Condition Update On Man In Wheelchair Run Over By Access A Ride Van On Roosevelt Island's Main Street - Doing Better & Undergoing Rehab
Several readers have been asking about the status of the man in the wheelchair who was hit by an Access A Ride Van last week.
I went to the source and inquired of Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department Chief Keith Guerra:
I was wondering if you had an update on the condition of the man in wheelchair who got run over by the Access A Van last week? Any idea how he is doing? Was any determination made as to why this happened - speeding van or something that the wheelchair man did?
Also, several residents have expressed concern over speeding vehicles on Southpoint's Main Street. Any possibility of a speed bump being placed there?
Mr. Guerra replied:
The investigation revealed that the Vehicle did, in fact, stop at the stop sign, and looked to the right (sidewalk) before proceeding. The Wheelchair-bound pedestrian came across the front of the bus (from the left) and was subsequently pinned underneath.
According to the Nurse's Station at Cornell Medical Center, the patient is doing better and is being transferred today to a rehabilitation center to continue his recovery process.
As for the speeding on Southpoint's Main St., our unmarked unit has been conducting Radar there and several summonses were issued, but now fewer are being written because the condition is being corrected.
UPDATE - 8:35 AM - Correction, I meant Southtown's Main Street not Southpoint.
