Crazy Male Jogger Reportedly Assaulting Bike Riders On Roosevelt Island Bridge Walkway - Take A Bike Ride From Upper East Side To Roosevelt Island's Lighthouse Park And Upcoming Bike New York Roosevelt Island Events

Take a cool bicycle ride from the Upper East Side to Roosevelt Island via the FDR Promenade to the Queensboro Bridge, thru Long Island City, over the Roosevelt Island Bridge and then to Lighthouse Park.

But watch out for this.

According to a NYC District 5 See Click Fix report:

There's a crazy male jogger not staying on the right side, but purposely running on the left side of the RI Bridge (when ever he see's a biker), grabbing bikers and assaulting them if they don't stay off the walkway with their bikes. Whether their riding or walking with their bikes. This person looks (white, '5''10, 200 lbs.), and he does this around 8 or 9 in the morning. I have to get me a "gopro" camera to catch this person in action.

This report is unconfirmed. The Roosevelt Island Public Safety Department is not aware of any such incidents.

Also, Bike New York's Roosevelt Island Community Outreach Manager Caitlin Goodspeed spoke during the October 1 Roosevelt Island Residents Association (RIRA) Public Session about upcoming Bike NY Roosevelt Island events including:
... a ride to the beautiful Astoria Park this Saturday at 11:30am! We'll have a picnic in the park (dessert provided by Bike New York) before making the 2.3 mile ride back to Roosevelt Island. It's our last Saturday ride in the Summer Ride Series so you won't want to miss out! Email me at cgoodspeed@bikenewyork.org to register for this free ride...
and:
... We're still looking for volunteers to help us count commuters on Roosevelt Island this Monday (Oct. 6) from 6am - 10am! If you're free that morning and would like to help, please send me a message or email me asap at cgoodspeed@bikenewyork.org. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt, breakfast, and a big hug!
Here's what Ms. Goodspeed said

during the October 1 RIRA Public Session.

Roosevelt Island Runners Group Being Formed - Meet Saturday Morning 9:30 AM For First Group Run

A new Roosevelt Island group is being formed - The Roosevelt Island Runners. Here's some info:
A new group – The Roosevelt Island Runners – has been created on the island after a few residents inquired about a group running event.  The group will start by running once a week starting in front of Riverwalk Bar and Grill at 9:30 am on Saturday mornings.  There is no set distance or pace, just a bunch of people, starting a run (or even walk) together.   If there is enough interest other runs may be organized.  The link below is the website for the group.  There are a few polls and room for new ideas and suggestions.  See you Saturday morning.

http://www.facebook.com/RooseveltIslandRunners
So if you want to avoid the loneliness of a long or short distance runner, come on out Saturday mornings and enjoy the company of your fellow Roosevelt Island runners as these runners did last October for the Icla da Silva 5k run.

This article from the September 8, 2001 Main Street WIRE reports on the Icla da Silva Foundation's origins on Roosevelt Island:
... More than 100 people signed up.  Some were turned away due to health factors and some never showed up.  But 65 eventually donated a pint of blood each on Roosevelt Island Day, June 9.  "The blood drive was a great success.  We collected more than double the average of 30 pints at similar events," said Alci da Silva, the Executive Director of the Icla da Silva Foundation, based on Roosevelt Island.  The foundation was set up in memory of da Silva's daughter, Icla, who died of leukemia a decade ago...
Additional information on the Foundation available at its web site.
The Icla da Silva Foundation is the largest recruitment center for the Be The Match Registry in the United States. It recruits over 38,000 new potential bone marrow donors every year, with a strong focus on minority communities.

The Icla da Silva Foundation was established in 1992, in memory of the 13-year-old brazilian girl named Icla da Silva. After three years of fighting leukemia, Icla passed away in New York City, where she came hoping to get her life saving treatment: a bone marrow transplant. The young girl never found a matching donor....

Roving Runner Runs Roosevelt Island - And Likes It Very Much

Roosevelt Island Running Route Image From USATF

A very nice story in the NY Times Well Blog by The Roving Runner describing his first visit to and run around Roosevelt Island.
Roosevelt Island is sitting right there. A thin, two-mile-long slice of residential life sandwiched between Manhattan and Queens, I had seen it and heard about it, but somehow after 13 years of living in the city, I’d never been there.

What better way to see a tiny island than by running around it?...

