’s greatest resource - our waterfront.

Astorians that live near the ferry dock - in Astoria Houses, Old Astoria, and Goodwill - are so close to Manhattan yet it takes a 30 minute bus ride to an overcrowded train to get there. Ferry service will change that paradigm. Now is the time to embrace an additional form of transportation.”

“A Citywide Ferry system is a historic undertaking that will play a vital role in the City’s efforts to create a modern and equitable economy for all New Yorkers", said NYCEDC Executive Vice President Seth Myers. “Service to Astoria not only provides another transportation option for local residents, it also bolsters the resiliency of our entire transportation system, connecting New Yorkers to the waterfront and job centers, and driving business growth and job creation across New York City."

Costa Constantinides represents the New York City Council's 22nd District, which includes his native Astoria along with parts of Woodside, East Elmhurst, and Jackson Heights.

Some in the Town Hall audience were not happy with the format of the NYC EDC Ferry presentation. According to the Astoria Post:

... Numerous attendees also took issue with the structure of the EDC’s presentation itself.

After EDC representatives gave a slideshow talk on the ferry’s location, rollout and design, they broke into small stations – geared to separate issues such as transportation and design – to speak one-on-one with neighbors. There was no opportunity for a public question-and-answer session.

“I thought that that weakens us as a community. I wasn’t too happy about that,” Vernon Boulevard resident Mayra Mercado said. “It dilutes our voice.”

“When you have a breakout format, you [should] come back together, and one person from each groups shares,” 28th Avenue resident Dominique Perrot said. “I don’t really know what all the issues are.”...

I asked about funding for construction of a Roosevelt Island Ferry dock. Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Directors have previously said they were not aware of any current funding sources. I was told by NYC EDC representatives at the Astoria Town Hall that the Roosevelt Island dock will be funded although no specifics were provided. NYC EDC reps also indicated a willingness to come to Roosevelt Island for a future Ferry Town Hall meeting.

Making Movie Magic: How 1920s Astoria Came to Life in Filming The Great Gatsby in 2013

tomorrow starting 6:30 PM at the Roosevelt Island Public Library.

According to RIHS:

One of the challenges facing Baz Luhrmann in his 2013 cinematic remake of the classic The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was how to recreate 1920s Queens. Robert Singleton, Executive Director of the Greater Astoria Historical Society, will describe the behind-the-scenes research and movie magic in a lecture sponsored by the Roosevelt Island Historical Society, on Tuesday, January 20 at 6:30 PM, at the New York Public Library Branch on Roosevelt Island.

Mr. Singleton will discuss the pivotal role that the Greater Astoria Historical Society played in evoking the bygone era. The Society was a credited historical advisor on the film, which won the 2014 Academy Award for Best Production Design.

The event is FREE and open to the public. It is the first in a series of spring lectures sponsored by the Roosevelt Island Historical Society.

to and from Manhattan this weekend. That's 8 consecutive weekends of Roosevelt Island F train service to and from Manhattan.

F Trains run local in both directions between 21 St-Queensbridge and 71 Av

Weekend, 12:01 AM Sat to 5 AM Mon, Jan 10 - 12

Trains stop at 36, Steinway, 46 Sts, Northern Blvd, 65 St, Roosevelt, Elmhurst, Grand Avs, Woodhaven Blvd, 63 Dr and 67 Av

Also, don't be surprised when you see the R train at Roosevelt Island. The MTA reports:

R Trains skip 5 Av/59 St, Lexington Av/59 St and Queens Plaza in both directions

Weekend , Saturday and Sunday, Jan 10 - 11

Trains are rerouted via the F in both directions between 57 St-7 Av, Manhattan and 36 St, Queens, making stops at the Lexington Av/63 St, Roosevelt Island and 21 St-Queensbridge Stations.

According to the MTA Weekender, there will be Roosevelt Island F train service

to and from Manhattan this weekend.

Also, the MTA reports:

F Trains run local in both directions between 21 St-Queensbridge and 71 Av

Weekends, 12:01 AM Sat to 5 AM Mon, Jan 3 - 5 • Jan 10 - 12

Trains stop at 36, Steinway, 46 Sts, Northern Blvd, 65 St, Roosevelt, Elmhurst, Grand Avs, Woodhaven Blvd, 63 Dr and 67 Av.

No Roosevelt Island F Train Service To Manhattan This Weekend But Local F Train Service To Steinway Street - Check Out Astoria, Then Walk Home

Here we go again.

According to the MTA:

F Coney Island-bound trains run via the M from Roosevelt Av to 47-50 Sts

Weekend, 11:15 PM Fri to 5 AM Mon, Sep 26 - 29

Trains run express from Roosevelt Av to Queens Plaza.

No Coney Island-bound F service at 21 St-Queensbridge, Roosevelt Island, Lexington Av/63 St and 57 St.

And:

F Jamaica-bound trains run local from 21 St-Queensbridge to 71 Av

Weekend, 12:01 AM Sat to 5 AM Mon, Sep 27 - 29

Trains make local stops at 36, Steinway, 46 Sts, Northern Blvd, 65 St, Roosevelt, Elmhurst, Grand Avs, Woodhaven Blvd, 63 Dr and 67 Av.

Try Astoria again this weekend. Take the F Train to Steinway Street and explore Broadway, 30th Avenue and/or Ditmars B'lvd in Astoria.



After a delicious Astoria meal, work it off by walking back to Roosevelt Island.

Take A Walk Over Roosevelt Island Bridge To Melting Pot Caribbean Restaurant On Vernon Boulevard - We Love Astoria Likes It Very Much

Have you ever tried the Melting Pot Caribbean restaurant on Vernon Boulevard and 36th Avenue just over the Roosevelt Island Bridge?

We Love Astoria did and wrote a very positive review of the restaurant. An excerpt:

Melting Pot Cuisine, the neighborhood’s only source of Jamaican cooking, is perched on the neighborhood’s southwestern corner, abutting the Roosevelt Island Bridge at the intersection of 36th Avenue and Vernon Boulevard. They deliver everywhere in the neighborhood, but it’s worth trekking down there to enjoy a meal in their sunny dining room....

and:

... The curry chicken roti is good bet on a cold day. It’s a huge griddled flatbread, filled with chicken on the bone and hunks of potato stewed in fragrant spiced gravy....
