Garbage Bags Strewn In Front of Roosevelt Island Riverwalk Crossing Building On A Hot Day - Welcome Sight For Those Getting Off The Tram

Is there any reason why Roosevelt Island's Riverwalk Crossing building management (Related Management) at 405 Main Street should be leaving their garbage piles out on the street during the day, particularly a very hot and sunny day like today? Could be a sumptuous feast for the Roosevelt Island Rat population.

I saw the pictured garbage pile at approximately 3 PM today on my way to the Tram and it was still there at 6:30 PM.

In the past, the buildings waiting until evening to put out their garbage to be carted away. Why the change?

UPDATE 6/9 - Hudson/Related's David Kramer, developer of Riverwalk Crossing, responds:
Thanks for the post, and we can obviously do better. I've spoken to our management team; we're undertaking some staffing changes starting June 22 which should improve the situation.

Riverwalk Crossing is on the AVAC system, so this is most likely recycle material. But it is an eye sore...

Welcome to NYC. Roosevelt Island is catching up fast with the fact that it is part of the city.

Roosevelt Landing has revived their open-tup garbage container on the West Side promenade.

Seems PSD is unable to stop this sort of thing

Maybe it's part of a grand plan to attract rats so that the people who tend the Island Cats can save some money. On the other hand, I did see a squirrel sitting on one of the cat hutches behing Dayspring Church, so I suspect the cats are less feral than they used to be.

7:47 poster,WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!! What does a garbage container have to do with psd? Did you ever take time out of your busy life and think that maybe Urban American has permission from RIOC to have that container there? Wow what a lame

@8:30 Anon - what garbage container? The point is that there aren't piles of garbage, whether regular or recyclable, on the streets of RI in front of any other buildings. If not PSD, then someone else, needs to ask the management group in this building to "clean up" their act. Literally.

PSD Director Guerra has previously told/asked Urban American to empty the overloaded dumpster. That is what it has to do with PSD @8:30

it is no Garbage, in fact it is bags of things to be recyled, and in fact, buildings 415 and 425, and all the rest do the same thing and I have to walk past it as well.

Also, that is the back of the building, not the front, unlike ther other buildings in Southtown that dump theirs along the main sidewalk hundreds of people walk to in the afternoons and at night.

is it pick on the renters day?

what is more upsetting is the fact that nobody at RIOC answers their emails when people ask about important issues on the island, like why does the red bus only makes 2 stops in Southtown? Why is wildlife being killed on the island at the new Park being built at South Point? Why does the Q102 bus no stop at equal intervals on the island or the red bus for that matter?

the paper items and such were put out extra early for some reason that day it seems and is not habit, so relax everyone...we are not the evil bad monsters everyone says we are. Even RIOC goes slow to respond to anything once they here you are calling from this part of the island. Hmmmm, why is that? We pay our taxes and do not depend on the state to help us pay our rent or bills. You should be glad we live here and pay our high rents to you.

Believe me, there are more dangerous and more pressing issues on this island like gangs, drugs and the fact those things still exist here...The recycle stuff is helping the island believe it or not.

The avac unit was down for a few days, which may have contributed to the pile

It is such a shame to see pile of garbage on the roadside.

That is a lot of garbage - however, not that different from the piles of giant garbage bags in front of Manhattan buildings. The difference is they do not leave them right in front of the buildings - they usually pile them up by the service entrance/area.

Because visitors may arrive by tram, 415 by the tram is in effect the "front" of Southtown/all of RI and the bags of garbage may be the first impression visitors receive of Southtown/RI.

This garbage has consistently been on the curb, last week I also watched someone picking through the trash for bottles, when a public safety officer stopped his car. I thought he was going to approach the trash picker, but instead crossed the street and got an ice cream cone. The trash picker looked as confused as I was. The weirdness on RI continues to surprise me,

Can't they just build a shelter so it's not so ugly to look at?

the first impression on RI is the brand new Trams with no AC, then when they arrive the see the Visitor Center/History Kiosk closed with noboy running the shop. Then greeted with an ice cream truck charging 3 bucks for a cone of frozen something or another. The 2 or 3 days that recyled bags and bottles put out late in the day is not a horrible thing, the other buildings in Southtown do the same, except it is right on the main sidewalk..the recycled bags and boxes are put where they are supposed to be put for the truck to pick the stuff up.

Roosevelt Island is still NYC. Ys, there is garbage. There is overpriced ice cream. I doubt it really leaves a bad impression.

I am more concerned by the ugly concrete platform (?) being erected at the southern tip of the island. I view it from Sutton/Beekman Place daily. Whose crazy idea was this and more importantly, who signed off on the project.
It would have been better to convert that area into a lovely eco park that attracts butterfiles, birds and those who want to find a bit of peace in Manhattan.

Cities - The Kahn-designed FDR Memorial is currently taking shape at the S. end of RI.  I believe marble is being used for the monument.  My impression is that it will be a dramatic V - as in V for victory - leading to a powerful 3-sided "room" upon which will be engraved FDR's 4 Freedoms.  A bust of FDR will be included, as well as an additional sculpture of FDR in a wheelchair which recognizes the fact that the physically disabled president had the force of personality and intelligence to beat the Fascists, as well as the Depression.

The memorial was designed by the late Louis Kahn, who is generally considered to be one of the best U.S. architects.  It was part of the original plan for Roosevelt Island.
