Former Roosevelt Island Rivercross Co-op Owner Claims Cancer Caused By Exposure To Radiation From Undisclosed Electric Transformer Adjacent To Apartment Bedroom Common Wall In Lawsuit Filed Last Week

The NY Post reported January 8:
... Dragan Micic, 48, and wife Lidija Bubanja are suing Rivercross Terrace and others for negligence, claiming no one told them when they bought their home at 531 Main St. that the transformer was on the other side of their bedroom wall....
According to a lawsuit filed January 6, 2022 in NY State Supreme Court by former Rivercross Co-op owners Dragan Micic and Lidija Bubanja:

1- This is an action for misrepresentation, negligence, nuisance, breach of the warranty of habitability, loss of consortium and punitive damages arising out of the presence of an electric transformer, which emitted dangerous levels of electromagnetic radiation, in a transformer room located directly adjacent to and sharing a common wall with Plaintiffs’ bedroom in their residential cooperative apartment, number or unit 911, located at 531 Main Street, Roosevelt Island, New York. The existence of the transformer was undisclosed to the Plaintiffs when they purchased and eventually moved into the unit on or about May 31, 2019. For the next 17 months, Plaintiffs slept less than one foot away from the transformer and their upper bodies, more specifically their heads and necks were exposed for 6 to 10 hours a day to levels of radiation that exceeded recommended standards. Despite Plaintiffs’ repeated complaints, Defendants did nothing to effectively remediate the situation and allowed the dangerous exposure to continue unabated.

2- As a result of this sustained exposure, Micic developed a tumor in his nasal passage and ocular region within his skull, which was diagnosed in August 2020 as an aggressive form of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma. This is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure to radiation and other environmental toxic substances. Such type of tumor is normally slow to develop. However, in this instance, due to the constant daily exposure to excessive amounts of EMF radiation to Micic’s head and neck, the growth of the tumor was accelerated. In addition, Micic and his wife Bubanja also suffered persistent headaches, fatigue, anxiety, and insomnia caused by the exposure. ...

... 5 - On the advice of Micic’s treating surgeon, Plaintiffs moved out and eventually sold in July 21, 2021, at an overall financial loss, their Apartment at 531 Main Street in the middle of the pandemic induced dip in the New York City housing market. They incurred moving and other related expenses as a result of this move.

Below is the full Complaint.

I asked the Rivercross Board for comment yesterday. They declined at the time but sources tell me a statement is coming soon from the Rivercross Board, possibly later today.

What do some Rivercross residents think? According to one:

If true it’s going to be a real problem and it’s really scary.
and a second:
... this will raise some concerns for a small number of shareholders, who have had — or have — cancer or related illnesses & reside near the Transformer rooms.

The lawsuit does not say if the new buyers of the apartment were informed about the electric transformer.

Stay tuned.

UPDATE 1/12: Several building residents shared this email they received yesterday from the Rivercross Board of Directors:

This past Friday, we learned of a lawsuit filed against Rivercross by a former shareholder, which was picked up by a local newspaper.  The claim involves alleged exposure to EMFs (electromagnetic fields) from the transformer room located next to his apartment.  The allegations against Rivercross are without merit and we will vigorously defend against the lawsuit.  If you have any questions, please direct those questions to the Board.
I asked the Riverwalk Board today:
Will there be any statement to the media? There was not much information in the statement. I've spoken to Rivercross residents worried about the health implications of the allegations in the lawsuit. Will the Board answer questions about what safety protocols are in place regarding living near the electric transformers?

You're Invited To Meet Your Friendly Roosevelt Island Neighborhood Scientists, Weill Cornell Medicine Postdoc Pub Talk At Nisi Restaurant Tuesday March 26 - Topic, Critical Mass: Cancer Progression And Treatment Progress

The Postdoctoral Association of Weill Cornell Medicine is hosting their second neighborhood Pub Talk event at Roosevelt Island's Nisi Kitchen (559 Main Street) Tuesday, March 26.

You're invited to attend.

According to the Weill Cornell Medicine Postdocs:
The Weill Cornell Medicine Postdoctoral Association presents: the Postdoc “Pub Talk” Series, an outreach event featuring the research of WCM postdocs* to engage both fellow researchers and science enthusiasts from around New York City!

Come meet your friendly neighborhood scientists! Three researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine will discuss what they are doing in the lab to advance the scientific frontier in cancer research. March 26, 2019 - 7:30 PM at Nisi Kitchen (549 Main Street, Roosevelt Island).

