Roosevelt Island Residents Association Meeting Tonight 8 PM At Good Shepherd Community Center

Image of June 2010 RIRA Meeting

The Roosevelt Island Residents Association will be holding its September Monthly meeting tonight at the Good Shepherd Community Center Lower Level Room (8 PM). As always, prior to the start of each meeting there is a public session in which any resident can come and address the Common Council Delegates on any issue of concern.

Below is the Draft Agenda for tonight's meeting, the Draft Minutes for the previous meeting last June, reports from the Government Relations Committe, Island Services Committee and material on the Maple Tree Group's recommendation regarding the RIOC Board Nominee election timetable.

If you are concerned about issues impacting Roosevelt Island - this is the place to be tonight.

I can't figure out why Frank Farance didn't make it in the last Senate or Gov vettting process. Maybe he should explain soon before people realize he lies about everything.

I haven't lied about anything. I've consistently told the truth. I'll have a full response to the recent letters, which don't tell the truth or give misleading or incomplete perspective (yes, Matt, Ashton, Vicky, and Linda are in error).

Just to give you an example, on July 7 Ashton Barfield confirms in writing that I am a member of MTG, yet if you look at the Government Relations Committee report written two months later, you won't see my name listed (Ashton confirmed that there are 12 members of MTG on July 7, yet only 8 are listed on Asthon's GRC report). MTG is being operated contrary to RIRA by-laws (there are no by-laws that permit the exclusion of RIRA members in meetings, like you and me; and there are no by-laws that permit the exclusion of members in voting in a committee). One thing that was really clear to the residents at last night's RIRA meeting is that there was a closed group mentality in the MTG -- this has been the perception of a good number of Island residents for the past 13 years. At last night's RIRA meeting, Ashton announced that *now* MTG is open to everyone. For some residents who wanted to participate but were excluded, a 13-year struggle has been resolved.

Finally, regarding not being selected, both Erin Feely-Nahem and I did not get appointed. We were never told why, and others (including our elected officials) asked why but never got an answer. We suspect that because both Erin and I had expressed negative comments about RIOC (Erin had expressed strong concerns about how Public Safety were interacting with youth) that made us undesirable, but we still don't know why. The same concerns would likely apply to prior RIRA Presidents Matt Katz and Steve Marcus. I don't know if the criteria changes over time ... it's a really opaque process that none of us understand.

Regarding the vetting process, I would easily pass given my government clearance and my well-vetted background in my expert witness work.

I don't think it is very helpful calling people liars, particularly when it comes from anonymous commenters.

If you have a point to make, even if it is critical one, please do so without the name calling. The name calling is not only inappropriate, but weakens any point the name caller is trying to make.

The anonymous name calling is causing me to consider shutting off anonymous comments and requiring some sort of identity registration to comment.

I agree. This is an unfortunate result of Frank Farance publicly stating horrible conspiracy theories under the guise of being the public watchdog. I'm sure he will recreate reality again in his next column.

It's too bad Roosevelt Islander feels that it is necessary to filter the exchange of ideas, merely over the issue of a posting about truth and lies. If Island Leaders can't handle the heat of public conversation, they should get out of the kitchen!

Let residents express their opinions freely. The island needs to enhance the exchange of ideas, not more censorship. Threats like this by Roosevelt Islander do more harm than good. People need to have tolerance for other opions.
