Roosevelt Island Waterfront Promenade Entrance Spoiled By Southtown Restaurants Garbage Dumpster - At Least Feeding Pigeons and Rats Have A Nice View For Their Litter Soup

Image of Garbage Waste Shed At Entrance to Roosevelt Island Waterfront Promenade

One of the absolute best things about Roosevelt Island is walking along our waterfront promenade enjoying beautiful views of the New York City Skyline and the passing boats on the East River. It is an incredibly relaxing and pleasant experience. That is unless you are at the top of the ramp leading to the promenade across from the Subway Station and are hit by the sight and smell of the garbage waste dumpster shed containing the garbage from Southtown restaurants.

Now, I am very happy to have these restaurants in Southtown, would not want it otherwise, but is there a more suitable location to place their garbage dumpster?

A Roosevelt Island resident wrote yesterday:
Island residents have been complaining regarding the amount of litter and vermin that is visible and present on the promenade near Starbucks. Strollers, joggers and walkers must pass through this litter'soup' to get to the promenade. It will probably be addressed at the next RIRA meeting and has already been brought to the attention of Related management and the Boards. We are hoping for a solution that will move the bin off the entrance of the Roosevelt Island promenade-which is one of the greatest assets of our island. It would be like having a gross dumpster like this on the highline.
People who care don't want this kind of thing.
and shares these pictures.

Mmmmm - bet the pigeons and rats loved that chicken bone and other goodies from our restaurants.

UPDATE 6 PM - Andrew Jackson is the owner representative for Southtown's Hudson/Related, the landlord for the Riverwalk restaurants and new Main Street Retail Master Leaseholder. Mr. Jackson addresses the dumpster issue:
thanks for posting this. I wasn’t aware the garbage area was a mess but we will get it cleaned asap. In the future, you can always bring Riverwalk stuff to my attention.
I replied:
Thanks for the prompt action.

I think the issue is also the location of the dumpster. Can it be removed somewhere else in a less conspicuous location?
Mr Jackson asked?
I am not aware of a less conspicuous location that is within a comparable distance to the retail stores but is not under someone’s residential window. Do you have any suggestions?

Same is true of the dumpsters behind M & D Deli next to the entrance to the 575 Island House entrance across from the RIOC office.

I am sorry but what? Yes, you walk BY it. How do you manage it to actually walk THROUGH it?

The poor condition of the enclosure for the Trellis dumpsters also needs to be addressed.

RIOC and RIRA should write about these types of things on this island. There should be a hygene squad depolyed to all the businesses here on RI> it is so easy to come down on the new guys on the island, southtown this, southtown that, southtown yadda, yadda, yadda, have you been in the bathrooms in the dugeon at the trellis?  I was shocked that the employees wash their hands there? the floors inside the Chinese place? the floors inside all of the businesses on this island. The whole Island infastructures need overhauling and a good steam cleaning. Again, Matt Katz and Ms. Tores should approache these issues instead of talking about how blue the skies are, the movies here on the island and guitar playing and being on safari...real issues at hand should be addressed in that thing called the WiRE...by the way, The Wire in the world of finance means, " relaying information " I do not read the Wire for information, only for amusement and laughter.

It's like Roosevelt Island's own Yellow Brick Road begins with smelly dumpster juice and a trail of dumpster giblets.

Yes, it is disgusting and they need to do something about it.  Before you fire off that complaint letter, think about *where* those
dumpsters might go.  They really need to go somewhere (ditto for M&D
and Trellis) and that is usually near the merchant, unless you want a
long trail of dumpster giblets tracking back to the far away dumping zone.

Some of us have puzzled over the problem.  It's not just becoming an
expert at putting trash into the dumpster because the liquid garbage
in those dumpsters leak juice and giblets. (Have I said that enough times
to get you to conjure that disgusting visual?)

One
more thing: the restaurants won't store large quantities of garbage inside
because it is unsanitary and they might lose their "A" ratings.

In summary, this is a problem to puzzle over and the solution is likely
to be different for Starbucks, Trellis, and M&D Deli.

You can contact Aaron Hamburger, RIRA Island Service Committee (ISC) Chair, via E-mail at ashamburger33 -AT- gmail -DOT- com.  The RIRA ISC addresses these kinds of problems and Mr. Hamburger's team follows up.  Send him your ideas.

RIOC has their See-Click-Fix application at "http://rioc.com/RI311.htm".  Last time I checked there were a good number of unresolved complaints.  Maybe it works better now, I don't know.

You can also contact Fernando Martinez, RIOC VP of Operations at FMartinez -AT- rioc -DOT- com.

The restaurant's landlord, Hudson Related, reports that they will clean up the dumpster on the Waterfront Promenade and ask for alternative location suggestions

How about placing the dumpster across the street in the almost-vacant parking lot where the Zip Cars are located? This area gets very little pedestrian traffic.

maybe to keep up Leslie Tores and her " green initiative " they should start a compose pile somewhere, recycle more and try to cut down their carbon footprint ??

I appreciate Mr Jackson's request for an alternate location.  I think the only other viable location is the loading zone area on the south side of the subway ventilating station.  Vincent suggested the zip car area, but this would be a temporary location until the new buildings are constructed.  Wherever it goes, it should be redesigned, aesthetically pleasing (as much as a trash location can be), and properly maintained.  A compactor unit would be ideal, a little more expensive, but an absolutely perfect solution for a community like Roosevelt Island.

Frank Farance said...

Just a comment on a compactor unit: they use bigger dumpsters, typically they are hauled away on flatbeds, e.g., AVAC and hospitals.  Although they keep the "juice" and "giblets" in the dumpster (GOOD), they require a flatbed to haul them away, thus they are restricted to areas where one can back a flatbed into (LESS GOOD).  Read: Fewer viable places for compactors than for dumpster sheds.

I'm not complaining about your suggestion, just pointing out some secondary ideas to think about.

455Resident said...

Actually Frank, they make compactors that trash haulers can tip and dump the same way they do non-compacting containers.  Compacting waste reduces hauling costs by up to 50%. Compacting reduces the bulk load by a ratio of 4 or 5 to 1 ( I'm starting to sound like I'm in the business).  Anyway you get the idea. We need to get this disgusting eye soar away from the promenade.  I watched last night as the garbage truck pulled completely onto the pavers, which is totally unnecessary.  Who is in charge of policing these guys anyway?  Hudson/related?

Frank Farance said...

I agree with your points.  Thanks for the dumpster expertise: who knew about tip-n-dump compactor haulers?

Ultimately, RIOC and the City are responsible (because the City licenses garbage and its movement).  I can't think of a prior garbage dumping incident that needed to be triaged between City and State, so this my be new ground from a regulatory (and 311) perspective.

Finally, if you haven't perceived it already, I find every comment to be a hoot: a very serious discussion on dumpster juice and giblets.  (OK, we really have to solve the problem, but the talk is howlingly funny.)

Question - why can't they simply use/hook into the vacuum system like the residential buildings? I mean, if you have the most hi-tech trash system in the country, why not use it - at least all the dumpsters would simply go away :)