Up first, Fanny Vatter will present "Exosomes: tiny messengers for big discoveries". Exosomes are vehicles released from cells, carrying molecules. The contents of an exosome can be used as a biomarker to determine the health or disease of a cell. Join Fanny as she discusses her latest research investigating the role of exosomes in breast cancer progression.

Next, Brian Pickering will present “The Epitranscriptome: small marks with big effects”. Genes give our cells the instructions necessary for life are expressed as RNA, which then makes proteins, which provide the structure and carry out most of the chemistry in our cells. With advances in technologies, we have discovered small chemical modifications that decorate our RNA, informing how much protein to make and how long to stick around before being degraded. Cancer cells hijack this process to proliferate indefinitely and resist treatment. Learn how Brian’s research investigates these processes with the goal of developing a new generation of therapeutics to fight cancer.

To conclude, Wilhem Leconet will present “Controlled delivery and targeting, future’s keywords in cancer therapy”. Wilhems work focuses on a small therapeutic protein, named BiJ591, in prostate cancer. Come hear about how his research has provided new insights into the development of controlled delivery of small therapeutic proteins like BiJ591 in cancer, that once implemented, allow continued release of the therapeutic agent.

*What is a postdoc?? A postdoctoral scholar, or “postdoc” is a temporary mentored research position held by an individual with a doctoral degree. Postdocs engage in research and training that allows them to acquire the professional skills necessary to pursue a related independent career.

Alex Schoeneck, Relay For Life Community Manager reports:
Relay For Life is a community walking event to fight cancer. Individuals participate in teams, with one participant from each team walking a track at all times. In between laps, participants do three very important things: celebrate, remember, and fight back. They celebrate cancer survivors and their caregivers, remember loved ones lost to the disease, and fight back by raising critical funds for the life-saving mission of the American Cancer Society.

This Saturday, June 20th, over 100 Island residents will unite in the fight against cancer at the third annual Relay For Life of Roosevelt Island, sponsored by Riverwalk Point and Amalgamated Bank. The event, which takes place at the Octagon Field (755 Main Street), starts at 10AM and lasts until 10PM. Individuals interested in attending can register on-site from 10AM until 8PM, free of charge.

Below is the family-friendly schedule of events. Highlights include the official event kick off at the 11:30AM Opening “Celebrate” Ceremony, followed by a survivor lap and caregiver lap, as well as the 9PM Luminaria “Remember” Ceremony. After the Island community helped us raise $27,000 for the American Cancer Society in 2014, the planning committee set a goal of raising $35,000 in 2015! We are well on our way to making this dream a reality, but we can’t do it without you, so stop by and walk a lap with us this Saturday! Be Ballsy Gigantic Testicle Rolling Down Roosevelt Island Street Yesterday To Promote Testicular Cancer Awareness Among Young Men

Yesterday afternoon I noticed a Gigantic Ball rolling down the  hill of the Roosevelt Island Riverwalk Commons passing Starbucks

being pulled by a young man named Cory Godbee.

I asked Mr. Godbee what was going and he explained that the Gigantic Ball was part of the Be Ballsy campaign, started by Thomas Cantley to raise awareness among young men of Testicular Cancer.  Here's what Mr. Godbee had to say.

According to the Be Ballsy web site:
Thomas Cantley is pushing a GIANT BALL across America to promote awareness of testicular cancer and men’s health.

MR. BALLSY is the cancer story no one has heard.

Armed with a six-foot ball, Thomas Cantley wants to prove you don’t need to raise billions of dollars to make a difference. On an eleven-city tour, traveling from Santa Monica to New York City, never deflating this ball or detaching it from himself, Thomas has turned his educational awareness campaign into an adventure packed traveling circus.

In each city Thomas will reach out to fellow survivors he has met online and enlist their help in establishing MR. BALLSY as a new type of support group for men. Part personal coming of age story and part road tour adventure story, MR. BALLSY is the story of how far a young man will go to earn the right to call himself Ballsy.

The goal for the month long trip is to fill the ball with messages from people Thomas meets along the way.
Mr. Ballsy did get quite a bit of attention and signatures here on Roosevelt Island yesterday

while rolling down the street.

More information on the Be Ballsy Testicular Cancer campaign is here and on Facebook.