... as I completed my lap around the island I saw an oil tanker just to my right floating along slightly faster than I was running. I sped up to stay even with the tanker and kept pace for about a minute, smiling my way through this “race.” The vessel gradually pulled away and I slowed back down, enjoying some more views of Manhattan and grateful that I had made this trip.
More information on running or jogging around Roosevelt Island is available at these earlier posts.

Running and Jogging On Roosevelt Island - One of The Best Waterfront Routes In New York City

Roosevelt Island Running Route Image From USATF

Blogger Runemployed has an excellent post on running the approximately 4 mile loop around Roosevelt Island. An excerpt:
Roosevelt Island is that two mile long sliver of land, only 800 feet at its widest, that many of us have seen only while riding in a cab down the FDR Drive in Manhattan or while crossing the Queensboro Bridge. But with flat, paved paths running nearly the entire perimeter of the island, cool breezes off the river and almost no traffic, Roosevelt Island is a fantastic place to explore as a runner....
And:
... Finding good waterfront running in New York is a great way to escape the insanity of the city – and Roosevelt Island offers some of the best running on the East River with unbeatable views of Midtown East. Once you’ve completed the run, check out this film by Thomas Edison from 1903 and see if you can spot some of the buildings you just ran by. There are more landmarks and other interesting things to see in the interior of the island along Main Street, so if you have the time, stick around to explore. Visit the Roosevelt Island Historical Society for more information.

Jogging on Roosevelt Island

Ever wondered what it was like to run or jog around Roosevelt Island? Blogging triathlete Swim, Bike Run Race describes his January run from Astoria to and around Roosevelt Island.

...the short bridge connecting Queens and Roosevelt Island is currently facing renovations, so I trek across under a canopy of plastic as seen to the left. At this point, I'm feeling quite good; the crisp sub-20 degree air is more refreshing than chilling.
Heading south along the East side of the island, I cross under the Queensboro Bridge and turn back for a rather beautiful shot of one of the city's major borough connectors. In more temperate weather, I hit the Queensboro Bridge to embark on my long bike rides in Central Park.

At the South end of the island, I head toward the West side of the island with a great view of some of Manhattan's East side landmarks, including the U.N. building. Roosevelt Island's South end is currently a wasteland of overgrown weeds and razor
wire. However, there are plans for a Spring 2008 park opening so that is definitely something to look forward to.

You Tube 360 Roosevelt Island Southpoint Park View from StrahlemannBE

I hit the four-mile marker and turn right up the West side of Roosevelt Island. I hop off the pavement and run on the grass for a while with bare trees hanging overhead on both sides. Despite the rather unattractive hospital facility to my right, the tree branches connect overhead to form a picturesque canopy - in New York, we take beauty where we can get it!

Video of Coler-Goldwater Hospital from Roosevelt Island 360

At mile five, it's time to refuel. I'm feeling great, keeping up a quick pace and getting a kick out of the side mission of photographing my run. Fuel of choice today is strawberry banana-flavored Powerbar Gel, a personal favorite.

The West side of Roosevelt Island offers both a nice view of Manhattan as well as a few comical artistic displays, as shown to the right. There are a handful of these statues emerging from the river. They're funny and it's always nice to check out some art when you're cruising along on a run.

Marriage of Real Estate and Money Image from Tom Otterness

The North point is one of the main reasons I love coming to Roosevelt Island despite the eery zombie-movie architecture, constant construction and general lack of human life. When you get to the point where you can't move any further North, you hit this fascinating little lighthouse and a great spot to get a real 360-degree perspective of New York City: Manhattan to the left, Queens to the right and the TriBoro Bridge looming in the distance. Of course, there's water all around and for me, that's a huge positive.

You Tube 360 Roosevelt Island Lighthouse View from StrahlemannBE

Heading back down the East side of the island toward the sun provides yet another fleeting glimpse of beauty. I'm in the home stretch now, hitting mile six as I cross over the footbridge and back into Queens.
If you are coming from Manhattan, take the Roosevelt Island Tram from 59th Street and 2nd Avenue over to Roosevelt Island and head either South to Southpoint Park or North to Lighthouse Park. The F train also stops here. For those wanting to run all the way to Roosevelt Island from Manhattan, take the pathway on the 59th Street ( Queensboro) Bridge over Roosevelt Island to Queens. Make your way back towards the East River and then take Vernon B'lvd through Long Island City to 36th avenue and go over the Roosevelt Island Bridge. Now you're on Roosevel Island!
Maybe you will even find some human life over here.
