Roosevelt Island Day Nursery Hosting Makers Tent For June 11 Roosevelt Island Day - Seeking Donations Of Unwanted Materials To Upcycle And Repurpose

The Roosevelt Island Day Nursery (RIDN)

is hosting a June 11 "Makers" event

as part of Roosevelt Island Day and is asking for donations of unwanted materials to upcycle and re-purpose. According to RIDN Assistant Director Tamara Troadec:
"Maker" events are popping up across the US and many other countries. Maker events are part of a global trend that views children as highly competent and capable, and honors their imagination and natural ingenuity by offering a selection of exciting materials and the space to work with them, unhurried, whether alone or in collaboration with others.

RIDN is very excited to be sponsoring our own first annual "Maker Tent" at Good Shepherd Plaza, from 12-3, on Saturday, 6/11. Everyone who participates will receive a fun and unique "Maker" memento to take home. Low tables will be made available for smaller children, and drying racks for projects will also be on-hand.

Make/Explore/Invent/Play: What You Can Do at the Maker Tent.

At the Maker Tent, children and grownups will be able to create art or sculpture to take home, tinker with materials, or just play around. There will be traditional art materials (paper, markers, glue, scissors, etc), as well as lots and lots of junk and "loose parts" to inspire ideas and exploration.

Seeking Donations of Unwanted Materials to Upcycle & Repurpose

So far, RIDN has collected lots of great junk: buttons, yarn, old Christmas ornaments, eyeglasses, phone cases, fabric, and corks, to name a few. If you happen to have any junk/collections you wish to get rid of, please consider donating it for this community event.

Junk Sought:
  • fabric scraps/swatches,
  • carpet or tile,
  • little containers (with or without lids),
  • wood pieces,
  • picture frames,
  • paper,
  • envelopes,
  • clean plasticware,
  • ribbon, string, yarn,
  • natural materials (stones, pinecones, seashells, etc),
  • biodegradable packing peanuts,
  • screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, wire cutters (mini or small-sized versions),
  • costume jewelry,
  • old computer keyboards,
  • old electronics, cameras, clocks,
  • art materials (paint, glue, tape, canvas, brushes, markers, pencils),
  • random doodads (a bead, a key, a marker cap),
  • etc.

According to this Press Release from the Roosevelt Island Day Nursery:
Roosevelt Island Day Nursery Announces New Executive Director

The Board of Trustees of Roosevelt Island Day Nursery (RIDN), a progressive independent community preschool serving Roosevelt Island families since 1975, is pleased to announce the appointment of Pamela Stark, Ed.M., M.S., as the school’s Executive Director.

Ms. Stark’s comprehensive knowledge of early childhood education, her success in building RIDN’s infant toddler program, and her leadership as Interim Executive Director since May 2014 have been outstanding. The Board is confident that under her direction RIDN and its exceptional faculty will continue to serve the Roosevelt Island community with one of the very highest quality childcentered preschool programs in New York City.

Reem Berro, Chair of the Board of Trustees, notes, “I am thrilled that Pam accepted her new role as RIDN’s Executive Director. The board and I are confident that she is the best person for the job given her long history with the school and proven record of exceptional leadership.”

A thorough recruitment process was conducted by the Board’s hiring committee, which was composed of current and former RIDN parents, faculty, and alumni. Three of the committee members also have experience as preschool directors. This search process made it evident that Ms. Stark’s outstanding qualifications and experience uniquely position her to advance the mission and vision of the school, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

Pamela Stark received her B.A. from St. John’s College, her Ed.M. in Early Childhood Special Education from the Bank Street College of Education, and her M.S. from Columbia University’s School of Social Work. Ms. Stark served as a consultant to RIDN for fourteen years, leading trainings and workshops and advising parents and faculty on a wide range of early childhood developmental and educational issues. She joined the school in 2011 as the Director of RIDN’s new Infant Toddler program at 405 Main Street, building on her knowledge and expertise to shape and lead an outstanding childcentered program for RIDN’s very youngest learners.