American Cancer Society Roosevelt Island Relay For Life Organizing Meeting 8 PM Monday September 15 At Good Shepherd Community Center - Volunteers Needed For Planning Committee

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is inviting Roosevelt Island residents to organize and participate in its third annual Relay For Life on Roosevelt Island. The ACS will be hosting a 8 PM meeting on September 15 at the Good Shepherd Community Center (543 Main Street) to explain what is involved in organizing a Relay For Life. According to ACS Relay For Life Specialist Alex Schoeneck:
The Relay For Life of Roosevelt Island is seeking volunteers for our planning committee! Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society, but it is also so much more than just fundraising event.

Relay is a daylong, team-based walking event where we celebrate survivors and caregivers, remember those lost to cancer, and fight back against a disease that has caused too much pain for far too long.

Last April, over 100 community members came together at the Relay For Life of Roosevelt Island to raise over $27,000 for the American Cancer Society.

We are proud of what we accomplished, but we need your help to accomplish even more. We are looking for volunteers with marketing skills and people skills, volunteers with social media know-how, volunteers who are compassionate, creative, and friendly. But above all, if you are passionate about the fight against cancer, we want you to join our planning committee!

We are holding a general interest meeting on Monday, September 15th at 8pm in the Good Shepherd Chapel. Come learn more about Relay For Life and how you can get involved! If you’re unable to attend but want to learn more, you can contact Alex Schoeneck by phone (212.237.3886) or email (alex.schoeneck@cancer.org). Together, we can finish the fight!

You're Invited To Come Together To Help Fight Cancer At 2nd Annual Roosevelt Island Relay For Life Fundraiser On April 26 - Honor Survivors, Remember Loved Ones

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is inviting Roosevelt Island residents to organize and participate in a Relay For Life on Roosevelt Island.

According to ACS:
At Relay For Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer – just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year!

Relay For Life teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park, or fairground. Events are up to 24 hours long, and because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times....
ACS's Roosevelt Island Specialist Alex Schoeneck reports:
Help Finish the Fight Against Cancer During Relay For Life of Roosevelt Island

Join the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Roosevelt Island on Saturday, April 26th at the Octagon Soccer Field from 10AM to 10PM and help finish the fight against cancer. This day-long event celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those we have lost and provides the community with an opportunity to unite and fight back against this disease.

There will be entertainment from Gotham Rock Choir, James Humphrey, and Luck & Senses, among others. Silent auction and raffle items will include Jazz at Lincoln Center tickets, a St. Andrew’s Country Club golf and lunch package, music lessons, one week to Island Kids summer camp, and more!

You can join the fight against cancer by visiting www.relayforlife.org/RooseveltIslandNY to register. Funds raised through Relay For Life support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to make this cancer’s last century.

Ms Schoeneck spoke at last night's Community Board 8 Public Session about the April 26 Roosevelt Island Relay for Life and April 21 organizing meeting. Here's what she had to say.

This will be the second Roosevelt Island Relay For Life. Last June 15 members of the Roosevelt Island community

gathered and walked around Octagon Field in the first Roosevelt Island Relay For Life.

It was an incredibly moving and powerful experience just watching the Relay and hearing the stories from cancer survivors and family members who lost loved ones.

Here's some of the 2013 Roosevelt Island Relay For Life.

Terribly Sad Story - Roosevelt Island Mom With Cancer Chooses Baby's Life Over Her Own

A terribly sad story in the NY Post yesterday about a young couple, Max and Elizabeth Joice, who moved to Roosevelt Island in June 2013 to start a family. Ms. Joice, a cancer survivor, learned she was pregnant a few days after moving to Roosevelt Island. But, a month later, she received the news that the cancer tumor had returned.

According to the NY Post:

... Doctors removed the mass, but because she was pregnant, Elizabeth couldn’t undergo full-body MRI scans and her oncologist couldn’t see whether the cancer was growing.

The baby was due March 4, but the doctors could no longer wait. In January, a surgeon performed a C-section and beautiful baby Lily was born.

Elizabeth’s health quickly declined as her cancer spread. Tumors invaded her right lung, heart and abdomen “We said our goodbyes,” Max said. “It was like something out of a movie. We sat there and cried. We tried to tell stories, talk about all the great things.”

“Liz came home five days after Lily was born,” Max said. “That one night at home was all we had.”

Elizabeth died on March 9 in her hospital bed with Max by her side....
