Tell RIOC President Leslie Torres What The 10 Best Things About Roosevelt Island Are - She May Put Your Choice In Her Next Community Report

Image of RIOC President Leslie Torres

Received the following message from Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Community Relations Specialist Erica Wilder;
Greetings!

Hope this email finds you well.

Summer is almost here! For Leslie Torres’ next column in the Wire, we are compiling a list of top 10 things to do on Roosevelt Island this summer. We’d love to get your input.

Please send us your recommendations for places to visit or activities happening with your group or organization between mid-June and August. We’ll compile a list of the ten most common recommendations for the column. If there's more, I'll expand the list.

We’ll also include the top ten list on the Tram and our website and will explore other ways to let visitors know about all our Island has to offer.

There is much to do on the Island during the summer and we want to be able to get the word out to residents and visitors.

Please forward all input no later than Friday, June 10th. I look forward to reading your recommendations.

Lets hope that Erica can do a better job than has been done so far this spring getting our Island's treasures into the NYP, NYDN, NYT, all the boro-specific newspapers, and on NY 1 - which reaches a lot of folks...

non of the Grills on this island have Charcoal bins that is a fire harzard and just a few weeks ago there was a fire near the new park on the southern tip of the island because of the lack of charcoal bins...The FDNY should close the faulty grills down till they are updated and made safe. Also the amount of drinking and drug dealing in the summer needs to be addressed at the northern tip of the island and the southern tip of the island. The dealers start to circle the island when the sun goes down and that is just one more reason that we new NYPD here for good. PSD cannot secure this island from all the thugs and drug dealers that drive over here at night looking to sell to the kids here...maybe Ms. Tores will address that issue soon before more kids die here from drug use.

I like walking my adorable and very well-behaved dogs on the lawn beside Rivercross...oh, wait. I'm not supposed to do that anymore.

Never mind.

What for sure is not on the Top Ten list is riding the Tram in the Summer without even a fan nor A/C that is brutal. Come on!

How many drug victims do we have on RI? I'd like to see some numbers that back up all these claims.

And to the 11:34am: you can walk your dog down by the water for a much better view and experience.

1107, that makes no sense. A sole nypd officer will hadle all of the drug dealing?

You are clueless on how a police department is ran, especially the nypd.

So lets say the roosevelt island community officer, if he cares to, makes a drug arrest, now said officer is not here.

Thanks 2:16, but I am perfectly capable of deciding what view and experience I prefer. Don't need the least bit of help from you.

Nevertheless, Leslie Torres should list helpful people like you as one of the best things about RI.

I know I'll get blasted for this one, but having our own Public Safety Department has to be one of them. That's the selling point about why this is one of the safest neighborhoods in the city.

To the poster at 5:48, why would you get blasted for making an intelligent statement. Obviously, having PSD here is a great asset. The people who talk about having NYPD here instead of PSD are CLUELESS. Do you they really think that RI would have over 35 NYPD officers like we do with PSD, obviously not. Additionally, NYPD on RI would be subject to the same staffing cuts as the rest of the NYPD in NYC. The people who call for this have NO CLUE and can not see outside the box on any issue.

I agree with the above 2 posters...

I think having a Public Safety Department is definitely in the top 10.

So, is the view of Manhattan at night (all lit up).

So is the Turf Field my kids play Soccer on.

So is the tight-knit community (despite what some bloggers think - just see this Saturday's Roosevelt Island Day).

So is the Tram.

That's my list.

Didn't say list our 10 fave things about this great island home of ours...

I have lived here since 7/82- so many things.

I first saw this island on a hot June day to take a look at an apt.

1) The Tram-there is nothing like it, the views, you can clear your mind-just awesome after-still-29 years all year round.

2) Blackwell House- I love sitting near there- knowing it was a working farmhouse with family going about their business dating back to the 1700's- I have to check my facts.

3)the Trees and Lawns and open spaces that I have known since I came here- I live in Westview-we have a great courtyard- with beautiful trees, a more secluded lawn, an enclosed pool-with skylights and a great lawn right on the river- that I first sat on when I moved here..

4) the concrete wall facing the Western channel looking over at the FDR- great place to just sit, read, sunbathe, meditate, walk or just be..

5) The Historic Lighthouse and the Park

6) Meditation -Reflection steps.

7) So many of our wonderful neighbors and friends in Westview and other buildings and the Store- Vendors -who we have been friends with for years- you never feel alone.

8)Main Street- for feeling like a small town- from the first day I got here.

9) We have Families, elderly, disabled, middle class, working class and more affluent residents and we do try to be a Community- we need to come together more as one to be what this Island was meant to be- a small, community, once totally abandoned except for both Coler and Goldwater Hospitals.

10) The Church of the Good Sheperd- over 100 years old.

So many- hard to sum up after 29 years..

Sportspark pool-I used to swim there when I first came here-Olympic size.

The Red buses- when you can get them-I always walk by choice and lately by necessity.

Calling Roosevelt Island my home is my favorite thing-such a special, unique part of this big home city of mine and that it honors FDR.

The Renwick Ruins- sorry, too many things- more than ten.

The special events for Everyone on the Island...

It used to be seeing the views at Southpoint Park. But I plan on replacing it by staring at the granite walls and screaming in my best Captain Kirk impersonation...Kaaaaahn!!!
